A low pressure system now over Manitoba will be the main weather
maker for the next 24 hours as it moves east across Ontario. Today
the tight pressure gradient ahead of it with the southerly winds
will produce a breezy day, with winds already in the 5 to 15 mph
range with gusts beginning to push into the 20 to 25 mph range.
Conditions on this side of the Low and cold front are generally
dry and relatively warm, though clouds will be on the increase
through the morning as the cold front approaches the area. While
these relatively warmer temperatures will feel extraordinary, the
highs I have in the forecast for today are only at or slightly
above normal for today. The cold front will move through the
forecast area this afternoon and early evening, causing winds to
diminish for a short time right with the front, only to increase
out of the northwest this evening, continuing overnight due to the
steep low level lapse rates and strong winds aloft. Upstream in
the strong cold air advection behind the front there are already
wind gusts in the 30 mph plus range, and I anticipate similar
conditions here tonight. The strong cold air advection is also
going to bring rapidly falling temperatures this afternoon and
evening. This is going to make for a rather bone chilling evening
for any trick or treat activities across the Northland. The steep
low level lapse rates overnight tonight will keep surface winds up
overnight, and will keep temperatures from dropping off too far
off the deep end, despite being post cold front with clearing
skies. The north winds, cooling temperatures aloft and resulting
low level lapse rates will generate lake effect showers along the
south shore tonight and Sunday morning. Have boosted both PoPs,
QPF and Snowfall along the south shore, and we are probably
looking at 2-4 inches of snow by Sunday morning along the higher
terrain of the South Shore. The strong winds may keep it from
staying fluffy and piling up nicely, but it should be coming down
at a fairly good rate at times. Sunday we will still have steep
low level lapse rates, a tight pressure gradient for the morning
hours at least, and once that moves off through the mid day and
afternoon hours, the winds will finally diminish during the
afternoon. Chilly temperatures to linger on Sunday as the
northwest winds, and clouds keep temperatures back in the 30s.
A large upper level ridge of high pressure is anticipated to
build over the central CONUS for much of the upcoming work week,
which should give us a period of warm and dry conditions with not
very much going on meteorologically speaking around the Northland.
Temperatures will get above normal for Tuesday through at least
Friday. The models are hinting at something interesting for Friday
into the weekend as the upper level ridge shifts off to the east,
but we will have to monitor how this evolves over the next few
days.

A deep area of low pressure over far northwest Ontario this
afternoon will push eastward today and will pull a cold front east
across northern Minnesota this afternoon. Winds will be gusty
both ahead of and behind the front. MVFR ceilings are expected and
scattered snow showers will develop and move over the terminals
this afternoon into early evening. Ceilings may improve to VFR for
a few hours just ahead of the cold front but will decrease back
to MVFR behind the boundary. Drier air is forecast to move into
the area Sunday morning with VFR conditions to return.

Small Craft Advisories and Gale Warnings remain in place over the
nearshore waters of western Lake Superior. Strong southerly winds
continue into the afternoon and will veer westerly by early
evening and veer northwesterly overnight. Gale Warning now in
effect from Sand Island to Saxon Harbor until 3 PM Sunday. Small
Craft Advisories in effect until 7 PM elsewhere and then Gale
Warnings take effect until 3 PM Sunday. There may be a lull in the
gale conditions for a time along the South Shore this afternoon,
but gales of 35 to 45 knots will return by this evening. Surface
high pressure will move into the region on Sunday and the pressure
gradient will relax during the afternoon and evening. By 00Z
Monday, winds will be west-northwest at 5 to 15 knots and will
back westerly and eventually southwesterly by 09Z Monday. Wind
speeds will increase once again and Small Craft Advisories may be
needed.
