Winds will begin to diminish some through the late afternoon and early evening hours allowing visibilities to improve across northern Iowa. However roads remain nearly completely covered in snow and ice, so travel will continue to be difficult at times even when conditions improve into the evening. Across central Iowa, some areas of blowing snow still possible in rural areas, with seasonal driving conditions expected across the far south. Bitter cold temperatures and wind chills then to follow tonight into early Sunday morning. Limit time spent outdoors in the bitter cold, and provide shelter for outdoor pets. Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Des Moines IA 252 PM CST Sat Jan 18 2020 .DISCUSSION.../Tonight through Saturday/ Issued at 251 PM CST Sat Jan 18 2020 Tonight...Surface low over the Great Lakes at this time will continue to shift east and the pressure gradient over the state will continue to relax so the strongest winds will continue to diminish into the evening. However, most locations will remain at 15G25 mph through tonight and the combination of brisk winds and colder temps coming in will create wind chill values from 20 to 30 below across the north from this evening onward through Sunday morning. Southern locations will be hitting these types of wind chills from around midnight through Sunday morning. Consequently headlines for wind chills will need to be raised for tonight. Sunday and Sunday night...Trough pushing out of the Great Lakes area with large ridge developing over the Rockies and a surface high nosing into the Upper Midwest. The high will settle into the region through Monday night before shifting southeast on Tuesday. Very cold air will settle into the region...even colder than what we are currently experiencing. Winds will be much lighter than what we will see tonight but with the much colder temps, wind chill headlines will once again become necessary for Sunday night through Monday morning but will handle these events one day at a time. During the day Monday, there is a decent shortwave that will pass through the state. While some weak lift does exist over the state, the better lift is clearly west and south of the state. However, with the arctic airmass in place, it won't take much to squeeze out flurries from whatever meager moisture there is to deal with. For this reason I put scattered flurries in the forecast Monday morning forecast area wide, ending from north to south in the afternoon. Tuesday into Wednesday an upper ridge shifts east across the state with the surface high pushing into the eastern U.S. Temps will moderate and it will feel like a heat wave compared to what we will have been through. Wednesday through the rest of the forecast period things become a little more unsettled and models are still all over the place. On Wednesday, a deep trough over the Rockies begins to shift into the Plains. Warm advection and moisture starts streaming into the Upper Midwest. Temps will climb on Wednesday into the 30s and a subtle shortwave rides across Iowa during the day with some weak forcing occurring over the state. This may kick off some snow or rain and snow depending on when it starts, transitioning to rain or a wintry mix during the day then back to snow Wednesday night. Later Thursday through Friday the upper trough shifts into the Plains and develops a closed low. The Euro drives the low across KS and MO while the GFS is deeper and slower with the low initially then lifts it closer to Iowa on Friday. This solution would give us another winter storm for late week across central/southern Iowa. Right now there is low confidence in any one solution due to model uncertainty so the mainly chance PoPs we have going through the period will suffice but it remains the next system to watch.
