Quick update to upgrade High Wind Watches to Warnings for WY Zones
116 and 117 and extend all Warnings through Noon MST Saturday.
Low-level CAG-CPR and CAG-BRX gradients peak near 55 and 70 mtrs
respectively between 09Z and 15Z Saturday. Surface trough stalls
near the I-25 corridor during this time with increasing pressure
gradient. West to southwest 700-800mb flow of 40-50 kt extends
into the southern Laramie Range and foothills. Winds are forecast
to subside Saturday afternoon as the gradients and winds aloft
diminish somewhat. Updates sent.

Primary forecast concern over the next 24 to 30 hours into Saturday
afternoon will be strong winds over the wind prone areas of southeast
Wyoming, mainly tonight through noon Saturday. Models still indicate
slightly more favorable conditions for wind gusts up to 65 mph
compared to last nights winds which were marginal. A few locations
did see gusts around 58 mph near Arlington and the I-80 Summit,
and with more favorable llvl pressure gradients tonight and subsidence,
decided to also upgrade the Arlington/Elk Mountain area for Interstate
80. Still think conditions are pretty marginal, but we should see
a few gusts around 60 mph as well as sustained winds over 40 mph
at times. Kept the High Wind Watch for the I-80 Summit and foothills
going for tonight with lower confidence in high winds. Otherwise,
temperatures have rebounded today with readings in the 50s across
the high plains. Expect temperatures to be several degrees warmer
tomorrow afternoon with highs in the low to mid 60s possible east
of the Laramie Range towards western Nebraska. Even Cheyenne may
see a high temperature near 60 degrees.

...WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR AREAS WEST OF
INTERSTATE 25 ON SUNDAY...
Synoptic models and ensembles remain on track for the next Pacific
storm system which will produce widespread snow accumulations for
southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska. Still looks like primarily
an isentropic lift/upslope/deformation event which tend to produce
moderate snow accumulations with occasionally heavy snowfall
rates. Exact snow accumulations will likely come down to
convective banding, snow ratios, and under-forecasting QPF which
is typical of overrunning/WAA events.
TIMING: Forecast start times for snowfall and impacts remain on
track, with a slight adjustment towards earlier timing over the
last 24 hours. This is good news since not much snowfall is
forecast for the Monday morning commute. Most of the snow will
fall between late Sunday morning up until midnight early Monday
morning.
SNOW ACCUMULATIONS: Most models remain on track and have been
consistent with accumulations...showing lighter amounts further
north and east and the moderate to heavy amounts further west
across Carbon and Albany counties in addition to the mountains.
The Laramie Range and Snowy Range may be the winner for total snow
accumulations with ample easterly upslope flow late Sunday
through most of the event. Expect only an inch or two of snow
across most of western Nebraska with locally higher amounts on the
ridges. The I-25 corridor and the Laramie Valley/North Platte
River Valley are lower confidence forecasts (for snowfall) due to
differences in the position of the best dynamic forcing and local
effects such as snow shadowing. Would not be surprised to see some
places along I-25 or the higher ridges near the Nebraska border
get a quick 6 or 7 inches of snow out of this event. However,
expect impacts to be roughly the same as with 4 or 5 inches.
Kept the Winter Storm Watch as is, since it is a bit too early to
upgrade to a warning. The most favorable areas to see warning
criteria snowfall are the I-80 Summit, Snowy Range, northern
Carbon county, and the northern Laramie Range where amounts over 8
inches will be common. Thankfully, winds do not appear to be much
of a problem with this system, with only some gusty winds up to
35 mph expected for a brief time Sunday afternoon and evening as
the front slides south. These winds will diminish a bit overnight
on Sunday before increasing again on Monday. Temperatures Sunday
and Monday will be below normal with highs in the mid 20s to mid
30s over most locations.

period. Winds will increase at all TAF sites: across southeast
Wyoming by 29/12Z, and across the western Panhandle by 29/18Z with

stronger winds aloft, expect some turbulence with descents/ascents,
and also near the mountain terrain. Celings will increase and
lower towards the end of the period from west to east ahead of
Sunday's winter system.
