.Low pressure over Pennsylvania will move north into Quebec by
Thursday morning. Synoptic snow will become enhanced by flow off
of Lake Huron and Erie tonight. Colder air arrives with a wind 
shift to the west-northwest tonight with lake effect snow 
becoming the main concern for Northeast Ohio into Northwest 
Pennsylvania Thursday into the weekend.

* WHAT...Heavy lake effect snow expected. Total snow accumulations
  through Saturday of 6 to 12 inches with locally higher amounts
  possible where lake effect snow bands persists and across the
  higher terrain. Winds gusting as high as 40 to locally 50 mph
  along the lakeshore Thursday and Thursday night with blowing 
  and drifting snow.

* WHERE...Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, Ashtabula Inland and Ashtabula 
  Lakeshore counties.

* WHEN...From 10 PM this evening to 6 PM EST Saturday. In 
  particular, periods of heavy lake effect snow are expected 
  from mid morning Thursday through Thursday night and again 
  Friday night into Saturday.

* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. Areas of blowing 
  snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous 
  conditions could impact the morning and or evening commutes. 
  Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Moderate snow amounts of 3 to 5 inches are
  possible tonight. An additional 4 to 8 inches is likely from 
  lake effect snow Thursday and Thursday night. Lake effect snow

to the area is beginning to move northeast of the area. The snow
associated with the storm system is also moving east away from the

...Lake Effect Snow Will Impact the Primary Snowbelt...

.Lake effect snow will continue to develop off of Lake Erie into 
Saturday. Latest forecasts indicate that there will be several 
enhanced periods of heavy snow. The first may occur this evening 
into the overnight hours and could peak for the morning commute. A
surface trough will cross the area at some point on Friday with 
the lake effect bands likely focusing near the lakeshore. In the 
wake of the trough Friday evening into Saturday there will once 
again be an increase in the lake effect snow coverage. The 
secondary snowbelt may be impacted early Friday and then again 
Friday night.

Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will move northeast out of the Ohio Valley through
western Pennsylvania by Thursday morning and to Maine by Friday.
A trough will linger southwest over the local area Friday night
into Saturday followed by a high pressure ridge that will move
into the area Sunday. A warm front will move north across the
region Sunday night and low pressure will move north to the
eastern Great Lakes by Tuesday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Made tweaks to the wind forecast for the next 36 hours
increasing winds for tonight through Thursday in particular.
Otherwise no other changes with this mid morning update. Will
focus on incoming guidance and observations for adjustments to
the forecast for this afternoon and any headline changes.
Previous discussion follows.

Precipitation is beginning to expand over the western portions
of the forecast area at this time. This area will move northeast
into the local area from west to east this morning and will
continue to expand with time. Cold air advection will begin to
slip south into the area this afternoon and change the rain over
to all snow from west to east. Made some adjustments to the
changeover timing for this morning to a bit later today.
Otherwise, no other changes with this update.

An upper level trough will move east across the area during this
forecast period and will become negatively tilted by Thursday
morning. As this happens, surface low pressure developing over
the Ohio Valley will move northeast through southwestern
Pennsylvania and eventually to Maine. The surface low pressure
system is expected to rapidly intensify later tonight into
Thursday morning. Some slight warm air advection will take place
this morning in the eastern half of the forecast area while cold
air advection will begin to spill into the western half of the
area during the morning and the rest of the area this afternoon.
Initially, rain/snow mix in the east will transition over to all
snow by this evening while mostly snow will fall across the west
today. Only very light snow accumulations have been reported
across northwest Ohio at this time. Expecting best forcing area
to shift east to the western portions of the forecast area this
morning and the snow should begin to intensify through the day
in the west and progress east. Temperatures will remain nearly
steady in the west in the lower 30s and then fall into the 20s
tonight. The eastern portions of the area still have one more
shot at seeing highs today in the lower to middle 40s before the
bottom drops out in the cold air advection tonight. Tonight's
lows will drop into the lower 20s across the entire area with
highs Thursday in the middle 20s.

As the low pressure system sets-up over southwest Pennsylvania
tonight, expecting a pretty good swath of the synoptic snow
across the forecast area. The heaviest snow will occur over the
western portions of the area and will maintain accumulations of
4 to 6 inches across that area. Winter weather advisory will
remain in effect and will begin at 7 AM on schedule. Synoptic
snows will be lighter across the rest of the area today and will
primarily rely on lake effect snow.

As the surface low moves northeast Thursday, the synoptic snow
will transition to lake effect snow tonight into Thursday. There
is still some uncertainty on where the best snow will fall and
how much. As of right now, the best chance for lake effect snow
will occur Thursday afternoon into Thursday night as flow
becomes fairly well aligned during that period. Inversion lifts
to about 8K feet and instability increases but is not all that
exciting. Fetch length will also be the greatest during this
time frame as well as best dendritic growth descending into the
upward vertical motion across the area. The inversion starts to
descend quickly late Thursday night into Friday morning and much
drier air also begins to descend through the column. So, with
all that in mind, it is still too early to determine where we
will see widespread winter storm warning (lake effect snow
warning) criteria in the winter storm watch area. Will continue
the watch for now due to lack of confidence on the exact
locations of the heaviest snowfall.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
A strong low pressure system around 982 mb will be located just
north of the state of New York on the Canadian side by Thursday
evening. A deep west to northwest flow in the low and mid levels of
the atmosphere will be established across the Great Lakes region
Thursday night through Saturday. Cold air at the surface and cold
air advection will continue at 850 mb where temperatures will fall
to -15C to -18C. The lake effect snow machine will be in full force
with plenty of moisture coming from up stream lakes down across Lake
Erie. The primary Snowbelt looks like a slam dunk for heavy lake
effect snow over several days. The flow at first will be west to
west-northwest which will impact mainly northwest PA into far
northeast Ohio like Ashtabula County. This flow will continue
through Friday. A secondary mid level wave will move across the
eastern lakes by Friday evening. This feature will reinforce the
cold air advection as well as slight change the wind direction to
more northwesterly. This will also help energize the lake effect for
all of the primary Snowbelt with some snow showers trying to move
down into the secondary Snowbelt Friday night and Saturday. We will
leave the Winter Storm Watch for Heavy Lake Effect Snow as is with
this forecast update but will likely need some upgrades as the
snowfall amounts become more certain. High pressure at the surface
moves in late Saturday night which will cute off the flow for lake
effect and the weather begins to calm down over the Snowbelt
region.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A southerly or southeasterly flow returns late on Sunday on the back
side of the surface high. Clouds and moisture will again be on the
increase. The next upper level wave moves in by Monday morning with
precipitation moving in late Sunday night and Monday. It may be cold
enough at the onset of the precip for a brief light wintry mix
before temperatures warm up to have all rain on Monday. Temperatures
will be much milder for early next week but also a return to an
active and unsettled weather pattern with a series of storm systems
bringing rainfall to the area. We will have to monitor this weather
pattern setting up for any possible heavy rainfall threat.

.AVIATION /18Z Wednesday THROUGH Monday/...
Precipitation has become widespread across the area. For the
western sites snowfall will be the dominant precipitation type.
As the freezing line progresses eastward, rain will transition
to snow through the evening hours today. Some snow showers may
become heavy to moderate, reducing visibilities. Widespread snow
accumulation is expected with this event. Beginning Thursday
morning, winds will begin to increase from west to east, with
gusts approaching 30 knots. IFR and LIFR conditions will persist
through Thursday afternoon for all TAF sites. IFR and LIFR
conditions are expected to persist past this time for the
Cleveland and Erie, PA TAF sites as lake effect snow will
develop behind the retreating low. Some lake effect snowbands
may be locally heavy and winds will be gusting near 45 knots at
times. Heavy and blowing snow will reduce visibilities. These
conditions will persist into the early weekend.

.OUTLOOK...Non-VFR mainly in northeast OH and northwest PA, due
to lake effect snow Thursday through Saturday. Non-VFR returns
Sunday night into Monday with rain showers.

.MARINE...
Low pressure over the Ohio Valley will become stronger and deepening
as it moves northeastward towards upstate New York by Thursday
morning. Northeast to north winds will increase today and tonight 15
to 25 knots as well as higher onshore waves.  The strong low will be
near the eastern tip of Lake Ontario by late Thursday morning.
Strong westerly Gales will develop on Lake Erie for Thursday with 30
to 35 knot winds and gusts up to 45 knots. We will have the SCA for
today and tonight with an upgrade to a Gale Warning for the lake on
Thursday. The strong westerly winds continue into Thursday night
before the winds decrease a little bit and become more northwesterly
by Friday and Saturday. SCA conditions will continue through
Saturday. High wave action with onshore flow will be a concern as
well as lakeshore erosion and minor flooding. High pressure with
lighter winds moves in late Saturday night into Sunday on the
lake.
