.SYNOPSIS...
It will be hot and humid today with apparent temperatures in the mid
to upper 90s at many locations this afternoon. The rest of today
will be mainly dry across Western NY, with a few showers and
thunderstorms east of Lake Ontario. More widespread showers and
thunderstorms will move into the area later tonight. Some storms may
produce strong gusty winds. A slow moving cold front will push
through tonight and provide us with notably cooler air and lower
humidity levels for the latter portion of the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A broken line of showers and isolated thunderstorms continues to
race quickly east this morning. Through midday the most widespread
convection will be over the northeast end of Lake Ontario and
Jefferson County, with widely scattered showers farther south into
the western Finger Lakes and points southeast of Lake Ontario.
Showers near Rochester and the Genesee Valley will exit by late
morning. Meanwhile sunshine has quickly developed across Western NY,
with clearing progressing east into the Genesee Valley and western
Finger Lakes by midday. The trough axis supporting the showers and
storms will slow down this afternoon, and may provide a focus for
more vigorous convection during the mid to late afternoon across
Central NY and east of Lake Ontario.

Precipitable water values will increase to around 2 inches, so
there's a potential for these storms to produce brief heavy
downpours. Winds shear will increase later this afternoon, so there
also is a small risk that a few of theses storms east of Lake
Ontario will be strong to severe during the mid afternoon to early
evening.

The rest of the area from the Genesee Valley westward will likely
remain dry this afternoon with +20C air at 850MB providing a stout
cap to surface based parcels despite the growing heat and humidity.

Otherwise, the main weather story for today will hot and humid
conditions across the entire region. The combination of
temperatures soaring into the low 90s and dewpoints around 70F
will support a heat index in the mid to upper 90s from the
Niagara Frontier east across the Genesee Valley to the western
Finger Lakes and Central NY. A Heat Advisory remains in effect
for these areas. Elsewhere, highs will reach the upper 80s for the
Southern Tier mid to upper 80s for the North Country, with a heat
index in the lower 90s.

The cold front will surge eastward out of the Ohio Valley and into
the eastern Great Lakes tonight. The timing is quite late,
probably not arriving in far Western NY until after 03Z, then
reaching the eastern Lake Ontario region towards 09Z. Even with
the late timing, a warm and very humid airmass will still
support some surface based instability overnight with showers
and scattered thunderstorms along and ahead of the advancing
cold front. The best severe weather risk will likely be west of
our area across the Ohio Valley where frontal timing is more
favorably aligned with the diurnal cycle. Storms will likely be
in a weakening phase by the time they reach us, but these may
still be strong enough to produce severe weather overnight. The
main threat is strong gusty winds, but large hail cannot be
ruled out if any supercells hold together long enough.

It will turn quite windy late tonight in the wake of the cold
front across the Niagara Frontier, with wind gusts approaching
45 mph northeast of Lake Erie.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Broad upper level trough on Thursday with sharper trough axis diving
south through the Great Lakes on Friday, delivering a good shot of
much cooler air.

Surface cold front exiting the area Thursday morning with showers
and perhaps a thunderstorm lingering through the morning across
eastern portions of the region. Thursday will become a windy day as
40+ knots of wind aloft will be able to be tapped as mixed layer
builds. Likely looking at wind gusts of 35-45 mph. Post-frontal cold
advection keeping temperatures in the mid to upper 70s.

A reinforcing cold front coming through Friday looks moisture
starved, but would not rule out a few showers. Cooler air will
continue to funnel into the region with highs only in the upper 60s
to lower 70s.

The upper level trough will settle across the eastern Great Lakes
for the weekend and start of the next week, resulting in below
normal temperatures through Sunday. There may be a few showers due
shortwaves embedded in the cyclonic flow aloft, but the majority of
the time will be dry. Highs will start off cool with mid to upper
60s for the weekend. The start of the next work week will be dry and
warmer with a mid level ridge building back into the region.

.AVIATION /14Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A broken line of showers and isolated thunderstorms is racing east
this morning, and will focus mainly across the eastern Lake Ontario
region for this afternoon. Any heavier showers and storms will
contain brief/local MVFR to IFR conditions, with VFR prevailing
between showers. Otherwise the rest of the area will be mainly dry
this afternoon with VFR prevailing.

A line of strong thunderstorms is expected to develop to our
west this evening. This line will be weakening as it approaches
the area late this evening, but still has the potential to
produce a brief period with strong gusty winds at
KBUF/KIAG/KJHW after 03Z. The line will move quickly eastward
and out of the region by 09Z following the progression of a cold
front. This front will be followed by gusty southwesterly winds.

Outlook...

Thursday...Mainly VFR with showers and scattered thunderstorms
ending in the morning.
Friday...Mainly VFR with a chance of afternoon showers.
Saturday...VFR/MVFR with a chance of showers.
Sunday...VFR.

.MARINE...
There will generally be a southerly flow today, but wind
direction will vary by location...especially along the south
shores of Lake Ontario where a weak lake breeze may briefly
develop due to the large temperature differences.

A cold front will push across the region late tonight. There may
be some strong thunderstorms with gusty winds ahead of this
front. Then southwest winds will freshen ahead and immediately
behind the front. Small craft advisory conditions are likely to
be met on Lake Erie and possibly in the BUF Harbor/Upper IAG
River by Thursday morning.

SCA conditions will likely persist on Lake Erie on Thursday...and
could possibly include the far east end of Lake Ontario as well.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
The combination of high lake levels an expected increase in
winds on Lake Erie may cause minor lakeshore flooding along Lake
Erie late tonight or Thursday morning. This depends on how
strong winds on Lake Erie are, but levels of 6 to 7 feet are
possible at the Buffalo gauge.

.CLIMATE...
A hot and sultry airmass will reach our region today. This heat
will approach daily records for our three climate sites. Below

...A STRONG THUNDERSTORM WILL AFFECT EAST CENTRAL OSWEGO COUNTY...

At 1036 AM EDT, a strong thunderstorm was located 8 miles northeast
of Central Square, or 16 miles west of Camden, moving northeast at 30
mph.

Winds in excess of 40 mph and half inch hail are possible with this
storm, along with frequent lightning.

Locations impacted include...
Redfield, Hastings, Williamstown, Parish, Altmar, Kasoag, Amboy,
Mallory and Redfield Reservoir.

This includes Interstate 81 between exits 33 and 34.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.
Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe
shelter inside a building or vehicle. If you are boating on Redfield
Reservoir seek safe harbor until the storm passes.

At 1103 AM EDT, a strong thunderstorm was located over Redfield, or
12 miles north of Camden, moving northeast at 30 mph.

Winds in excess of 40 mph and penny size hail are possible with this
storm along with brief, torrential downpours.

Locations impacted include...
Whetstone Gulf State Park, Highmarket, Martinsburg, Port Leyden,
