.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure off the east coast gives way to a deepening storm
system over the Deep South. The system will move to West Virginia by
daybreak Monday before tracking across the Finger Lakes to the
Adirondacks by Monday evening. It will spread a soaking rain of up
to an inch across our region in the process. This will be followed
by potentially significant snows across parts of the Southern Tier
Tuesday into Wednesday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Quiet across New York with just increasing cirrus. Temps have fallen
as low as the lower 30s especially east of Lake Ontario with mainly
mid 30s to mid 40s elsewhere. Temps will rise at least a few degrees
late as low pressure deepening over the deep south moves to West
Virginia by daybreak. As that occurs, rain currently lifting across
Tennessee and Ohio Valleys will arrive over Southern Tier right
around daybreak and quickly turn to a steady rain.

Widespread steady rain spreads across entire region Monday as low
continues deepening to less than 995mb as it tracks across Finger
Lakes and Adirondacks. Rainfall should generally range from three
quarters to an inch, but pockets of rainfall over an inch are
likely. 18z and available 00z guidance still in line with this
thinking. Could see moderate rain taper to ligher rain or drizzle in
the afternoon as mid-level dry slot works south to north across the
region. Tight pressure gradient to west of the deepening sfc low
will also lead to breezy north to northeast winds in the afternoon
especially western NY. Those northeast winds off a cooler and moist
Lake Ontario in this regime of low-level moisture has prompted the
addition of fog over western NY in the afternoon, only further
adding to the raw and damp day as temperatures only rise to the mid
40s west to upper 40s/near 50 southeast and east of Lake Ontario.

Cold air will wrap in behind the storm Monday night...which is
expected to be nearly stationary in the vcnty of the Adirondacks by
that time. Wrap around synoptic moisture and the onset of lake
enhancement will set the stage for potentially significant
accumulations of wet snow across parts of the Southern Tier...
especially on and just east of the Chautauqua ridge. This lake
enhancement looks to kick in as early as the overnight hours on
Monday night.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The surface low causing the steady rain Monday will linger overhead
of the state of New York Tuesday before it slowly weakens and
meanders northward into southern Canada Wednesday. While this
occurs, cold air on the back side of the low will continue to filter
into the region from the west Tuesday and Tuesday night, deepening
the cold air mass. By Tuesday night, the majority of the region will
be seeing some flakes due to the deeper cold air mass overhead.
Additionally, this air mass will also produce a lake response east
and northeast of the lakes Tuesday night through Wednesday,
producing moderate amounts across the western Southern Tier. Places
across the Chautauqua Ridge could see a foot or more of wet snow
from Tuesday morning to Wednesday morning. Otherwise, for the
areas east of Lake Ontario an inch or two will be possible.

Upper level ridging over the Ohio Valley will produce surface high
pressure over the lower Ohio Valley/Mid-Atlantic Wednesday night and
Thursday. The northern periphery of the surface high pressure and
its associated drier air mass will lie across the region during this
time, shutting off any lingering showers Wednesday night with dry
conditions Thursday.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A cut off upper level low over the Oklahoma Panhandle Thursday will
get picked up by a shortwave trough rounding the northern-stream
longwave trough. These two upper level features will produce two
lows at the surface which will produce the weather for Friday and the
weekend.

The aforementioned shortwave will produce surface low which will
push east across Canada and drag its associated frontal feature
across the region Friday producing chances for showers.

As the upper level low interacts with the shortwave, a surface low
will deepen and push northeast up along the Eastern Seaboard
Saturday and Sunday, which again will produce chances for showers.

Some disagreement still with placement of the sfc low that develops
over the SE U.S. late Saturday into early Sunday, and its track, so
kept chance POPs for now.

Temperatures for the long term period will be near normal.

.AVIATION /03Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
VFR weather through early Monday morning with thickening cirrus
shield. Conditions will then deteriorate by daybreak Monday as cigs
lower to MVFR across the Southern Tier. These lower cigs will be
accompanied by the onset of steady rain.

Cigs, and even in some areas vsby, will lower to IFR/LIFR levels
across the entire region into Monday afternoon as a storm system
advancing north from West Virginia spreads steady rain across all
the TAF sites. In addition to the rain, fog is likely over western
NY in the afternoon.

Monday night...IFR/MVFR. Rain and snow showers.
Tuesday...VFR/MVFR with rain and snow.
Wednesday...VFR/MVFR with the chance for rain and snow showers.
Thursday...Mainly VFR.
Friday...VFR to MVFR with scattered rain and snow showers.

Rapidly intensifying low pressure over the deep south will bring
about strengthening northeast and northerly winds by midday Monday
into Monday evening. Small craft advisories have been issued for all
areas except the St. Lawrence River. After a break late Monday night
into Tuesday, another round of small craft conditions will develop
later Tuesday through Thursday.
