Though the Wind Chill Advisory will expire at 9 am, wind chills will likely remain near to below criteria through noon this morning. Am becoming increasingly concerned with hazardous impact potential for late Friday/early Saturday as potent cold air gradient + strong winds punches southeastward across Iowa. The impacts could be like that of a snow- squall warning... Temperatures may fall around 20 degrees in less than 3 hours, accompanied by the leading surge of 40 kt wind gusts. This may ultimately lead to rapid freezing on surfaces... especially untreated surfaces... and potentially very hazardous travel through Saturday morning. If snow were to concurrently fall, this would reduce visibility on top of the above impacts. Also, wanted to increase mention of potential issues to power lines and tree branches... If this were a "stand-alone" event with just one-tenth of an inch, the concurrent strong winds would notably amplify impacts. With snow ahead of this system, central to southern Iowa may have higher-impact potential if the snow falls as more wet/heavy snow. Increasing confidence in high winds for Saturday. Cannot completely rule out High Wind Warning criteria being neared across northern Iowa. The strong northwesterly winds alone would create hazardous travel conditions... but adding in the potential for icing/blowing snow may amplify hazardous travel through Saturday afternoon and evening. Will monitor this closely over the next few forecast updates. && .DISCUSSION.../Today through Wednesday/ Issued at 441 AM CST Thu Jan 16 2020 ...Multiple Hazards Possible Over the Next Few Days... Key Points: 1.) Multiple precipitation types likely across our area Friday through Saturday morning... 2.) Strong, hazard-level winds at times will play a major role in contributing to worsening impacts... 3.) Potentially hazard-level wind chills are forecast for Sunday and Monday mornings... Discussion: 1.) Multiple precipitation types likely... What: Snow/Blowing Snow --> Freezing Rain/Ice --> Blowing Snow Where: Our entire forecast area When: Snow should arrive in SW Iowa shortly by around 4 to 6 am, spreading northeastward through the morning hours... likely arriving near the Des Moines metro between 6 to 8 am... and the Waterloo area between 8 to 10 am. Snow will likely last most of Friday morning and early afternoon. Then snow will transition to freezing rain/ice in SW Iowa by mid afternoon, the Des Moines metro area near the evening commute, and then the Waterloo area later in the evening. The periods of freezing rain/ice should last until around sunrise, when it will transition to light snow and blowing snow. New snow accumulations should be around 1 inch or less on Saturday. On a side note, would recommend shoveling before bedtime Friday evening... with freezing rain/icing appearing plausible overnight, this would make any fallen snow more difficult to remove. 2.) Strong winds will play a major role in worsening impacts... What/Where: Very high confidence in strong winds Friday, followed by even stronger winds on Saturday. Winds on Friday roughly along and north of Highway 20 should be SE @ 20 to 30 mph, with gusts nearing 45 mph. Winds south of Highway 20 will be around 15 to 25 mph, with gusts nearing 35 mph. On Saturday, winds across much of our area will likely be in the 25 to 35 mph range, with gusts over 45 mph. The strongest winds will be in northern Iowa. Impacts: During periods of snow Friday afternoon, the strong winds may reduce visibility to less than 1/4 to 1/2 mile at times in northern Iowa... and less than 1/2 mile at times in central to southern Iowa. Further, the strong winds will likely lead to blowing and drifting of snow back onto roadways... especially in northern Iowa during Friday. For Saturday, the strong winds will lead to travel difficulties... especially for high-profile vehicles, and especially for those traveling on N-S routes such as Interstate 35. Further, the strong winds and cold air surging southward may lead to "wheel- track glazing/black ice" conditions, where the accumulated snow/ice may re- freeze/freeze on surfaces (especially untreated ones), potentially leading to icy surfaces and roadways. 3.) Very cold air may lead to hazard-level wind chill values Sunday and Monday mornings... Confidence is very high in cold air surging across Iowa Saturday through Monday. In fact, temperatures will likely begin to fall after sunrise Saturday morning, bottoming out Sunday morning near 0 to minus 5 or so degrees across much of Iowa. Factoring in the wind speeds, wind chill values of -20 degrees may make it as far south as Interstate 80, with far northern Iowa potentially nearing wind chill values of near -30 degrees. For Monday morning, winds should be closer to 10 mph or so, but actual air temperatures will likely be in the -5 to -10 degree range... producing wind chill values of -15 to -25 degrees across most of Iowa. Frostbite to exposed skin can occur within 30 minutes with wind chills in this range. Temperatures on Tuesday morning will likely be near to slightly below zero once again, with wind chill values in the -10 to -15 degree range. In short, temperatures for much of Iowa may not be above freezing from Saturday morning until the end of next week. Scientific discussion... Friday's snow ratios with this event will absolutely be worth watching. With notably different temperatures profiles from southern to northern Iowa, snow ratios along and south of I-80 may be closer to the 5-7:1 range, whereas snow in northern Iowa may be closer to the 12-15:1 range. Should this play out, the impacts would be notably different... especially given the strong winds in northern Iowa. Prior to the transition to freezing precip, northern Iowa may contend with notably more blowing snow than central/southern Iowa. Looking at forecast soundings, there appears to be strong saturation in the -2C to -5C range... which would support crystal habits of dendrites. In central Iowa, this would be big, wet flakes. In northern Iowa, the potential large flakes would amplify vsby reductions. Surface temperatures will be interesting... with fresh snow, have nudged down temperatures... keeping wind chill values lowered. For winds have not seen this favorable of a strong wind setup as is shaping for Saturday in quite some time. Sfc pressure gradient of 3mb/50km met with a huge swath of +10 mb/3hr pressure rises behind this system that covers much of northern through central Iowa. With strong CAA, it should not be difficult to transport mixed layer winds of 40 to 50 kts to the sfc. If not for potential wintry impacts, would likely have a wind advisory out. Will see how the winter weather plays out... but for now, am thinking handling with a Winter Weather Advisory is the correct path to take... given the icing potential. The long-term generally looks quiet. Sunday night into Monday morning, the 00z operational GFS is trying to kick a very compact, fast-moving shortwave from NW to SE across Iowa. At this point, the GFS is an outlier in this solution, so do not have precip mentioned during this timeframe... but certainly bears watching as Monday could be a travel day for many. There may be another winter system for next weekend to contend with... also bears watching. && .AVIATION.../For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon/ Issued at 1213 PM CST Thu Jan 16 2020 VFR conditions with diminishing wind through 10Z.
