.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front will push north across the region and generate
some light rain late tonight and into Wednesday morning.
Western New York will briefly find itself in the warm sector,
with warm and breezy weather for most of the day Wednesday. Low
pressure will then stall across the central and eastern Great
Lakes which will establish an unsettled pattern with periods of
rain Wednesday night through Friday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A high pressure ridge will extend across Quebec and into our
region this afternoon. Radar shows that most of the showers
which developed this morning have ended, which will leave our
region dry through this evening outside of perhaps a stray
sprinkle. It will be warmer today than the cool pattern the
region has experienced over the past couple weeks, with
temperatures in the mid 50s to around 60 this afternoon.

A warm front will push north and into western New York late
tonight. Model consensus suggests this front will be a couple
hours slower, so adjusted forecast timing accordingly. Expect a
narrow band of showers along this boundary to enter far western
New York just after midnight and move into the Buffalo and
Rochester metro areas around daybreak. The band of showers will
then weaken as it encounters drier air when it moves across the
Eastern Lake Ontario region Wednesday morning. The showers will
be light (producing less than a tenth of an inch), only lasting
an hour or two at any location.

Low pressure will move into central lower Michigan Wednesday.
The slightly slower timing is good news, since the warm sector
will end up being mainly dry for a notable portion of Wednesday
across Western NY, with the next round of showers not arriving
until very late afternoon or evening. Most of the Wednesday will
be warm and windy, with southeast downslope winds boosting
temperatures to near 70 on the lake plains of Western NY, and
low to mid 60s elsewhere. Winds will gust to 30-40 mph areawide,
with some gusts of 45 mph possible in downslope areas along the
Lake Erie shore and off the Tug Hill and Western Adirondacks.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...

A very active period will set in for Wednesday night through
Thursday night. Surface low pressure over central lower
Michigan Wednesday evening will elongate with time, with several
weakening low centers remaining from Michigan to western Quebec
by late Thursday. A sharp mid level trough will advance slowly
eastward across the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley through the
period. Deep southerly flow ahead of the system will capture a
plume of Gulf of Mexico moisture, with PWAT rising to 1-1.25".
These values are not excessive for the end of April, but in the
presence of strong, slow moving synoptic scale forcing they do
raise some concern.

Looking at the details, Wednesday night and Thursday an occluding
front will move into Western NY, and then advance very slowly
eastward towards the Genesee Valley early Thursday morning
before finally reaching the eastern Lake Ontario region later
Thursday. 12Z model consensus is slightly slower than previous
model guidance, suggesting that eastern portions of the cwa may
remain dry much of Wednesday night. A belt of strong southerly
flow just off the surface will enhance moisture transport and
convergence along the slowly advancing boundary, supported by
strong ascent ahead of the sharp mid level trough. This will
produce periods of rain Wednesday night through Thursday, with
enough instability to support a chance of a few embedded
thunderstorms as well.

The overall pattern is supportive of the potential for heavy
rainfall, mainly from the western Southern Tier through the
western Finger Lakes, to points southeast and east of Lake
Ontario. Rainfall amounts in these areas may exceed 1 inch from
this system, and localized 2+ inch amounts are plausible if a
band of heavy rain or thunder trains. WPC has a slight risk of
excessive rainfall across southeastern New York, with a marginal
risk extending into our area. The big question for our cwa, is
how far north the heavier rain makes it. If it does, there would
be a risk of both river flooding and possibly even flash
flooding. However, there is not ample forecast confidence to
issue a watch due to uncertainty in the location of the heavy
rainfall.

The risk for heavy rain will diminish east of Lake Ontario by late
Thursday night as the occluded front moves off into eastern NY and
weakens. The mid level trough will then slowly cross the eastern
Great Lakes Thursday night through Friday, with light showers
continuing.  Temperatures will cool back to below normal by
Friday as a pocket of cool air aloft moves into the eastern
Great Lakes.

Otherwise, gusty winds will continue to be a possibility off the
Tug Hill and Western Adirondacks Wednesday night into Thursday.
925mb winds are forecast to be 50-55 knots, with a good chance
that advisory level winds (50 mph) will be reached at some
point. The longer the showers hold off the better chance there
will be for advisory level gusts. Will let later shifts assess
this potenial.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
The showers will then gradually taper off from northwest
to southeast Friday night as the system moves off the New England
coast.

A weak ridge of high pressure surface and aloft will build into the
eastern Great Lakes Saturday, bringing a much needed return to dry
weather. A weak trough will then cross the region Sunday. Moisture
and forcing are not impressive with this system, but a few light
showers are possible. Temperatures aloft begin to warm quickly as
the late week system moves away, with high temperatures likely
reaching the 60s both days this weekend.

A cold front will then cross the eastern Great Lakes Sunday night,
with a chance of a few more light showers. A much cooler airmass
will then move back into the region Monday, with temperatures
trending below normal. Medium range guidance suggests these below
normal temperatures are likely to have staying power through the
first week of May. Normal temperatures are rising quickly at this
time of year, so below normal temperatures for early May will likely
equate to highs in the 50s most days next week.

.AVIATION /19Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Expect mainly VFR flight conditions through 18Z Wednesday.
Despite lots of cloud cover, cloud bases will mainly be above 4k
feet. The exception is across the Western Southern Tier
(including KJHW) where periods of MVFR cigs are possible late
this afternoon and again late tonight when a weak warm front
moves through and produces some light rain showers.

Increasing winds during the day Wednesday, but it should remain
dry until after 21Z when showers will spread across the region
from west to east.

Outlook...

Wednesday night through Friday...Areas of IFR/MVFR with
occasional showers.
Saturday...Mainly VFR.
Sunday...VFR/MVFR. A chance of showers.

While high pressure over Quebec will maintain a relatively weak
sfc pressure gradient over the Lower Great Lakes this
afternoon, easterly winds will freshen over Lake Ontario. This
will lead to choppy conditions for the nearshore waters west of
Hamlin Beach.

Increasing east to southeast flow tonight and Wednesday will
produce choppy conditions on Lake Ontario, especially the
western half. Highest waves will be in Canadian waters.
