A cold, blustery and unsettled Thursday across southeast Wyoming &
the western Nebraska Panhandle beneath 30 to 40 knot northwesterly
flow aloft. Wind gusts around 40 MPH will be common across a large
portion of the CWA, but should remain well below our local warning
criteria. Instability associated with very cold temperatures aloft
(-8 to -12 deg C at H7) will likely contribute to periods of rain/
snow showers across much of the area through this evening.
High wind potential returns to the Arlington/Elk Mountain area Fri
AM as surface pressure falls spread across north central and north
east Wyoming, forcing H7/H85 CAG-CPR gradients upwards into the 65
to 75 meter range once again. Low-level gradients are likely to be
the strongest overnight into early Saturday morning, but should be
strong enough to support high winds after 12z Friday w/ increasing
700 mb flow. Expect a few gusts to 60 MPH earlier Friday, climbing
to around 70 MPH Friday night. The models show a broad swath of 55
to 65 knot 700-800 mb flow spreading across a large part of south-
east Wyoming after 00z Friday evening. Strong subsidence will fill
in behind a surface trough over the I-25 corridor, contributing to
3-5 mb pressure gradients along the spine of the Laramie Range. We
expect this to support 60-70 MPH gusts over BRX in addition to the
I-80 Summit and adjacent foothills after 6 PM. GFS & NAM soundings
both show fairly steep lapse rates through the night as subsidence
becomes stronger and more widespread. The potential does exist for
high winds to spill into the adjacent valleys and high plains over
night Friday night into early Saturday morning. We have gone ahead
with a High Wind Watch for these areas, with specific timing based
on the above thinking. We currently expire the Watch at 18z Sat w/
the anticipation that a cold front will greatly diminish low-level
gradients after that time.

The pattern remains unsettled through a large part of the extended
forecast period. A shallow arctic cold frontal boundary will stall
along the Laramie Range from late Saturday night into early Sunday
with widespread light precipitation developing across east central
Wyoming into the northern Nebraska Panhandle. The potential exists
for up to an inch of snow accumulation overnight. Otherwise, there
will be daily chances for rain and/or snow showers across the area
with the passage of numerous mid & upper level disturbances.
