What appears to be the most significant snow event, so far this
largely snowless winter season, is expected tonight well into
Tuesday.

First, Monday will feature increasing clouds and noticeably cooler
temperatures. Cloud layers will gradually thicken and lower
through this afternoon as the storm system approaches. At the same
time, NE winds will noticeably increase, as pressure gradients
respond to developing surface low pressure near Amarillo by 6 pm.
NE winds will gust to near 30 mph as the pressure gradients
tighten, and increased wind grids using 0z MAV as a guide.
Temperatures will be reduced much closer to normal for January
this afternoon, a function of gradual cold air advection at 850 mb
and increasing clouds. Contined to keep all zones dry through
6 pm.

The fun begins tonight. ECMWF is the preferred guidance from WPC
and this forecaster, and was followed closely for this forecast.
That said, since GEM/ECMWF were the first to catch on to this
system about 24 hours ago, all the other models are indeed
scrambling to catch up, and we have high model consistency and
certainty regarding accumulating snow for SW Kansas. ECMWF tracks
surface low from near Amarillo at 6 pm Monday to near Childress,
TX by 6 am Tuesday. Storm track continues to favor the heaviest
snow falling across the NE combined TX/OK panhandles, NW Oklahoma,
and approximately the southern half of SW Kansas. QPF grids are a
blend of the ECMWF/ECMWF ensemble-weighted WPC guidance, and the
new 00z ECMWF run, which was even wetter across Kansas. Even so,
my QPF grids are less than what the deterministic ECMWF is
showing. From these QPF grids, from midnight Tuesday to noon
Tuesday, calculated snow amount grids using a straight wet 10:1
ratio. This results in total storm snow amounts of at least 3-4
inches, roughly south of K-96 and along/east of US 83. Within this
broad area, all models continue to focus maximum forcing across
the south central counties during the midnight-noon Tuesday time
range, when the heaviest snow will fall. One of the factors that
has contributed to heavy snow total uncertainty is the cold air
supply being marginal. Importantly, all models have trended
colder, down to -2C at 850 mb, during the height of the
precipitation rates, which will support heavy wet snow down to the
surface. This increases confidence that the expected phase change
from rain to snow will be rapid and efficient. Large aggregate
snowflakes, helped along by nocturnal timing, will accumulate
rapidly on especially elevated/grassy surfaces. Road conditions
are more of a quandary; not sure how efficiently wet/warm roads
will receive snowfall. At any rate, after coordinating with WFO
Amarillo/Norman, have elected to issue a winter storm watch for
the southern CWA where upwards of 6 inches is looking probable.
Localized higher amounts, as high as one foot, are possible in
mesoscale banding, as shown, in various locations, by GFS/ECMWF
and now the CAMs. If this occurs, the most likely location would
be adjacent to the Oklahoma border, from Liberal to Medicine
Lodge. Concerning to this forecaster is how the ECMWF delays the
exit of the trowal/deformation zone, meandering it across the
southern/SE zones through at least the first half of Tuesday.
Given this extended residency time, a winter storm watch seems
appropriate. The day shift will be tasked with determining which
areas need a winter weather advisory and which need a winter storm
warning. Finally, increased north winds to MAV guidance as the
snow falls (MAV guidance) but with a wet snow, blowing snow will
be limited. Increased pops to 100% for many zones, and lowered
temperatures significantly Tuesday (again in line with MAV) with
continued north winds and cold advection all day (not to mention
the expected snowcover).

The winter storm watch will be in effect from midnight to noon
Tuesday. We have had very little snow this season, and impacts are
expected. Allow extra time to reach your destination. The Tuesday
morning commute is expected to be very messy.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Sunday)

The entire long term forecast remains dry, and NBM model blend was
accepted. Broad ridging Wednesday will moderate temperatures and
melt the anticipated snowcover. 00z ECMWF continues to track the
next closed low very far to the SW (south of El Paso, TX across
northern Mexico), much too far to generate precipitation in SW KS
on Thursday. A seperate northern stream shortwave will dive due
south through the plains on Friday. It too will be dry, but it
will serve to delay/prevent any significant warmup. All model
guidance continues to show a strong warmup next weekend, with at
least the western zones in the lower 70s Sunday afternoon.

An upper level disturbance will amplify over the southern plains
through tonight. Rain will develop 01-03z and change to snow

can be expected at KDDC/KLBL between 06 and 14z in the snow before
tapering off. The snow is not expected to be as heavy at KHYS,
with visibilities as low as 1 mile.
