.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will ridge across our region this afternoon, providing
sunshine and warm temperatures in the lower 60s for most locations.
Low pressure will slowly track from Ohio to the mid-Atlantic coast
through Sunday. Rain from this system will spread into the region
tonight, with a soaking rainfall lasting into Sunday night.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
A ridge of high pressure extending across Ontario province and into
the lower Great Lakes will provide fair weather this afternoon, and
a decent amount of sunshine. Cloud cover will spread into the region
from the south as an upper level trough over the mid-Mississippi
Valley pushes closer to the area. Temperatures will be notably
warmer then they have been, with highs in the lower 60s at most
locations. The exception is along the immediate south shores of Lake
Ontario and Lake Erie where the lake breeze will keep it 10-15
degrees cooler.

Stacked low pressure will slowly move into southern Ohio tonight.
Mid-level thermal gradient will tighten across the Western Southern
Tier this evening, then it will push northward as a southeasterly
flow develops due to the closer proximity of the low. This boundary
will provide a focus for rain to develop around sunset across the
Western Southern Tier before moving northward across the rest of the
area later tonight. Large scale lift and model agreement provides
high confidence in measurable precipitation even though amounts will
be modest (generally less than a quarter inch) through daybreak
Sunday.

Temperatures will drop into the lower to mid 40s tonight, in large
part due to evaporational cooling as the rain moves in. The
exception is across the North Country where there may be ample
breaks in the cloud cover for radiational cooling this evening.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
A closed, nearly vertically stacked low will move from the Ohio
Valley Sunday morning to central PA by Sunday evening, then slowly
east to southern New England by Monday. The slow moving system
passing just to our south will keep a wet, cool regime in place
across the eastern Great Lakes.

Sunday morning the initial wing of warm advection and frontogenesis
will be drifting northeast across the area, producing a period of
rain along the corridor between the NY Thruway and south shore of
Lake Ontario. Additional forcing will bring an expanding area of
rain into the Southern Tier in the morning, with a possible brief
break in steady rain between these two areas. The Saint Lawrence
Valley should still be mainly dry through Sunday morning, farthest
removed from forcing and moisture.

The most significant rainfall with this system will occur from late
Sunday morning through Sunday evening. Numerous vorticity maxima
orbiting the closed low will bring periods of DPVA within a general
diffluent mid/upper level flow pattern in the northeast quadrant of
the system. A differential thermal advection pattern will develop
Sunday, with low level cold advection topped by mid level warm
advection. This will act to strengthen an axis of frontogenesis and
deformation to the north of the surface low track, supporting
widespread rain across our region from late Sunday morning through
Sunday evening. The least amount of rain will fall near the Saint
Lawrence, but even here some rain is likely Sunday afternoon and
evening.

Later Sunday night and Monday the vertically stacked low will
gradually weaken and broaden, with secondary surface cyclogenesis
evolving just off the southern New England coast as large scale
forcing increases atop the coastal front. This will allow
precipitation to slowly taper off across Western NY, with the far
western end of the state possibly becoming mainly dry by late Sunday
night and Monday. Meanwhile, an axis of deformation will maintain
steadier light precipitation right through the day Monday across the
Finger Lakes region and points east/southeast of Lake Ontario.
Rochester will be near the western edge of this steadier
precipitation Monday.

Model guidance has trended just a little warmer at the surface and
through the column with this system, allowing the vast majority of
the precipitation to fall as rain. Some wet snowflakes may mix in
late Sunday night and Monday morning across the high terrain of the
Southern Tier, Bristol Hills, and Tug Hill region with little or
no accumulation.

Total rainfall from tonight through Monday may exceed 1 inch from
portions of the Southern Tier through the western Finger Lakes to
points southeast of Lake Ontario, with 0.50"-1.0" farther north and
west. These rainfall amounts will be spread over 48+ hours, so no
hydro issues are expected.

Monday night the secondary coastal low will move northeast through
the Gulf of Maine. Some light precipitation will persist east of
Lake Ontario, with mainly rain showers at lower elevations and some
wet snow mixing in across higher terrain. This will gradually end by
late Monday night as moist cyclonic flow slowly departs.

&&

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A narrow axis of high pressure surface and aloft will bring a return
to dry weather Tuesday, albeit brief. Temperatures aloft will remain
relatively cool, but sunshine should support highs in the 50s.

The next system will dive into the mean longwave trough in the
eastern United States by the middle of next week. This cutoff low
will reach the Ohio Valley later Wednesday, then slowly cross the
eastern Great Lakes Thursday before reaching New England and the Mid
Atlantic by late Friday. Increasing moisture and forcing ahead of
this system will bring rain back into the region late Tuesday night
and Wednesday, with showers continuing through the end of the week
as the cutoff low slowly crosses the region.

This will be a somewhat warmer system, with highs likely reaching
the lower 60s in many areas Wednesday, and then 50s for highs
Thursday and Friday.

.AVIATION /18Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Widespread VFR flight conditions will continue at our terminal
locations through 00Z this evening. There will be some stratus
with MVFR cigs across the Southern Tier, but these should remain
south and east of our TAF sites.

Stacked low pressure will slowly move northeastward out of the mid-
Mississippi Valley. Rain will develop and slowly spread from S-N
tonight. Cigs gradually lower to MVFR following the start of the
rain. Steadier rain will move in Sunday, with an increasing
northeasterly flow lowering cigs resulting in a mix of IFR/MVFR
flight conditions during the day.

Outlook...

Sunday night...IFR/MVFR with rain or snow.

Monday...MVFR/IFR with rain in the morning, then improving to VFR
as rain ends.

Lower Great Lakes this afternoon. Meanwhile, a northeasterly
gradient flow will develop as low pressure approaches from the mid-
Mississippi Valley. This will be enhanced by the lake breeze,
resulting in choppy conditions on Lake Erie - especially near the
Pennsylvania border. Nudged winds and waves up above model guidance
for this afternoon and evening.

East/Northeast winds on both Lake Erie and Ontario will increase
tonight and Sunday as a surface low draws closer to our region. This
will likely yield SCA conditions on the western waters of Lake
Ontario and south of the Buffalo Harbor on Lake Erie for the second
