Area Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...

The last day in our stretch of mild early April temperatures unfolds
this afternoon leading up to another round of showers tonight.
Afternoon satellite imagery shows the larger scale upper level low
over central Canada which will drive unsettled conditions across
Lower Michigan tonight through Thursday. The initial surge of height
falls and short wave energy on the downstream flank of the system
brings the next round of showers to the region tonight. Radar
composite and model analysis fields show elevated moisture transport
already driving a pattern of showers over MN/IA/WI this afternoon
and this expands eastward into Lower Michigan tonight. Short wave
DCVA leads to deepening of the surface low just south of the Ohio
border so that short wave forcing combines with increased mid level
theta-e advection to support expansion of the showers and the
categorical POPs already in the forecast for SE Michigan. There is
also just enough evidence for a thunderstorm mention tonight based
on upstream observations this morning. Nocturnal enhancement of
elevated instability is expected to be even more efficient tonight
as the wave deepens and mid level wind field strengthens over the
central Great Lakes.

The moisture axis moves steadily eastward and carries the rain
pattern out of the area after midnight. This leaves a break in
activity in the effective post frontal environment leading up to
sunrise. Notable conditions by then include a few higher wind gusts
around 30 mph possible with the NW wind shift and the initial surge
of low level cold advection, however this does more to set the stage
for the daytime hours Thursday. The post front NW flow strengthens
and deepens during the morning as boundary layer growth gains
traction with daytime warming. The pace of mixing shown in model
soundings supports gusts in the 30 mph range by late morning.

Daytime warming and related boundary layer growth also initiates
some convective potential that materializes as the upper level cold
core builds into the region. The upper level trough brings
temperatures down to about -34C which is at the moving average for
record lows in the DTX upper air climatology centered on April 9th.
The convective layer is limited to below 600 mb in model soundings
but includes lapse rate averaging 7.5 C/km from 850 mb as early
April daytime warming ramps up after 15Z. Forecast soundings also
indicate EQL near -20C which suggests a rumble of thunder is
possible along with pea size hail in stronger updrafts as the
freezing level drops to only around 1500 ft. A higher probability
outcome is scattered to numerous coverage of showers, especially
across the Thumb region where the cold core aloft overlaps more in
time with the diurnal peak. The likelihood for moderate convection
also raises the possibility for higher end wind gusts which could
reach 40 mph both within and outside of heavier showers through the
afternoon. The coverage and intensity of showers, along with
strength of wind gusts, then all diminish with the loss of diurnal
forcing Thursday evening.

Some improvement develops Friday in the form of dry weather,
although gusty NW wind makes colder temperatures feel that much more
below normal. Highs temperatures are limited to the lower and mid
40s compared to lower to mid 50s more typical for the second weekend
of April. Temperature moderation is then countered by an increasing
chance of rain during the weekend. South wind develops Saturday
between Atlantic coast high pressure and the next frontal system in
the Plains. The primary low is shown to tap Gulf moisture and move
toward the Great Lakes Sunday into Monday.

High pressure quickly moving east today will make way for rain
showers later this evening ahead of a cold front, which is being
driving through the region by a low pressure system moving across
northern Ontario. Cold front will move through the Central Great
Lakes tonight and usher in cold air into the region while the
pressure gradient tightens bringing unsettled marine conditions
tomorrow into Friday. Northwest gales will be likely across central
and northern Lake Huron by early afternoon tomorrow. A Gale Warning
is now in effect for these areas. Southern Lake Huron also has
potential for northwest gales by late afternoon. A Gale Watch
remains in effect for these areas with some details still to hash
out before a warning decision is made for the southern Lake Huron
zones. These winds will also produce hazardous small craft
conditions for all the nearshore zones. Harsh marine conditions

AVIATION...

VFR conditions and light northwest to west winds prevail this
afternoon into the early evening as weak high pressure passes
through the region. Higher moisture content and cloud cover fill
back in during the evening as a cold front moves in from the west.
Ceilings lower below 5kft tonight with a chance for several hours of
MVFR, as well as a period of light to moderate showers with frontal
passage. Limited instability will keep thunder chances low enough to
preclude a mention in the TAFs at this time. Cool northwest post-
frontal flow takes over on Thursday with wind speeds increasing to
about 20 kt by the late morning - gusts approaching 30 kt for a
brief period in the afternoon. Typical cold-advection stratocumulus
is expected with any broken ceilings expected to occur generally in
the 3kft to 6kft range.

For DTW...A shift from light NW/W wind to S around 00z as an
inverted surface trough passes overhead, then back to NW around 05z
as the cold front moves through. Clear skies across the lowest 5000
ft expected through the early evening. Rain is expected to begin
after 03z with ceilings falling to MVFR shortly after.

There is a low chance of thunderstorms tonight, mainly for a few
hours around midnight. No severe weather is expected as the
strongest storms only produce lightning and heavy downpours while
moving west to east at 30 mph.

Gusty northwest winds develop Thursday behind a strong cold front.
Wind gusts could reach 40 mph at times during the afternoon.

Scattered to numerous rain showers are also expected Thursday. This
activity combined with colder temperatures could result in some pea
size hail in heavier showers during the afternoon.
