High pressure will build into the region today with tranquil and chilly conditions, then a significant coastal storm will affect central Pennsylvania Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night with widespread heavy snow likely. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/... Satellite indicates abundant lake effect stratocu continues to cover the western half of PA early this morning, while subsidence east of the Appalachians results in mostly clear skies across the lower Susquehanna Valley. Still can't rule out a few light snow showers or flurries across the northwest mountains overnight. However, low inversion heights indicate little to no chance of any accumulation. Weak cold advection and an active northwest breeze will result in slowly falling temperatures this morning, with readings at dawn likely ranging from the low to mid 20s in most parts of the forecast area. Dry weather and chilly conditions are expected Tuesday and Tuesday night, as a large area of high pressure drifts east from the Grt Lks into southern Quebec. Forecast soundings indicate lake effect stratocu will hang tough for much of the day over the northwest mountains. Otherwise, expect a decent amount of sunshine, filtered at times by a bit of cirrus. Max temps in the mid to upper 20s NW and upper 30s in the SE will be a few degrees below normal. Expect thickening cirrus to stream into the area late Tuesday night ahead of southern stream trough lifting out of the Miss Valley. Guidance supports seasonally chilly temperatures with lows in the upper teens north, to the mid 20s over the southeast counties. && .SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/... Midweek storm is showing increasing potential to bring widespread significant impacts to Central Pennsylvania Wednesday and Wednesday night. Small variations in the storm track on the bulk of operational models and EFS guidance are mainly distracting at this point. The preponderance of guidance from man and machine is that we will be in the bullseye for the highest snow amounts over all of the eastern U.S. for this storm. The changes overall to the Wednesday-night 24 hours are very very small. But, as one forecaster said, we may end up breaking the internet when we publish the first storm-total SF forecast for the impending storm very shortly. The contours will go up to 20". The lowest numbers are in the NW. After collaboration with WPC and the neighboring offices, we have settled on a Winter Storm Watch for most of the CWA. We have left the NW 6-7 counties out for the time being, though their totals do look like a good 4-6". Nothing to sneeze at, surely. The majority of the snow will fall between 18Z Wed and 06Z Thurs, but we used the rough 8" contour for the watch as a starting point as the snow will probably be longer than that simple 12hr period. There may be additions to the watch later today. The synoptic setup is ideal with high pressure over eastern Canada, an upper and increasingly-negatively-tilted trough digging into the Ohio Valley, and a surface low expected to rapidly deepen as it progresses off the eastern seaboard overnight Wednesday as a full- blown nor'easter. Temperatures will be cold enough across most of the region to support snow as the primary precipitation type with potential for a mix of snow/sleet/freezing rain to nudge their way into far southeastern PA. Perhaps the only downside to this set up is the progressive nature of the system - less than 24 hours of precipitation it total. Regardless, this will be the most significant snow storm since November 2018, and maximum snowfall amounts will likely surpass the totals from just over 2 years ago. The vast array of model guidance continues to paint a compelling picture of significant snowfall totals across much of the Commonwealth. EC and GFS operational guidance point to localized snowfall totals exceeding 1 foot with ensemble means in the 6-12 inch range. The National Blend of Models 50th percentile snowfall amounts ending 12Z Thursday range from 6 to 12 inches, with 8" snowfall exceedance probabilities of >70% in the Susquehanna Valley. Wobbles in storm track are inevitable over the next several days, but confidence continues increase in a significant snow storm affecting the Commonwealth Wednesday and Wednesday night. Short of specific snowfall totals, here's what we know: -Significant snowfall accumulations possible Wednesday and Wednesday night across portions of Central Pennsylvania. -Significant travel disruptions from slippery, snow-covered roads and reduced visibility Wednesday late morning through the predawn hours on Thursday morning. -Highest snowfall totals expected along a line from NW to SE somewhere between State College and Harrisburg, with local accumulations exceeding 1 foot. -Snow exits by Thursday morning with fair and seasonably chilly conditions to finish out the week. Here's what will be ironed out in the coming days: -Exact track of the surface low, which will determine corridor of heaviest snowfall. -Northward extent of warm air, which will determine where snow will mix with sleet/freezing rain and significantly reduce accumulations. -Extent of dry air entrainment on the NW side as cold, dry air surges in. This will have a big impact on the snowfall gradient in NW PA. -Reasonable range of snowfall totals: improved confidence based on model ingestion of upper air soundings and dense observational network on land as surface low takes shape. && .LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... Coastal low and associated snow should be exiting eastern Pa by Thursday morning. The rest of Thursday looks chilly with plenty of clouds, especially across the Alleghenies, as upper trough swings into the region. Have added mention of scattered snow showers Thursday night across the Alleghenies associated with the passage of a shortwave diving through base of trough. Confidence remains high for fair and seasonable conditions Friday/Saturday, as upper ridge builds over the area. Latest GEFS and ECENS support a chance of snow/rain showers late next weekend with the passage of a weak cold front. A low tracking to our west and trailing cold front could bring our next chance of either rain or snow showers by late Monday or Monday night of next week. && .AVIATION /08Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
