.SYNOPSIS...
A strong area of low pressure will pass to the north and west of the
region Sunday, with the trailing cold front crossing the area in the
afternoon. This will bring a few periods of showers, along with
strong damaging winds to much of the region Sunday and Sunday night.
Colder air will move back into the region behind this system, with
lake effect rain and snow at times east and southeast of the lakes
Sunday night through Tuesday night.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
...DAMAGING WINDS EXPECTED SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT...

Our attention now turns to a strong system moving through the Great
Lakes region, with strong winds being the primary forecast concern.
A very deep yet progressive mid level trough will move from the
Plains this evening to the Great Lakes Sunday, taking on a negative
tilt with time. The associated surface low will reach eastern Lake
Superior Sunday morning, then move south and southeast of James Bay
through Sunday night while deepening to around 980MB. The trailing
cold front will enter Western NY around midday Sunday, then surge
east to the eastern Lake Ontario region by late afternoon.

WINDS...

A very strong 75 knot low level jet will propagate across the Lower
Great Lakes Sunday morning in the warm sector of the maturing
system. Warm advection and a shallow inversion will prevent the
brunt of this low level jet from mixing down in most areas.
Nonetheless...it will become quite windy areawide, with gusts of 40+
mph common in many areas. The stable layer near the ridge tops and
low level jet component perpendicular to terrain will support
stronger downslope wind gusts to the lee of the Chautauqua Ridge
along the Lake Erie shore, with a few gusts to near 60 mph possible
Sunday morning. Downslope winds are also possible late morning
through mid afternoon on the northern slopes of the Tug Hill, with
terrain channeling also possible in the Black River valley. Gusts
may also approach 60 mph here.

Following the cold front, the wind event will transition into a more
traditional high wind event with the strongest winds focusing
northeast of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Model guidance continues to
support a tropopause fold and stratospheric PV intrusion as the base
of the trough crosses the eastern Great Lakes, with the 1.5 PVU
surface decending to around 550 MB. This, combined with strong cold
advection and post-frontal pressure rises will support a period of
strong subsidence and steep lapse rates through the low/mid levels.
The magnitude of post-frontal winds aloft suggest gusts of 65 mph
northeast of Lake Erie from Buffalo to Rochester. A few 70 mph gusts
are possible close to Lake Erie. Gusts across Jefferson County will
likely be closer to 60 mph. Farther inland, expect gusts of around
50 mph from the interior Southern Tier through the Finger Lakes.

PRECIPITATION...

A wing of warm advection will race northeast across the Lower Great
Lakes very late tonight and early Sunday morning. This will
produce an area of light showers which will only last an hour or
two as it moves across the area early Sunday morning. This will
be followed by a dry slot during mid to late Sunday morning. Strong
DPVA and moisture transport ahead of the mid level trough will
combine with convergence along the cold front to produce one or
several bands of showers, entering Western NY by late morning
and then spreading quickly east across the remainder of the
area. There may be a few brief downpours, but the fast motion of
the rain will limit rain amounts to 0.25"-0.5" in most areas. A
few locations east of Lake Ontario may exceed 0.50".

In the wake of the system lake effect rain will develop northeast of
Lake Erie by mid to late afternoon Sunday. This band of rain will
initially be over the Buffalo Northtowns, then drift slowly south to
the Southtowns later Sunday evening before reaching the western
Southern Tier late Sunday night as boundary layer flow veers more
westerly. The rain will mix with snow overnight across the higher
terrain, with very minor accumulations possible on the hills. East
of Lake Ontario lake effect rain will setup Sunday evening near
Watertown, then drift south to the Tug Hill by late Sunday night.
There may be a few inches of accumulation at the highest spots on
the Tug Hill overnight.

CONVECTION...

Latest high resolution CAMS guidance continues to suggest the
potential for a convective fine line along the strongly forced cold
front. Instability will be extremely limited, but the strongly
forced environment may nonetheless support a narrow band of
convective showers. Given the very strong wind fields aloft, if this
band materializes it may produce damaging wind gusts (with or
without thunder).

TEMPERATURES...

Temperatures will rise overnight as southerly winds and warm
advection increase. Temperatures will peak Sunday morning to
early afternoon in the low to mid 50s just ahead of the front,
then fall back into the 40s late.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
A large scale trough will remain in place over the eastern third of
the U.S. and Canada during this period. This will allow for
continued active weather during the early part of the new work week.
Behind the passing cold front on Sunday, cold air at the 850H level
will remain fairly steady on Monday into Monday night, warming just
a few degrees from around -8C Monday morning to around -5C late
Monday night ahead of the next cold front to cross the region early
Tuesday.

With the cooler air aloft, a lake response behind the passing cold
front is expected east of the lakes, but at the same time, synoptic
moisture will also decrease through the day on Monday into Monday
night. Lake effect that will be in place on Monday morning shouldn't
move too much as winds will remain fairly steady out of the west to
west-southwest. The greatest amounts of overall precipitation will
be east of Lake Ontario, where lingering synoptic moisture and some
slightly cooler 850H temps will be in place, along with the more
favorable fetch across the lake compared to that of Lake Erie. Delta
T's will be around 17C, which will favor the lake effect, but sfc
temperatures during the day on Monday look to only be cold enough
over the higher terrain for snow. Areas across the Western Southern
Tier can expect up to around an inch of snow on Monday for the
higher elevations...while areas across the Tug Hill can expect 1 to
3 inches. Winds on Monday will still remain elevated as a pressure
gradient remains over the area, causing winds to gust to around 35
MPH through the day. Highs on Monday will be in the low to mid 40s,
with the higher terrain in the upper 30s. Areas of the Tug Hill, can
expect highs in the mid 30s.

Monday night, lake snows will briefly weaken early, but a shortwave
trough dropping out of the Upper Midwest and passing cold front will
cross the area late in the evening into the early overnight. Some
model guidance disagreement with the timing of the frontal passage
still exists with this guidance run. As the cold front passes cold
air advection will once again increase, bringing 850H temps down to
-8C by Tuesday morning. The passing shortwave will also aid in the
re-development in lake effect. Snowfall on Monday night into Tuesday
morning may reach around 2 to 5 inches east of Lake Ontario over the
Tug Hill. Portions of the Western Southern Tier can expect around 1
to 3 inches. Low temperatures on Monday night will be in the upper
20s to low 30s for the higher terrain and in the low to mid 30s for
the lower elevations.

Another more potent shortwave trough will drop south out of Ontario
on Tuesday afternoon, reinforcing some of the lake effect. The
shortwave trough will also cause a wind shift through the day on
Tuesday from a westerly to northwesterly wind. This will result in
movement of any lake bands from east of the lakes to southeast of
the lakes through the day. Temperatures on Tuesday will be in the
low to mid 30s for the higher terrain, and in the upper 30s to
around 40 for the lower elevations. Lake snows on Tuesday should be
limited to around an inch for the Western Southern Tier and
east/southeast of Lake Ontario. This will be because the Lake
Ontario band shifting south will be located over lower elevations
with slightly warmer temperatures, resulting in more rain showers
than snow.

Tuesday night, 850H temps will reach their coolest point through the
night into Wednesday morning when temps will drop to around -12C
over WNY and to around -15C over the North Country. A lake response
off of both lakes is expected to continue, and with decreasing
synoptic moisture and cold temperatures, snow that does fall will be
light and fluffy with higher ratios. Temperatures on Tuesday night
will be in the mid 20s south of Lake Ontario where lake snows and
clouds will be in place. East of Lake Ontario, temperatures will be
in the low to mid teens with less cloud cover expected and more of
the winds flowing out of Canada rather than over Lake Ontario.
Snowfall on Tuesday night will be fairly widespread early on as the
northwest winds causes less organized multi snowbands, along with
some general rain/snow showers that linger from the earlier passing
shortwave trough.

&&

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Lake effect snow showers will come to an end southeast of the Lakes
Wednesday. High pressure will move across the eastern Great Lakes
Wednesday and dry conditions will continue through Thursday. A
chilly airmass will be in place Wednesday-Wednesday night with highs
in the upper 30s to mid 30s and lows in the teens to 20s.

A warm-up is expected Thursday and Friday with high temperatures
reaching the 50s across the region. Forecast consensus has high
pressure moving south and east of the region Friday. A shortwave
trough will flatten out as it tracks from the Central Plains to the
Great Lakes. A weak cold front may move across the region Friday-
Saturday with rain showers possible.

&&

.AVIATION /06Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
An area of light showers will move through with a warm front
between 07Z and 13Z. The LLJ causing the showers will be of more
impact, resulting in LLWS, with the showers too light to cause
any visibility restrictions.

Strong low pressure will then pass to our north and west. Expect
the area to briefly be in a dry slot mid to late Sunday
morning, with gusty southerly winds during this time. Showers
will move in this afternoon with the cold/occluded front
trailing this system. The heavier showers may produce MVFR. It
will become very windy Sunday, with gusts of 35-40 knots common
across much of the region, and exceeding 50 knots in the
afternoon and evening northeast of Lakes Erie and Ontario
including KBUF, KIAG, KROC, and KART.

Outlook...

Monday...Showers with areas of MVFR, especially east of the lakes.
Wet snow will mix in across higher terrain with local IFR.
Tuesday...Lake effect rain and snow southeast of the lakes with
local MVFR/IFR.
Wednesday...Lingering lake effect snow to the southeast of the
Lakes with local MVFR/IFR, ending in the afternoon.
Thursday...VFR.

.MARINE...
Strong low pressure will track from near eastern Lake Superior
Sunday morning to south and east of James Bay Sunday night,
bottoming out around 980 MB. A trailing cold front will cross the
eastern Great Lakes Sunday afternoon. South winds will increase late
tonight and Sunday morning ahead of the system, reaching 30 knots on
Lake Erie and the northeast end of Ontario.

The strongest winds will develop following the cold front, with high
end 45 knot gales for several hours just behind the front Sunday
afternoon on Lake Erie, and Sunday evening on Lake Ontario. Gusts
will reach well into the Storm Force category. Lower end gales may
continue into Monday before winds start to gradually subside later
Monday and Monday night.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A Lakeshore Flood Warning is in effect for the east end of both
lakes. Model guidance has trended stronger with sustained winds
to 45 knots on Lake Erie and to 40 knots on Lake Ontario. This
provided confidence for the upgrade, with levels on Lake Erie
expected to reach 9 to 10 feet above low water datum at Buffalo.
This level requires the addition of Niagara County into the
warning for the Upper Niagara River, with flooding possible
along the shores of Grand Island and Cayuga Island.

Wave action will build on Lake Ontario following the passage of
this front, with lakeshore flooding and erosion late Sunday
through Monday afternoon at the east end of the lake.
