.AVIATION...

Higher intensity snow showers early this morning have been tied the
convergence along the main arctic cold front which will be advancing
across metro Detroit around 12Z. Post frontal lake strato cu will
persist through the rest of the morning and into the early
afternoon. The growing depth of the mixed layer will keep bases
generally above 4000 ft. The degree of dry air advection today is
expected to allow ample breaks in the clouds, possibly allowing
ceiling coverage to go scattered mid to late afternoon. There has
actually been some variability in the frequency of stronger wind
gusts early this morning. The growing mixed layer depth should
support an uptick in the winds shortly after daybreak, with a
weakening gradient allowing the winds to steadily decrease during
the course of the afternoon.

For DTW...The risk of additional snow showers will decrease
significantly after 12Z. The mean wind directions are expected to
hold around 310 to 320 degrees today. Peak wind gusts are actually
to occur with the pre dawn snow shower activity, with winds
decreasing after 15Z.

DTW THRESHOLD PROBABILITIES...

* Moderate in ceilings at or below 5000 feet this morning and
  afternoon.

* Low in crosswind thresholds being exceeded this morning.

DISCUSSION...

The lead edge of the incoming airmass was accompanied by intense
snow squalls and isolated thunderstorms over Southeast Michigan and
the Ontario Peninsula last night and early this morning. These were
supported by outstanding convective depths made possible by the
steep lapse rates up to 15kft noted on the 00z DTX sounding which
eventually saturated within and above the DGZ to the tune of 110 to
115% RH wrt ice per recent mesoanalysis. Mid-level moisture quality
within the DGZ will actually remain very favorable through this
morning with the difference being that the incoming dry slot is
steadily suppressing convective depths. Secondary cold over central
Lower Michigan entering the northern CWA at press time will support
much shallower convection through mid morning. Radar appearance is
currently unimpressive, though potential exists for additional
entrainment of Lake Michigan moisture and some overachieving on a
localized basis, mainly along the front itself, in the 09-12z window
before it exits to the southeast.

Attention for the remainder of the forecast period turns to the
stretch of active weather beginning Thursday night and lasting into
sometime Sunday. Synoptically, the nature of the event is
essentially established in the modeling now that the ECMWF has come
in 10mb weaker at the surface and is much more similar to the
remaining global NWP. The airmass that was displaced by last night's
cold front will lift back into the area late Thursday, convergence
along its lead edge potentially supporting a few high based showers
Thursday afternoon. More likely is that rain will hold off until the
low level jet folds across the area Thursday night and PWATs rise
toward 1 inch by Friday morning within the developing regime of deep
southwesterly moist isentropic ascent. The lack of larger scale
support during this time will favor lighter/disorganized showers
Thursday night into Friday morning for most of the area, the
exception being near the Ohio border where greater organization
along the veering nocturnal LLJ will remain possible.

Very impressive right entrance dynamics develop Friday through early
Saturday supporting rapid development of the baroclinic zone up to
the tropopause. Cross-sections likewise indicate an abundance of
potential instability along the full depth of the frontal slope
which elevates concern that the coarse resolution guidance available
at this time frame may be developing precipitation too high up the
frontal slope. While further refinements can be expected during the
next several model cycles, it is apparent that the necessary
ingredients will be in place for a band of heavy rain to become
established over a swath of Lower Michigan Friday into Saturday.

Uncertainty wrt to precipitation placement then becomes
key as ongoing cold advection within NNE flow will force a north-to-
south transition from rain to mixed precipitation to snow. Setup
readily lends itself to a defined band of sleet/fzra as cold air
undercuts the stationary frontal zone from the north, though it is
worth noting that the post processed ptype output in the 00z
guidance is extremely tenuous north of I-69. Bufkit soundings in the
Saginaw Valley, for example, exhibit a very marginal warm nose that
supports snow pellets at best and all-snow at worst when considering
potential for strong ascent. Primary wave then lifts through the
Lower Great Lakes Saturday night into Sunday. The dry slot will
surge northeast directly beneath it while deformation snowfall
develops to the north.

MARINE...

Passage of a clipper system through Quebec has allowed an arctic
front to travel across the Great Lakes region, responsible for
elevated wind speeds/gusts and wave heights. Post-frontal northwest
flow will continue to allow 25-30 knot wind gusts to persist across
the open waters and nearshore zones through Wednesday morning.
Strongest gusts to near-gales/brief gales remain possible across
central and southern Lake Huron through the late morning, tied to
stronger winds aloft. Small craft advisories have been exteneded
across the outer Saginaw By south to the nearshore zones in Port
Huron as sustained northwest flow will allow elevated wave heights
to persist well into the day on Wednesday. Otherwise, snow squall
potential remains high across mainly Lake Huron into the Saginaw Bay
through Wednesday morning, before instability decreases by the
afternoon. Brief but quick reductions to visibility are to be
expected under any squall activity. Otherwise, wind speeds expected
to diminish through the afternoon and evening, with freezing spray
potential holding on through the day as a cool air mass resides over
the Great Lakes.

A strong warm front is then forecasted to push north into the Great
Lakes Thursday morning and afternoon, which will bring the next
chance for strong winds across the lakes. Much higher confidence
regarding gusts between 35-40 knots across Lake Huron Thursday
given the impressive low-level wind field that moves in. A gale
watch remains in effect for Lake Huron.

HYDROLOGY...

There will be an influx of warm air into the Great Lakes Thursday
into Friday. Along with this warm air will be an usually high amount
of moisture for January. A slow moving frontal boundary is forecast
to settle across southeast Michigan. There is also the potential for
a couple of low pressure systems to lift from the deep south and
into the eastern Great Lakes along this front. The result will the
potential for multiple rounds of rain across Southeast Michigan.
Rain chances will increase Thursday night and will remain quite high
through most of the days Friday and Saturday. There is a high
potential that total rainfall during these two days will exceed one
inch. There is actually a chance that some locals may approach three
inch rainfall amounts. These higher rainfall amounts carry higher
chances from metro Detroit, Ann Arbor and points south.

Frozen ground will mean that there will be a lot of runoff into area
rivers. If two day rainfall totals exceed 2 inches, the chances for
flooding along area rivers and streams will be increased. Low lying
flood prone and urban areas will also be at risk for flooding.
