.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure departing eastward off the New England coast will
provide dry weather through this evening. A cold front will
cross the region Thursday morning with a few scattered light
showers. It will turn sharply cooler behind this front, with
well below normal temperatures Friday through the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure will continue to provide dry weather through this
evening. There will not be much cloud cover, but the latest
experimental HRRR vertically integrated smoke forecast suggests
there will be plenty of smoke in the upper levels from the western
US wildfires. SSW winds will gust 30-35 mph across the northwest
Niagara Frontier and Jefferson County late this afternoon.

Dry weather will continue through the first half of tonight. Late
tonight and Thursday morning a cold front will cross the eastern
Great Lakes from northwest to southeast. The front is moisture
starved, and the stronger forcing is displaced well north of our
region across northern Quebec. The trailing cold front, orphaned
from stronger large scale forcing, will only be able to produce an
increase in cloud cover and a few scattered light showers. The
best chance for any measurable rain is across the North Country
for a few hours Thursday morning. Mesoscale guidance also shows
upsloping may enhance showers/drizzle south of Lake Ontario
Thursday morning. In each case, rainfall amounts would be very
light.

Cold advection and post-frontal cloud cover will result in much
cooler temperatures Thursday, with highs in the low to mid 60s
in most areas. The digging mid level trough in the wake of this
cold front will change upstream wind trajectories and likely
remove the upper level smoke from our region by Friday.

High pressure across the upper Great Lakes will provide fair
weather while maintaining cold air advection in a northeasterly
flow. It will be a cool night with low temperatures ranging from
the mid 30s to mid 40s. Persistent surface wind will limit
frost potential, but patchy frost or freezing temperatures can't
be ruled out across the North Country where skies will clear
out more quickly.

&&

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
A broad area of high pressure centered over the upper Great Lakes
Friday will sink southeast and center itself over Lake Ontario by
Saturday. The presence of the high will promote a prolonged period
of quiet weather. However, with the region being under the eastern
periphery of the high pressure on Friday, some lake induced clouds
south of the lakes will be possible as northerly winds will bring in
cooler temperatures (around 0C at 850mb).

As alluded to previously, temperatures will be on the chilly side
Friday and Saturday as temperatures cool off and level out to 0C.
These chillier temperatures aloft combined with the little cloud
cover overhead due to the high pressure will promote the formation
of frost Friday and Saturday nights along the Southern Tier and
North Country. Lows both of these nights will range in the 30s with
some locations along the lake shore in the low to mid 40s.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Vast area of high pressure will center over New England Sunday
through Tuesday, before elongating southwestward back across the
region Wednesday. That said, the prolonged period of dry weather
will continue throughout the long term portion of the forecast.
Additionally with the high now to the east of the region
temperatures will be on the rise. By the middle of next week,
daytime highs will have warmed up to the low 70s.

.AVIATION /22Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
VFR will prevail through this evening with milky sky due to smoke
from western US wildfires rather than cloud cover. A cold front will
cross the region from northwest to southeast late tonight through
Thursday morning. This front is moisture starved and lacking upper
level support, so expect nothing more than a few scattered light
showers with the best chance of rain across the North Country. A
period of MVFR CIGS is likely late tonight into Thursday morning.
Areas of IFR and patchy fog are a possible across the Southern Tier
including the KJHW terminal.

Outlook...

Thursday afternoon...improving to VFR later during the
afternoon.

Thursday night...VFR.

Friday through Monday...VFR, except local IFR in river valley
fog across the Southern Tier each late night and early morning.

.MARINE...
High pressure will continue to drift off the east coast, allowing
for a tight pressure gradient to linger as a cold front approaches.
This will continue to support SSW winds in the 15 knot range on
Lakes Erie and Ontario.

A cold front will cross the eastern Great Lakes Thursday morning.
Northerly winds will increase behind the cold front, and will
likely produce a brief period of Small Craft Advisory conditions
along the south shores of Lakes Erie and Ontario. Following a
brief lull, winds will pick up slightly Thursday night with good
mixing due to the relatively cool air aloft compared to the lake
water temperature.
