...Lake Effect Snow Will Continue in the Primary Snowbelt...

.The snow has transitioned to lake effect as flow shifted to a
westerly direction. This forced the bands of snow to develop over
the lakeshore counties this afternoon. The snow bands are expected
to shift north and south as troughs of low pressure move through
the area this afternoon through Saturday. Moderate snow intensity
is expected with snowfall rates up to 1 inch per hour where
squalls persist. Westerly winds with gusts to 30 mph will cause 
blowing and drifting snow, which could significantly reduce 
visibility. The strongest winds will be closest to Lake Erie. 
Temperatures in the teens and 20s this afternoon will drop into 
the lower to middle teens tonight. Wind chills will fall into the 
single digits to near zero tonight.

...Lake Effect Snow To Continue Across Northeast Ohio And
Northwest Pennsylvania Tonight...

.The heaviest lake effect snow across the primary snowbelt is
expected to occur late this evening and overnight. By late tonight
into tomorrow morning, the heaviest lake effect bands will
transition primarily offshore and into Buffalo's area as the
orientation becomes more southwest to northeast. Moderate snow 
intensity is expected with snowfall rates around an inch per hour
where squalls persist. Westerly winds with gusts to 35 mph will 
cause blowing and drifting snow, which could significantly reduce 
visibility. The strongest winds will be confined to the lakeshore. Temperatures
in the teens and 20s this evening will drop into the lower to 
middle teens tonight. Wind chills will fall into the single digits
to perhaps below zero this evening and overnight.

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure east of Lake Ontario will depart northeast into Canada
today, leaving behind a residual trough over the eastern Great
Lakes. High pressure will build in from the southwest on Saturday.
The next low pressure system will enter the Great Lakes region on
Sunday night and extend a cold front across the area on Monday. High
pressure will return to the region on Tuesday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Multiple lake effect snow bands have developed from Lorain
County east along the lakeshore. The latest radar continues to
show the bands starting to shift to a more westerly direction.
As time passes during the rest of the morning, the band should
become a primary band that will extend up the lakeshore during
the afternoon into tonight. More significant snow accumulations
are expected in the warning area during this time period.
Current forecast trends are on target with the transition of the
multibands to a single band so very little if any adjustment
will be needed at this time. As the bands shift up the
lakeshore, snow should begin to taper off across the inland
counties and we anticipate allowing the southern warning to
expire on time. Areas in the western portion of the forecast
still have a shot at developing some lake effect off Lake
Michigan with light accumulations there. Temperatures should
hold steady through the afternoon in the lower 20s and upper
teens before falling into the teens tonight.

Previous Discussion...
Snow remains the top concern of the near term forecast period. A
broad area of snow remains over the region, but the snow shield
is losing a bit of its luster as the better frontogenetic
forcing pulls away from the region and the moisture begins to
become more concentrated in the lowest levels of the atmosphere.
Therefore, snowfall across the area this morning has generally settled
to half inch per hour or less rates. All eyes now turn to the
transition to a lake effect snow event. Lake effect snow bands
are beginning to organize over central Lake Erie this morning,
taking advantage of a west-northwest fetch over the lake, good
low-level moisture, and fairly good lake-induced instability
marked by sfc-850mb delta T's of 18C. However, these bands are
still struggling a bit due to the influence of the nearby low
pressure system and some shear and low inversion heights are
keeping the snow from getting too out of hand this morning.

Cuyahoga Counties, which

This will all change over the next 8 to 12 hours as the low
pressure system departs the region, wind shear diminishes, and
inversion heights rise in persistent westerly flow. West-east
lake effect snow bands will develop and bring heavy lake effect
snow with rates up to 2 inches per hour at times this afternoon
into tonight. Favored lake effect snow areas will be closest to
the lakeshore and have maintained highest snow amounts in Lake,
Ashtabula, and Erie PA Counties. There has been increasing
confidence in high snowfall totals in Erie County PA as a more
robust lake effect snow band is expected to form by this evening
as classic lake effect snow components align with a well
saturated DGZ, good lift in this important DGZ layer, and
inversion heights rising to 8000 ft. This is when we suspect
that snowfall rates will maximize to 2 inches per hour, if not
higher for a brief period. High pressure begins ridging in from
the southwest late tonight into Saturday, allowing for more
southwesterly winds across the region. This should push the lake
effect snow bands north, becoming more of an issue for western
New York for the end of the period.

Elsewhere, weather conditions will marginally improve through
the period with scattered snow lingering this morning before
drying out later in the period. Some snow showers and low clouds
resulting from lake effect off Lake Michigan may impact the I-75
corridor later today, resulting in minor accumulations.
Temperatures across the area have cooled significantly and will
largely remain in the teens or 20s before falling back into the
teens tonight. Wind chills across the region will be low in the
single digits or near zero.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Surface trough shifts south again Saturday evening with light snow
showers expanding across portions of the snowbelt and especially
Erie County Pennsylvania. Favored areas may see additional
light accumulations before moisture at 850mb strips away and
snow begins to taper off. Outside of the snowbelt, clouds will tend
to clear from the south with winds becoming light. Another cold
night is expected with lows in the teens across inland NE Ohio and
NW Pennsylvania.

Low pressure will develop over the Midwest on Sunday ahead of a fast
moving trough aloft. As this low reaches Lake Michigan, southerly
flow and warm advection will occur across the area with highs
reaching the upper 30s to lower 40s. This system will track
northeast across the Central Great Lakes through Sunday night,
bringing scattered light rain showers, possibly changing over to
snow as another cold front wraps in from the west on Monday. A lack
of deep moisture will present some limitations for lake effect snow,
but the westerly fetch and return of the cold airmass should result
in snow showers near Lake Erie Monday evening.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
High pressure will be overhead by Tuesday. The long range pattern
remains active as another deep upper level trough develops over
the western United States. Strong southwesterly flow sets up ahead
of the approaching trough with 500mb heights of 560+ dm. Above
normal temperatures are likely Wednesday into Thursday, accompanied
by a plume of deep moisture. Left pops at chance level due to
uncertainty in timing but a period of widespread rain is expected.
This will result in significant melting of the snowpack and will
need to keep an eye on the amount of run-off from rain and melting
snow.

.AVIATION /12Z Friday THROUGH Tuesday/...
Snow lingers across the region this morning, resulting in a mix
of MVFR to LIFR conditions at the terminals this morning.
Conditions will improve in Northwest and Central Ohio today as
snow exits and turns into a predominant lake effect event and
have TAFs improving to VFR at KTOL, KFDY, and KMFD by this
afternoon. Elsewhere, snow is going to linger for a majority of
the day and will keep fairly pessimistic conditions. KCLE and
KERI will be most impacted with heavier snow bands in those
terminals bringing extremely low vsbys and snow rates in excess
of one inch per hour. Eventually KCLE, KCAK, and KYNG improve by
Saturday morning but KERI will still be dealing with IFR/LIFR
snow through the end of the period. Winds will settle on a
westerly direction today and briefly increase this afternoon
with gusts to 30 knots possible. Winds at KERI could get to 35
kt gusts depending on lake effect snow band formation.

Outlook...Non-VFR expected from periods of lake effect snow
across Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania through
Saturday. Additional non-VFR possible in rain and/or snow
showers Sunday night into Monday.

.MARINE...
A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect for Lake Erie through
this evening. We are seeing water levels approach the critical
mark on the western basin again and will monitor the need for a Low
Water Advisory. Winds on Lake Erie will increase tonight as a
secondary trough crosses the lake while high pressure expands north
into the Ohio Valley. Have issued a Gale Warning for the east half
of Lake Erie from 10 PM to 10 AM from Lake County eastward although
the entire lake can expect winds to 30 knots. Small Craft Advisories
will be needed again behind the Gale for the remainder of Saturday.

Winds will decrease Saturday night then develop out of the south on
Sunday and increase to 15 to 25 knots as a warm front lifts north
ahead of the next low pressure system. This system will pull another
cold front east across Lake Erie on Monday with winds reaching 30
knots again. Small Craft Advisories will likely be needed again
Sunday night through Monday night.
