.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will sink southeast across the central Great Lakes
towards the area today. Low pressure will deepen and track
northeast along the front tonight, moving northeast of the
region on Monday while forcing a cold front east across the
local area. High pressure will build east across the Ohio
valley late Monday through Tuesday night.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
Update...No big changes for the afternoon.

Original discussion...
Main focus of the near term period is a period of strong winds
on Monday as a rapidly deepening low pressure system moves
northeast across the Great Lakes region.

A few showers will push east-northeast across the region early
this morning on the nose of a low/mid level jet max/disturbance.
This activity is generally weakening with dry low levels, but
maintained some shower chances for a few hours. The remainder of
the morning is expected to be dry across the area, but some low
precip chances will spread north across the area early to mid
afternoon as low level moisture and weak isentropic ascent lifts
through the region. Highs today are expected to reach the low to
mid 60s across the area.

Better precip chances arrive tonight as strong low level
moisture return moves northward with a rapidly strengthening low
level jet and surface cyclone. This warrants cat pops for much
of the overnight, with an initial surge of precip on the nose
of the jet/moisture return this evening, followed by more
widespread shower activity after midnight into the morning
hours. Lows will only drop into the low/mid 50s early in the
overnight before rising ahead of the attendant cold front into
the morning hours.

The most active period of weather is expected around daybreak
Monday morning through the afternoon. As the surface low works
northeast across the area, scattered convection is anticipated
in the warm sector ahead of the cold front, mainly from Marion
northeast to northwest PA. With SBCAPE values of 500-1000 j/kg
and deep layer shear of 50-60 kts, a brief severe threat exists
with very fast moving showers/storms across the southeast part
of the area. It won't take much to tap into 70+ kt winds 5-10kft
above the surface to bring damaging wind gusts. The other
concern is post front from mid morning onward as strong gradient
winds/gusts expected through the afternoon. Have continued the
High Wind Watch for this forecast issuance, with gusts up to 60
mph possible. The main forecast decision for today will be
assessing the area/timing of a potential High Wind Warning vs.
Wind Advisory. The strongest wind gusts appear to be from 10 AM
through 4 PM Monday, with gusts/winds subsiding after 5 PM.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
All will be calming down Monday evening with gusty winds continuing
near the east lakeshore. May have a few lake enhanced showers while
moisture remains Monday night and have a slight chance mentioned.
The pattern for the remainder of the week is a cool one with a
number of smaller disturbances moving through the flow of the
longwave trough taking up much of the CONUS. Surface high pressure
will build across the lower Ohio Valley from the central Plains, but
a minor wave aloft is painting light QPF that may brush the
southeastern counties Tuesday night. A somewhat more defined feature
is the passage of a trough Wednesday/Wednesday night that may bring
scattered showers to the area (mix with wet snow at night).
Temperatures through this stretch will be 40s for highs and around
30 for lows.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Will keep Thursday dry with high pressure, but then for Friday a
weak low is expected to cross the Ohio Valley. More or less the
primary models show this feature to some degree. Saturday is quieter

.AVIATION /12Z Sunday THROUGH Thursday/...
Mainly VFR conditions expected through the first half of the
period, with worsening conditions after 00Z across the region.
A wave of showers will lift north across the region after 18Z,
resulting in some brief MVFR conditions. More widespread -SHRA
and deteriorating ceilings expected after 00Z, with widespread
MVFR and some IFR possible through the end of the period. Winds
will be southerly today, with gusts increasing after 00Z as
stronger winds approach. LLWS will be possible after 06Z as a
strong low level jet moves northeast through the region.

.OUTLOOK...Non-VFR likely Monday with showers and possible
thunderstorms. LLWS possible through Monday. Wind gusts
possibly exceeding 50 knots at times Monday. Non-VFR possible
again on Wednesday with rain showers and Wednesday night with
snow showers.

.MARINE...
The Gale Watch remains up for Monday. Forecast remains on track for
40 knot west-southwest gales. This will result in water levels below
the critical mark on the western basin and on the other end of the
lake the potential for lakeshore flooding/erosion with high levels.

South-southeast winds today will increase tonight before a sharp and
strong cold front sweeps across the lake. Gales will ramp up quickly
with the passage of the front and persist into the evening. Cannot
rule out a brief window of lakeshore flooding on the western basin
as the water returns but confidence is low in timing and extent at
this time.  As the influence of the low weakens and high pressure
builds across the Ohio Valley, winds will continue to diminish
through Tuesday. A Small Craft Advisory will likely follow the Gales
and run through Tuesday evening. Winds back briefly Wednesday as a
trough crossing the lakes approaches with west-northwest winds in
its wake Wednesday night. Winds return to westerly for Thursday as
high pressure builds across the Ohio Valley.
