.SYNOPSIS...
A large area of rain and showers will push northeast across the
Commonwealth, as a fast moving low lifts northeast from the
Central Appalachians and over the Susquehanna Valley of
Pennsylvania this afternoon. This afternoon, a few fast-moving
strong to potentially severe thunderstorms are possible across
the Lower Susquehanna and points east.

A return to colder temperatures will occur Tuesday and
Wednesday accompanied by a brisk west to northwest wind
and frequent snow showers across the Western Mountains
of the state with several inches of snow accumulation
expected on the ridges near, and to the west of Route 219.

The next storm wouldn't be until the weekend, but confidence
is low for the time being.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Steadiest rainfall is lifting east and north of my area late
this morning. Still some pockets of heavy rain over the mid Susq
River Valley through midday before the leading edge of a well-
defined dry slot seen in WV Sat imagery sweeps NNE across much
of the Central Ridge and Valley Region of the state this
afternoon.

The potent 990-992 mb sfc low will located right below the nose
of the dry slot, with a brief period of breaks in the layered
cloud cover to the east of the low, combining with the NW edge
of anomalously high PWATs near 1.5 inches, to produce sfc based
CAPE of 400-700 j/kg SE of a line from KTHV to KMUI. The tail
end of an area of 400+ M2/S2 0-1 km SRH will combine with the
brief elevated sfc-based cape to produce some discrete, fast
moving low-topped mini supercells or a quasi-NCFRB across the
Lower Susq during the mid to late afternoon hours. This severe
weather threat for our CWA will be a quick hitter in a
relatively small area this afternoon, with rain tapering to
showers or some drizzle elsewhere as the seeder-feeder high
cloud shield peels off quickly to the NNE, leaving just some
warmer/shallow low clouds for late today through much of tonight
across Central PA and the Susq Valley. SPC has maintained SLGT
risk covering Lancaster County and portions of York County.

Max temps this afternoon will show about 20-25 deg F of
variation from the far NW to far SE corners of the CWA. Highs
over the NW mtns and Laurel Highlands (to the west of the sfc
low track) will be in the 40s, while the Lower Susq Valley will
see a high in the mid 50s to lower 60s.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
There should be an extended lull in the precip across Central
PA late today through early tonight beneath the dry slot and
within a region of shallow cold advection in the wake of the sfc
low that will be lifting NNE across Central NY state.

Again, expect some breaks in the clouds with just some patchy
drizzle on the ridges or a few stray showers east of the
Allegheny Front. The eastern edge of cold conveyor belt/
synoptic snow will be near the Route 219 corridor early tonight,
before sliding slowly east early Tuesday along with deepening
cold air.

Bands of enhanced FGEN/LES likely within the broader snow area
early Tuesday as depicted by the HREFV2 (and its individual
members) with good upstream fetch off Lake Huron and a decent
length of Central and Western Lake Erie. compact mid and upper
short waves moving through the base of the upper low that will
be lifting northward across the Alleghenies Tuesday morning
will also lead to some brief periods of MDT to heavy snow near
and to the west of a line from KJST to KFIG and KELZ.

Based on these factors noted above, have expanded the Winter
Weather Advisory (beginning at 09Z Tuesday) to include Mckean,
Elk and Clearfield counties where storm total snowfall should be
in the 2-5 inch range, with the highest totals near and to the
West of Route 219. Rain showers early Tuesday morning to the SE
of the Allegheny Front will gradually mix with and change to
mainly snow showers during the day.

Storm total snowfall is looking very similar to what we have
been advertising the last couple of days (from this one-two
punch of synoptic/cold conveyor belt, then LES/Upslope enhanced
snows), which is 3-5 inches across the Laurels and 4-8 inches
across much of Warren County with up to 10 or 12 inches across
the perennial snowbelt over the far NW corner of the county.

The snow will likely impact both commutes AM and PM on Tues.
Daytime may keep the ratios/numbers down some if we can manage
to get above 32F.

Chance of precipitation will be minimal to the SE of Interstate
81 on Tuesday.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Lake effect snow showers will linger in northwestern zones into
Wed afternoon as the cold air deepens and a deep and fairly
well aligned west to northwest flow develops while the mid and
upper level low centers move northward into Quebec. Snow showers
will likely taper by later in the day Wed as a subsidence
inversion lowers ML heights below 1 km. Wednesday will likely
see the lowest daytime highs of the week, though only a few
degrees lower than on Tuesday. Highs will range from around the
freezing mark in the northern tier to the low 40s in the lower
Susq Valley. Westerly winds gusting 20-30 mph will make it feel
even chillier.

Another cut-off low drops into the Upper MS Valley Wed night
into Thu, pumping up a ridge in advance of it and bringing
slightly milder air. There is a lot of model uncertainty with
how the pattern eventually plays out next weekend with timing
and phasing of the cut off low. Possible scenarios range from a
storm similar to what we will see early this week with rain
transitioning to snow. The most recent EURO takes the cut off

MVFR to IFR conditions developing this morning from SW to NE as
rain spreads across the region. As a dry slot moves across
central PA this afternoon there may be a window of improvement
from IFR to MVFR or even VFR conditions, especially at KAOO, KMDT
and KLNS.

Later tonight through at least Wednesday morning, snow will be
across the west and northwest with an extended period of IFR
restrictions from BFD-DUJ-JST, while MVFR will likely work back
into the central mountains by Tue morning. The southeast should
be dry with VFR conditions.

Outlook...

Tue...Transition to snow likely from the Alleghenies westward as
ceiling restrictions continue. Improving conditions SE. Breezy
west wind.

Wed...Ceiling restrictions possible NW, otherwise VFR.

Thu...Mainly VFR conditions.

Fri...Chance of rain and snow showers.
