Overnight WV/IR imagery loop revealed a upper trough axis from
southeast Canada through the Great Plains, with upper ridges
offshore both coasts. Large scale lift in left-front quadrant of
120-kt upper level jet combined with shortwave riding NW-SE along
a stalled surface front over southeast WY was generating convective
bands with moderate snowfall. Most of the activity was confined
south of a Wheatland to Kimball line, with accumulations of one to
two inches. Cancelled the Winter Weather Advisory for the South
Laramie Range as snow showers shifted east into western/central
Laramie County. Light snow will linger into the morning hours then
gradually end as the region of lift shifts to the southeast. The
exception will be over the higher terrain along and south of the
CO border where orographic flow will produce some snow showers.
After the snow ends this evening, attention turns to the potential
for strong winds for the southeast WY wind-prone areas beginning
overnight tonight and continuing periodically through Saturday.
700-800mb flow increases to 45-55 kt after 06Z tonight, and 55-65
kt Friday along and west of the Laramie Range. CAG-CPR and CAG-BRX
850mb gradients peak 65-70 and 85-90 mtrs between 09Z and 21Z
Friday. Gradients decrease below 50 mtrs after 00Z Saturday, however
700-800mb flow remains 45-55 kt. The start time of the High Wind
Watch was changed from 15Z to 09Z Friday because of the quicker
onset of the stronger gradient flow.
Below normal temperatures will continue today under cyclonic flow
aloft and 700mb temperatures between -12 and -18C. Downslope flow
and 700mb temperatures near 0C will result in warmer temperatures
Friday across the high plains. Undercut warmer GFSMOS to account
for existing snow cover with high temperatures in the 40s to lower
50s. Another shortwave and associated Pacific front will move
through Saturday bringing cooler temperatures and scattered snow
showers west of the Laramie Range.
.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Wednesday)

Medium range models/ensembles depict a fast zonal flow becoming
a more amplified flow, with more significant differences Tuesday
and Wednesday. The GFS develops a split flow with a closed low
off the northern CA coast, and a more progressive northern stream.
The ECMWF maintains a progressive flow throughout, with a upper
ridge over the Pacific coast states. A strong shortwave trough
and associated cold front will move through the CWA early Monday,
preceded by windy conditions Sunday. Ample moisture, orographics
and large scale lift will lead to periods of moderate to heavy
snowfall over the higher terrain, especially the Snowy/Sierra
Madre mountains where up to two feet of snow will be possible.
Lower elevations can expect one to two inches. High temperatures
in the 30s and 40s Sunday will be replaced by teens to mid 30s
Monday through Wednesday.

Wyoming will slowly move south out of the area through 1400 MDT
with MVFR ceilings/visibilities at Cheyenne and Laramie lifting to
VFR. VFR expected elsewhere through the rest of today. Main
concern tonight will be the potential of reduced visibility in
blowing snow for Cheyenne, Laramie and Rawlins as the winds
increase and we see gusts up around 25 kt. Right now kept
visibilities to MVFR category after 05Z with unlimited ceilings.
