What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this winter storm warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Cleveland, OH wrote its last area forecast discussion before this winter storm warning went out at Nov 30, 12:45 AM EST, 2 hours 6 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Nov 30, 12:45 AM EST, 2 hours 6 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Cleveland OH
1245 AM EST Mon Nov 30 2020

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure over south central Alabama will track north to
Pennsylvania on Monday and linger over the eastern Great Lakes
through Tuesday. Colder air will arrive on the back side of this
system bringing snow and gusty winds through mid- week. High
pressure will expand north up the Ohio Valley on Wednesday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Feeling good about delaying he onset of any light precipitation
earlier with radar returns on area TDWR radars not indicating
anything north of a line from Preble County to Pike County.
Otherwise only made minor changes to hourly temperatures and
sky cover through the overnight.

Previous Discussion...
An abrupt change in the weather will occur on Monday with
Winter Storm Watches and Winter Weather Advisories issued for
the entire forecast area beginning on Monday.

Water vapor imagery depicts an upper level low near Arkansas while
another upper trough digs across the Upper Midwest. The first upper
low will move north into the Ohio Valley overnight and be absorbed
by the deepening trough to the west. Meanwhile surface low pressure
will will track north across Pennsylvania, and will be near Buffalo
by 00Z Tues. Moisture will stream north into the region overnight
with precipitation expanding northward in the early morning hours.
Precipitation will develop with overrunning in the east, beginning
in the form of rain and staying that way for much of the day. In the
west, precipitation will develop as frontogenesis increases aloft.
Precipitation will begin as a cold rain or rain/snow mix late
tonight given temperatures in the mid 30s overnight. The thermal
profile through the column will also be warm initially but will cool
quickly heading into Monday morning as northwest flow ramps up,
pulling cooler air into the back side of the system. Expecting a
transition to snow along the I-75 corridor towards 7 AM, then
expanding east towards the Mansfield area by midday and Cleveland
towards early evening, give or take a couple hours. It's possible
the transition could occur faster given good precip rates. Initially
snow will have trouble accumulating given warm ground temperatures
and may stick mostly to grassy or elevated surface until the colder
temperatures arrive towards sunset. Winter Weather Advisories go
into effect as early as 7 AM in NW Ohio, then expanding to central
and eastern areas by 4 PM. Temperatures will be crucial to precip
type change over with gradually falling temperatures through the day
and blustery northwest winds. Went with a blend of raw model
guidance for the temperatures.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
By Monday night, the upper-level low lingers across the region
through about Wednesday before moving off to the east. The
associated surface low is expected to briefly retrograde westward
across southern Ontario before slowly propagating northward away
from the area. There is still some variance in low track but at this
point, these small variances will have only a small impact.

The rain/snow line will continue eastward across our forecast area
Monday night as cold air advection occurs with westerly winds. The
vast majority of our forecast area should be transitioned to an
accumulating snowfall by late Monday night. Lake enhanced snowfall
is expected to continue through much of the day Tuesday before
diminishing from west to east Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

Lift from the upper-level trough will be prolonged as vorticity
maxima retrograde and rotate around the cyclone center through
Tuesday night. At least a portion of this lift will be in the
dendritic growth zone (DGZ), particularly when the coolest
temperatures aloft move across the area. Temperatures aloft at 850mb
will cool to around -7 to -9 deg C by Tuesday, which will provide
moderate lake-induced instability. This will provide lake enhanced
snow for areas downwind of Lake Erie, which include the typical
snowbelt regions.

Storm totals will be widely varying across the region. Highest
totals are expected to be in primary/secondary snowbelts
(Lorain/Medina east towards NW PA), where greater than 8" of snow is
possible with local amounts of greater than 12" are possible,
especially for the higher terrain areas of eastern Cuyahoga,
northern Geauga, and inland Erie, PA. For this reason, a Winter
Storm Watch has been issued. A Winter Weather Advisory has been
issued for the rest of our forecast area, where 2-6" of snow is
expected.

A lesser but important impact will be strong winds. Gusts of up to
30 mph will be possible, particularly during the afternoon hours of
Monday and Tuesday. This will reduce visibilities and possibly
create blowing snow (though less likely as this will mostly be a
wet snow).

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
High pressure will expand north up the Ohio Valley Wednesday night
behind the departing system. If winds end up dropping off, it could
be a pretty chilly night. Meanwhile another closed upper low will
develop over the Plains with shortwave ridging aloft. Models in poor
agreement with how long this system lingers over the Plains before
drifting east across the Ohio Valley. There is a chance of seeing
precipitation return to the area as early as Thursday night but
confidence is quite low. The forecast features slight chance pops
for the end of the week to account for this uncertainty with another
trough developing across the Great Lakes Region by next weekend.
Seasonal temperatures will trend cooler towards next weekend.

.AVIATION /06Z Monday THROUGH Friday/...
VFR across the area this morning, with a few patches of MVFR
ceilings just south of the area. The main story of the TAF
period will be deteriorating conditions later this morning
through tonight to MVFR, IFR, and even LIFR at times associated
with moderate to heavy snow.

An area of showers is currently moving north this morning,
approaching the vicinity of MFD. A few patches of MVFR
ceilings/vsbys are possible through the morning due to rain
showers, mainly at MFD/CLE/CAK/YNG/ERI. Heavier rain will arrive
across the TAF sites by late this morning/early afternoon,
lowering vsbys to IFR at times. The best chance for any
snow this morning appears to be at TOL/FDY this before changing
to a rain/snow mix by late morning/early afternoon.

Expect a transition to all snow once again at TOL/FDY by early
afternoon, bringing vsbys down to IFR and even LIFR at times in
areas of heavy snow. Heading into Monday evening, expect a
transition to rain/snow at CLE/MFD/CAK/YNG, then to all snow by
Monday night. Snow may be heavy at times, dropping vsbys to IFR
and even LIFR. A transition to rain/snow will occur near the end
of the TAF period at ERI.

Winds are currently light and variable across the TAF sites this
morning. This will quickly change with north to northwesterly
winds increasing to 15 to 20 knots with gusts of 25 to 30 knots
by later this afternoon and evening. Gusts of 30 to 35 knots at
CLE/ERI this evening/overnight cannot be ruled out.

Outlook...Non-VFR associated with snow throughout the day
Tuesday, becoming confined to NE Ohio and NW Pennsylvania
Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Non-VFR will persist
across ERI through Wednesday. Non-VFR may be possible again on
Friday associated with rain and/or snow showers.

.MARINE...
Northwest winds will increase quickly on Monday morning on western
Lake Erie as low pressure near the Gulf Coast tracks northward
towards Pennsylvania. Winds will increase to near 30 knots by midday
on the west end of the lake while the east end of the lake starts
off with a northeast wind that will ramp up more slowly as it backs
to northwest through the day. Small Craft Advisories have been
issued west of Willowick but will need to be expanded to the
remainder of the lake later Monday. Once in effect, Small Craft
Advisories will continue into Wednesday as winds gradually back
around to the west. Winds will be near 30 knots again Tuesday night
as they develop down the long fetch of the lake. Although winds
could briefly reach gale force, not expecting to reach Gales for a
substantial enough window to need a warning. Winds will gradually
decrease from west to east on Wednesday and Wednesday night as low
pressure pulls away to the northeast across Quebec and high
pressure expands north up the Ohio Valley.
