.A strong Arctic cold front will pass through the state Wednesday
afternoon and evening. Gusty northwest winds and light snow 
immediately behind the front may lead to areas of blowing snow 
over northern Iowa, including the potential for near-blizzard 
conditions in northwest Iowa where recent snowfall has occurred. 
Rapidly falling temperatures will also accompany the front, which
could lead to a flash freeze if local roads are wet or slushy.

.DISCUSSION.../Tonight through Tuesday/

Tonight...Relatively quiet night tonight.  Surface high to the
southeast shifts southeast while a surface low develops over the
Northern Plains ahead of a short wave that will pass east.  For Iowa
this will mean a shift to more southerly winds at the surface and
some increasing mainly high clouds late.  Soundings show strong
winds off the surface going from 10 or less at the surface to
between 30 and 40 kts just a couple thousand feet above.  Likely
going to cause aviation issues.

Wednesday through Thursday...

A deep upper trough shifts out of the west and lifts northeast across
the Plains into the Upper Midwest.  This will push a surface low
out of the Southern Plains into the Great Lakes region and east.
Warmer air and moisture will push north into Iowa on Wednesday,
along with some decent lift.  Temps should initially be warm enough
for rain before transitioning to snow late in the day.  Further
north, an arctic front, ties to the above mentioned low will begin to
surge through the Northern Plains and into northwest Iowa in the
early to mid afternoon.  Strong wind and plummeting temps will
accompany the front, along with some light snow.  The thought right
now is that winds will not be strong enough for widespread blizzard
conditions, though a small portion of our northwest, according to
the blowing snow tool may see a brief period of near blizzard
conditions.  I issued a winter weather advisory, with the far
northwest segmented to allow for the possibility of an upgrade in
that area.  Behind the front, precip will end but strong wind and
very cold temps will drop wind chills across the north to wind chill
warning criteria.  Headlines will go out now for this with wind
chill advisory criteria being met across southern areas.  Far
southern Iowa may escape criteria but the wind and the wind chills
will be close enough not to split hairs.  Wind chill advisory goes
through 18Z Thursday though far northern Iowa may meet this through
the day.  Decided not to complicate headlines any further.  Mid
shift can extend wind chill advisory if trends still go that way,
but winds will be diminishing Thursday.

Thursday night...Brutally cold temps will continue Thursday night
but wind will be much lighter.  Additional headlines will be needed
but for now there are two different scenarios so will deal with
Thursday night headlines after the initial push on Wednesday.

Friday...High pressure shifts off through the day with return flow
moderating temps.  However, the best warm advection does not occur
until Friday night so highs Friday will be warmer than Thursday but
the real moderation occurs Friday night with the days climatological
highs occurring around midnight.

Saturday and beyond...several weaker shortwaves traverse the
Northern and/or Central Plains...depending on which model you want
to believe...bringing at least some chance for precipitation to the
state.  Model blends put PoPs in the forecast from Friday night
through Tuesday and the truth is that we will not see 4 days of
snow.  Tried to adjust PoPs to periods where better lift/forcing is
occurring and forecast QPF is higher.  Temps continue to moderate
with highs returning to normal or slightly above.

.AVIATION.../For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon/
Issued at 1232 PM CST Tue Feb 11 2020

Other than some brisk southwest winds through 22Z, VFR conditions
expected through the forecast period.  LLWS is forecast across
northern TAF's overnight.  Winds quickly increase to near 40kts
around 2K ft off the surface.

No hazardous weather is expected at this time.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

Several impacts are possible Wednesday afternoon into Friday
morning. Initially, light to occasionally moderate snow is
expected across much of central Iowa late Wednesday afternoon into
the night with light accumulations expected. In addition, rapidly
falling temperatures behind an arctic front may lead to flash
freezing conditions Wednesday evening in central Iowa. Strong
northwest winds may produce blowing snow on Wednesday night.
Finally, bitter cold wind chills are expected Wednesday night into
Friday morning.
