A fast west to northwest flow aloft prevailed between a upper ridge
over the western CONUS and upper trough over the eastern CONUS. A
tight surface gradient existed across southern WY between a 998mb
low over northern MN and 1030mb high over the CO/UT border. 50-60kt
700-800mb flow extended along the I-80 corridor between Rawlins and
Cheyenne. Sustained westerly winds of 25-35kt with occasional gusts
up to 60kt continued over the southeast WY wind-prone zones. The
High Wind Warning for Cheyenne, Wheatland, Laramie and Shirley Basin
wil expire at 5 AM this morning, while the Warning continues for the
wind-prone zones until 5 PM this afternoon. 700-800mb winds decrease
below 45kt later this afternoon and evening, but increase above 50kt
overnight tonight. Also, the CAG-CPR/CAG-BRX 850mb gradients rise
above 70 meters at 12Z Tuesday. High wind headlines may be required
later today for the wind-prone zones. It will be milder today with
afternoon highs in the 40s to mid 50s.

The primary concerns will be the potential for strong winds, snow
accumulations and cold mid-week temperatures.
A potent upper trough moving onshore into the western CONUS this
evening will progress eastward into the Rockies and Plains Tuesday
through Wednesday. A strong cold front will usher in a much colder
air mass Tuesday night with 700mb temperatures plunging to -18 to
-20 Celsius Wednesday.
Prior to the frontal passage, downslope winds will result in high
temperatures rising into the 50s and low 60s east of the Laramie
Range. Strong westerly winds will also be an issue for holiday
travelers across the wind-prone areas of southeast WY.
Snow will develop west of the Laramie Range Tuesday afternoon and
spread across the remainder of southeast WY Tuesday evening. Most
of the Panhandle will not receive any snow. 06Z WPC ensembles have
trended upward a couple inches with QPFs between 0.25 and 0.50 inch
over the south central WY mountains. Snow accumulations of 5 to 9
inches are possible, and the combination of strong winds will create
areas of blowing snow. Later shifts may need to consider a Winter
Weather Advisory for the Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges. It will be
much colder Wednesday with highs in the teens and 20s. Wind chills
will range from the single digits below zero to the teens.
Low level gradients and winds aloft remain elevated Wednesday and
Thursday, followed by a lull Friday, and re-intensification once
again Saturday. Portions of the high plains outside the wind-prone
areas may be at risk for strong winds during this period.
After Wednesday, temperatures gradually moderate Christmas Eve
through Saturday under northwest flow aloft. The next upper trough
and cold front will bring light snow and cooler temperatures for
Sunday.
