Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Des Moines IA 324 AM CST Mon Dec 28 2020 .DISCUSSION.../Today through Sunday/ Issued at 323 AM CST Mon Dec 28 2020 The main weather concern is the large winter storm impacting much of the area beginning Tuesday morning and lasting through early Wednesday morning. Details to follow, but first a word on today's weather and the synoptic setup. Today: Low stratus remained in place across much of the state overnight, gradually shifting south in the early morning hours with the departing shortwave trough. Northwest flow on the back side of the trough has kept weak cold air advection into the area overnight. Meanwhile a surface high across South Dakota and Nebraska will slowly shift east into the area, with subsidence helping to diminish cloud cover throughout the day. Tuesday/Wednesday: At the same time a longwave trough will swing across the western US, increasing moisture transport as it goes, and phasing with the shortwave across the northern plains. Models have come into good agreement on the main features of the storm. While earlier runs of the GFS were further north than the Euro, the latest runs have pulled the storm's track and subsequent axis of heaviest precipitation into closer agreement. Storm evolution will begin with warm air advection into the area within the warm sector. Although latest runs of the GFS have trend colder, both model's soundings show a decent warm nose with this which will result in a period of mixed precipitation across southern and into central Iowa. Into northern Iowa precipitation will largely remain snow with little mixing within the deformation zone of the cyclone and sufficient saturation through the depth of the layer. Any differences in mixed precipitation will cause big changes in the snow accumulations. A sharp gradient in snow accumulations is anticipated on the south side of this system. Ice accumulations across southern and into central Iowa are around 0.10" for now, though again any changes in dry slot placement or warm layer depth with play a big role in accumulations. As the system departs overnight Wednesday loss of ice introduction aloft will allow for a transition over to freezing rain, however at this point moisture will be decreasing and additional accumulations should be very minor. The swath of heaviest snow accumulations will occur with strong frontogenesis from southwest to northeast Iowa. Accumulations of 5-8 inches will be common within this heavier swath. It should be noted that while recent runs of the GFS/Euro and their ensembles have come into agreement with this swath over southwest to east central Iowa, the latest runs of the HRRR paint a different picture. 00z and 06z 48 hour HRRR runs now include the entire event, though the swath here is much wider with an axis of much higher accumulations - in the double digits for many. This will be worth monitoring for trends, especially as it gets into the range of additional CAMS guidance which could result in an upward trend in snow accumulations and perhaps a shift in this axis. A winter storm warning has been issued for much of the area where 5-8+" will be possible. By the end of the week a cut-off upper level low may deal a glancing blow to the area as we ring in the new year, however model solutions diverge and there is low confidence in the track of this system. While the GFS only skirts the area the Euro pulls the deformation zone across much of the area.
