Updated forecast for today and into this evening to lower snow
levels by another 1000 to 1500 feet. Saratoga and Skyline just
changed over the moderate snow with webcams across the upper North
Platte River valley confirming the change over this morning. This
activity should help out fire fighting efforts with the Mullen
fire as KCYS radar has shown increased reflectivity across the
Snowy Range. Not expect high snowfall amounts in the valleys, with
mainly around a half inch to an inch on grassy and elevated
surfaces. Air Quality Alert will be localized to the Snowy Range
and Laramie Valley by noon today with improving conditions along
and east of the Interstate 25 corridor. High Wind Warning will
continue through tonight as planned.

Issued at 400 AM MDT Sun Oct 11 2020

A potent upper level trough was advancing east across the northern
Rockies. A surface cold front extended from extreme western ND
through central and southwest WY into northwest UT. Rain and snow
showers were increasing in coverage along and behind the front from
northern UT and southeast ID into western WY. A tightening low level
pressure gradient was producing strong and gusty southwesterly winds
west of the Laramie Range. Gusts of 40 to 50 mph were observed along
I-80 between Laramie and Rawlins.

The cold front will continue its eastward trek across southeast WY
and the NE Panhandle this morning and afternoon. Pressure falls
ahead of a potent shortwave will continue to strengthen the winds
early this morning. 700mb winds increase above 50 kt with the
Craig CO-Casper WY 700/850mb gradients above 55 meters this morning.
The 00Z models are on cue with the evolving bora wind event this
afternoon. Significant low-level cold advection will produce steep
low level lapse rates, with NAM/GFS soundings both showing 50-55
kt near the top of the mixed layer at Cheyenne and Laramie. Subsidence
occurs in the wake of the passing wave with substantial downward
omega over the southern Laramie Range to Cheyenne. High Wind
Warnings are in effect from 11 AM to 6 PM for Laramie and Cheyenne,
I-80 between Laramie and Cheyenne from 9 AM this morning until 6
PM Monday, and I-80 between Rawlins and Laramie until 6 PM Monday.
Decided to upgrade the High Wind Watch to a Warning for the Bordeaux
area along I-25 from midnight tonight until 6 PM Monday with a
favorable strong west gap wind direction.

Rain and high elevation snow showers will spread east across southeast
WY and the western NE Panhandle through the day as the front passes
through. QPF outside the mountains will be light, generally less
than a tenth of an inch. The Snowy and Sierra Madres may measure
up to a half inch of liquid precipitation with an ideal upslope flow.
Snowfall of 1 inch is expected over the north Laramie Range, with 2
to 3 inches over the Snowy and Sierra Madres. The showers will taper
off from west to east late this afternoon. The strong west to southwest
low level flow ahead of the will transport patchy smoke across much
of southeast WY into the western NE Panhandle this morning. As winds
shift to the west and northwest this afternoon, patchy smoke will
be confined along and south of the I-80 corridor from the Snowy Range
east through Cheyenne and Sidney. Temperatures will warm into the
60s and lower 70s ahead of the front over the high plains. Temperatures
will fall steadily after fropa into the 50s this afternoon.

Strong winds are likely Monday with 700mb winds of 50-60 kt and 700/850mb
gradients peak from 60-75 meters. Wind prone areas including Arlington,
I-80 Summit and Bordeaux can expect peak gusts of 60 to 70 mph, with
45 to 55 mph for surrounding areas including Rawlins, Laramie, and

as the winds aloft and gradients relax. High temperatures Monday will
be mild with downslope winds pushing the mercury into the 60s to
lower 70s.

A fast west to northwest flow aloft will prevail Tuesday and Tuesday
night. GFS/NAM 700mb winds increase from 40-45 kt Tuesday afternoon
to 60-70 kt Tuesday night and Wednesday morning across gap wind prone
areas of southeast WY. Likewise, the Craig CO-Casper WY 700/850mb
height gradients ramp up from 45-55 meters to 65-75 meters. Thus,
confidence is increasing for another high wind episode at that time.
The flow aloft veers to northwesterly as a potent shortwave tracks
southeast from the northern Rockies into the northern/central Plains
and Midwest Wednesday into Thursday. This wave will drive a cold
front through the CWA Wednesday accompanied by isolated rain and
snow showers. After highs in the 60s to lower 70s Tuesday and
Wednesday, highs Thursday will be in the 40s to mid 50s.

Friday and Saturday, the upper ridge axis over the eastern Pacific
slowly moves inland. This will dislodge the upper trough over central
CONUS, with northwesterly winds aloft decreasing. Both days will be
breezy. 700mb temperatures rise into the lower to mid single digits
Celsius, yielding high temperatures in the 60s to around 70.

Blustery conditions today as a frontal boundary moves through the
region in the next couple hours with gusts into the 30 and 40 kt
range. Behind the front sites like KLAR and KRWL have seen sharp
wind increases and periods of showers through about 00z today.
Overall VFR conditions expected to persist outside of precip
bands.

A passing upper level low pressure system and cold front will produce
rain showers and high elevation snow showers today. Strong westerly
winds with gusts of 45 to 65 mph will occur ahead of and behind the
front. Winds will remain strong and gusty tonight and Monday for the
wind prone areas of southeast Wyoming. Critically low humidities are
expected Monday afternoon for the southeast Wyoming plains and southern
Nebraska Panhandle. Another cold front will produce strong winds and
isolated showers Wednesday and Wednesday night.
