A strong low tracks from southern Ontario into southern Quebec
today into tonight. The low then lifts northeast through Quebec
Friday night sending a cold front across the region. The front
will move into the Canadian Maritimes Saturday, exiting the
Maritimes Sunday morning. Low pressure will approach from the
west on Monday.

Adjustments made to the hrly temps to match the latest obs. Some
light returns moving across far northern Aroostook County
this morning. Received reports of some light snowfall overnight
w/just a dusting reported across the St. John Valley and
Allagash region. Rest of the forecast looks ok attm.

Things are developing slower than what the earlier trends were
showing the last 24 hrs. High pres to the e holding strong
keeping rain at bay. The timing of the rainfall looks like it

northern areas such as the St. John Valley and Allagash region
could hold onto cooler temps longer this morning. There could be
some spotty freezing drizzle this morning across the far n and
w as temps could struggle for a while getting out of the lower
30s before the warming kicks in. There could be a light glaze in
some spot, but not expecting anything significant. The high to
the e will shift further to the e w/a SSE flow setting up
allowing that warmer air to stream n along w/deeper moisture.
Low pres will lift across central NYS tonight and then into
western Quebec on Christmas morning. The occluded front out
ahead of this low will lift into the New England region w/rain
moving from sw to ne later tonight into Christmas Day. The
heavier rainfall is expected to move into the region on
Christmas day starting in the swrn areas, such as the
Piscataquis Valley region, during the morning and then spread
further ene during the day. The rainfall is expected to be heavy
at times and w/rapid snowmelt and some ice in the rivers and
streams, this could lead to some significant rises on streams
and rivers. Rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected across
the region w/this event. A Flood Watch is in place for the
Piscataquis and Penobscot River Valley for Christmas Day into
Saturday. WPC has this region in a Moderate Risk for flooding.
Plus 2+ inches of rain is expected in the areas as well. An
additional item to consider is the potential for some tstms
along the coast, which will enhance the rainfall. The GFS and
NAM soundings do show elevated instability and nose of WAA
pushing into that area by Christmas afternoon. Decided to add
the mention of tstms for the coast. WPC has this region,
including the interior Downeast region. More on this in the
Hydrology section below.

The next item to address is the strong wind potential. A High
Wind Watch remains in place for the entire region. As stated by
the daycrew, a strong llvl jet moves into the region ahead of
the occluded front on Christmas Day w/the potential for up to 70
mph wind gusts across the Downeast especially the coast, and
50-60 mph elsewhere. Confidence is building that areas such as
the Piscataquis and Penobscot and Downeast could be dealing
with numerous power outages and downed trees. The question
remains is if the strong winds aloft will be able to mix down to
the sfc across the Northern Maine region especially n of
Millinocket and Houlton. The ECMWF and NAM keep the strongest
winds s of the Millinocket and Houlton region, while the GFS is
a bit further n w/the stronger winds. The local Climatology
study showed that an event w/characteristics similar to this
setup at this time of year could favor areas from Houlton-
Millinocket southward to be in the corridor of the strongest
winds. The latest sounding data showed some crossing of the
winds w/the strongest winds remaining above the sfc further n.
Will take a look at things further this morning to see if an
update is in order.

The other item is the record warmth heading our way for
Christmas Day. Many sites have potential for record high temps
as the warm moist plume gets pulled n from the Caribbean.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A cold front will cross the FA Fri night. Rain will continue into
the night, and will end across the western zones perhaps as a
quick change to snow after midnight. Most of the rain should
clear the eastern Maine/NB border by 12Z Saturday. As cold air
filters in Saturday morning there could be a period of snow/snow
showers that hang on for a while along or near the eastern
Aroostook/western NB border. The strong low level jet shifts
east of the area during the evening, so at this point the ending
time for the high wind headlines looks quite reasonable.

In the wake of the cold front Saturday, there is still some
uncertainty as to whether a trough across western New England at 12Z
Saturday morning produced a period of light snow or snow showers
Saturday afternoon as it moves across the Gulf of Maine. High
temperatures will occur first thing in the morning around midnight
with slowly falling temperatures during the day, but still even by
late in the day the air will not be all that bitter with
temperatures still above average for late December.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Colder air filters into the area Sat night and will likely be
accompanied by clouds and a few snow showers across northern
areas. Sunday will likely see the clouds briefly break up ahead
of the next incoming system. Temperatures will be seasonable
with highs in the low to mid 20s north to around the freezing
mark in Bangor.

The next low approaches from the west Sunday night with increasing
clouds and a return flow out of the south that will keep
temperatures from getting all that cold. Probably a night where
the low occurs between midnight and 3 am with temps slowly
rising toward daybreak.

On Monday, low pressure tracks from the Great Lakes and into central
Quebec with overrunning precipitation to break out across the area.
Downeast, it looks like any snow will change to rain fairly quickly.
Across the north, there could be a few inches of snow; but there
could very well be enough of a push of milder air to cause the snow
to change to rain late in the afternoon. Did bump up the PoPs just a
bit, and suspect that they will likely need to be increased further
on subsequent shifts. The QPF does not look anything like our
Christmas Day system, so a worst case scenario at this time would be
some very low end advisories in the north; but even that is
questionable at this time.

A stronger push of modified arctic air follows for Monday night and
Tuesday as a cold upper low passes over the region Tuesday.  As is
usually the case in these situations, there will likely be some snow
showers and perhaps a squall with the cold front with temperatures
falling during the day Tuesday. Did not make any major changes at
this time, but there is the potential that hourly temperatures will
need to be lowered some more across the north during the day
Tuesday.  Wednesday looks mainly dry and cold as high pressure
builds into the region, ahead of perhaps another system beyond the
forecast period at the end of next week.

.AVIATION /12Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
NEAR TERM: VFR early today w/some MVFR w/drizzle and even some
spotty freezing drizzle at some of the northern terminals this
morning. Expecting cigs to lower to IFR and perhaps LIFR by the
afternoon and continue into tonight right through Christmas Day.
There is potential for some heavy rainfall on Christmas Day.
Very strong winds w/SSE winds 10-20 mph today increasing to
25-35 mph later tonight into Christmas Day. Gust potential is
there for 50-60 mph w/KBHB possibly seeing gusts higher than 60
mph. LLWS a definite today right into Christmas Day.

SHORT TERM:
Fri night: IFR in rain Fri evening with LLWS to end from west to
east. Conditions will likely improve to MVFR overnight at KBGR
and KBHB, but IFR may linger in rain at the northern terminals.

Sat: Predominately MVFR.

.MARINE...
NEAR TERM: The Storm Watch remains in place for strong winds of
55 kt on Christmas Day. SSE winds will pick up today at 15-25
kt w/gusts to 30 kts, especially over the outer waters. The
winds will continue to increase tonight right into Christmas
Day. Sustained winds on Christmas Day will be 35-45 kt, w/the
strongest winds over the outer waters. Seas of 3-5 ft today
building to 6-8 ft tonight. Seas will continue to build on
Christmas Day reaching 15-18 ft especially away from the intra-
coastal zone.

SHORT TERM: Storm force wind is possible into early Friday
evening. Small craft advisory conditions will continue into
Saturday night and perhaps into Sunday, mainly for seas. There
will likely be a break by Sunday night, but increasing return
flow will likely necessitate another round of small craft
advisories Monday.

.HYDROLOGY...
The combination of rain, very warm temps and rapid snowmelt will
lead to significant river and stream rises. A total rainfall of
2+ inches is expected across portions of central and downeast
areas. The Piscataquis River and Penobscot River basins could
be seeing rainfall amounts up to 2.50 inches, and possibly
higher. This heavy rainfall combined w/snowmelt and any melting
ice in the Piscataquis River, Pleasant River and Kingsbury
Stream could lead to rises to AOA bankfull. 6 inches of snow
remains in parts of the Piscataquis basin. The Piscataquis
River has a low river bend and tends to react quickly to heavy
rainfall, there is high concern that the river at Dover-Foxcroft
could reach at least minor flood stage. The Penobscot River
basin has potential for significant rises. There is some ice on
the northern branch of the Penobscot River at Grindstone, but
most of this is frazil ice and not very thick. But there is some
snowpack around 6 inches or so, which will be released along
w/the heavy rainfall. The Penobscot River tends to take some
time to react to the runoff given its deeper bed. WPC has the
Piscataquis Basin and a portion of the Penobscot Basin in a
Moderate risk for flooding. Therefore, the Penobscot Basin was
added to the existing Flood Watch. Interestingly enough, WPC has
the Maine Central Highlands and Downeast region in a Slight
Risk for flooding due the heavy rainfall expected. Confidence
was not high enough attm to expand the Watch further n and e
given that the latest guidance shifted the axis further e and se
and lowered rainfall amounts some. Still some time to assess
things.

Taking a look across the northern Maine rivers, some ice is on
the rivers, with much of the ice remaining as slush and frazil
ice. The chunked up ice on the St. John River from Madawaska to
the town of Lille remains but, but water had formed on top of
the ice and the there was open water running through the chunked
ice. All the gages across the St. John and Aroostook Basins are
showing stages well below flood stage and plenty of room for
some rises.  Ice hung up on the Allagash River at Allagash
still looks like it is there, but the latest trends have shown a
decrease in the stage down to 7.5 ft and dropping. This ice
could be hung up right at the bridge. The ice across the
northern rivers could start to break up and move as temps warm
this afternoon. The ice should be gone by later tonight and
definitely by Christmas Day w/the warmup, wind and rain. Given less
rainfall expected w/less than an inch, not expecting any
significant flooding.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
There is a risk of some minor overwash at the time of high
tide, especially on Christmas morning. High tide occurs between
6:30 and 7:30 am and with waves 10-11 feet along the coast.
Minor overwash may occur around the time of high tide on
Christmas morning but confidence is low for significant
flooding.
