.SYNOPSIS...
Weak low pressure gathering overhead and to the south of the
state will pull cold air in from the north. As a stronger low
pressure area takes shape over the Mid-Atlantic, mixed
precipitation in the north will turn to snow. gradually the
change from rain to snow will occur elsewhere through the night
and early Friday.

Gusty northwest winds and seasonably cold temperatures will
follow for Friday afternoon into Saturday with bands of lake
effect snow showers impacting the NW mountains. The seasonably
cold temperatures over the weekend are forecast to trend warmer
into next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 7 AM THIS MORNING/...
Temps rising over the S, while holding close to fzg in the far
N. As the low pressure continues to gather itself, the cold air
will continue to infiltrate the northern mountains. Timing still
on track, and only minor tweaks to temps were made this update.

Prev...
Rain is overspreading the area again from W/SW to E/NE and
colder air is not far away. Still some low to mid 30s reading
across the northern tier. Blend of hi-res output gives
changeover to freezing rain as boundary layer cools first across
the NW this evening, and this spreads east and south to cover a
large area mainly north of I-80 through the pre dawn hours. Cold
air becomes established enough over the NW by that time to
changeover to snow, and expect a few to several inches to
accumulate across the northern half of central PA as well as the
Laurel Highlands. Timing is problematic as the Friday morning
commute will be negatively impacted with one inch per hour rates
as the changeover marches eastward from dawn through mid
morning. The lower levels are initially mild and that will cut
down on accums for areas of the Central Mountains, but farther
north and east, it appears several inches are likely. 50th
percentile amounts of 4-6" are supported north of I-80 with
locally 7"+ (75th percentile) not a far stretch for Tioga/N
Lycoming and Sullivan Counties. Advisories issued for slightly
less than the northern half of central PA for combo of glaze of
freezing rain and a few to several inches of snow, while sub
advisory snow amounts no icing expected central and south
central areas, and plain rain for the most part over the far
Lower Susq.

.SHORT TERM /7 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
Advisories run through midday hour as rain/snow changeover
pushes into far eastern PA. Gusty northwest winds up to 30 mph
expected as temperatures fall through the 20s north, perhaps
producing isolated power outages where ice accretion occurs late
tonight. Strongest winds are channeled north and east of the
region, so no Wind Advisory will be issued at this time for my
areas.

Temps will drop sharply by 12 to 15 deg F within just a
few hour period Friday morning (then more slowly afterward) , as
the Sfc Cold slides through and the Low Pressure Center
strengthens over the Lehigh Valley and Poconos. Transition to
lake effect and upslope snow showers across the Alleghenies
later Friday into Friday evening with additional light
accumulations continuing on a gusty northwest wind.

A little wrap around snow/snow showers within the NW flow for
Friday night into Sat. Otherwise, mostly dry and cold
conditions are expected for the weekend.

Curious patch of snow is generated by many models Sat PM/Sun AM
in the otherwise fast, mostly zonal flow.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Medium range guidance is in good agreement early next week,
tracking a fast-moving shortwave north of the state, with a
dying cold front sagging south across the state Monday. A plume
of anomalous pwats accompanying the fropa should yield a good
chance of rain, the steadiest of which is likely over the Laurel
Highlands due to orographic forcing. A wave of low pressure is
then likely to form on stalled front south of the Mason Dixon,
bringing the potential for lingering rain over southern Pa into
early Tuesday. Surface ridging is progged over the region later
Tuesday. However, can't rule out scattered rain/snow showers
with the passage of an upper level shortwave late Tuesday/Tues
night.

Both the 18Z GEFS and 12Z ECENS support fair weather Wednesday,
as surface high pressure builds over the state. After that,
model spread/forecast uncertainty ramp up considerably. The
NAEFS indicates a cold front passage early Thursday, possibly
accompanied by a few rain/snow showers. The EC and EC ensemble
support a less progressive upper level pattern with a surface
low lifting northeast through the Ohio Valley late next week,
bringing a chance of rain, or snow to rain, across central Pa.

.AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Widespread IFR/LIFR conditions expected to continue this
morning across central PA airspace. Light rain, drizzle, and fog
will transition to snow from west to east 07-15Z with a brief
period of icy mix possible during changeover. A stripe of
moderate to locally heavy snow is probable 12-16Z from KJST
through KIPT.

Winds will increase quickly from the northwest (280-310 degrees)
by mid morning with frequent gusts in the 25-35kt range expected
through the afternoon. The northwest flow will spell improvement
to the east of the Alleghenies with return to VFR expected
everywhere except KBFD/KJST. Snow showers and MVFR/IFR conditions
will linger over the western mtns into the evening.

Sun...Evening light snow possible northwest Pa.

Mon...Rain/low cigs possible, mainly Laurel Highlands.

Tue...AM rain/low cigs possible, mainly southeast Pa.
