.SYNOPSIS...
A round of rain showers will arrive tonight into Thursday
morning as a strong cold front plows through the region Thursday
morning. This front will usher in a stretch of very chilly
weather with snow showers for the end of the week. Higher
terrain will see an accumulating wet snowfall Thursday night
into Friday morning. Lingering rain and snow showers will taper
off by Saturday with below normal temperatures expected into
the upcoming weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Quiet weather will continue into this evening before rain showers
arrive tonight as a northern stream trough sends a sharp cold front
down through the Great Lakes. A deepening surface low will track
across central Ontario tied to a potent shortwave with the cold
front entering western New York around daybreak Thursday. Widespread
showers will develop from west to east, with the bulk of the
activity moving through after midnight. Thunder not completely
out of the question with some elevated instability showing up
but this looks to be focused closer to the Pennsylvania state
line.
Sharp cold front will sweep quickly across the area Thursday
morning. It will become a windy day as a tight pressure gradient
sets up over the region in the wake of the strong cold front.
Westerly cold advection will result in deepening boundary layer
mixing with nearly all momentum transfer profiles suggesting wind
gusts in the 35-45 mph range. The cold advection and steepening
lapse rates along with wrap-around moisture will set off frequent
showers. Temperatures not rising much if at all within the cold
air advection with most readings staying in the 40s.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
It will remain windy and unsettled across the region Thursday night,
as a tight surface pressure gradient and persistent 40-45kt low
level jet within a cyclonic flow will be found over the lower Great
Lakes. Winds will subside just a bit Thursday evening before ramping
back up once again as the aforementioned low level jet moves
into the region beginning late evening. Wind gusts of 35-45mph
will become common. The strong gusty conditions will be
accompanied by some mixed rain and snow showers during the
evening, which will change to mainly just snow showers, while
increasing in coverage during the course of the night. While H85
temps of -6C to -8C will not support pure lake effect, there
will be some lake enhancement of the snow showers that will
support some accumulations. While most areas will see a coating
to less than an inch, the combination of lake enhancement and
westerly upslope flow will bring the possibility for snowfall
amounts of 2-3 inches across the higher terrain of the Southern
Tier and east of Lake Ontario. Low temperatures will range from
the upper 20s across the higher terrain to the lower and mid 30s
across the lower elevations.
Windy and chilly conditions with snow showers will continue into
Friday morning as a stacked low centered just east of Maine sustains
a deep, moist cyclonic flow over the lower Great Lakes. Lake
enhanced flow of -6C to -8C H850T air will keep fairly widespread
rain and wet snow showers in place during the morning. A mid level
shortwave pinwheeling around the main upper low will pass north to
south across the area, stripping some of the mid level moisture away
during the afternoon. This will allow snow and rain shower activity
to slowly taper off in areal coverage and general intensity through
the second half of the day. Additional snowfall amounts will range
from an inch or so across the higher terrain of the Southern
Tier/Finger Lakes region, to an additional 2-3 inches across the Tug
Hill and western Dacks. Most other areas will see a coating or less.
The bulk of the accumulating snow will occur during the first half
of the day. In addition, wind gusts nearing 45 mph or maybe a
bit higher will be possible from Orleans to Oswego counties,
along with the higher terrain across the Southern Tier and
Finger Lakes as a 45-50kt low level jet moves across the area
during the morning and early afternoon. A wind advisory may be
needed for these areas. It will be a raw and chilly day with
highs in the lower to mid 30s across the higher terrain, with
upper 30s to around 40 elsewhere.
One last disturbance will pass over the region Friday night. This
will help to support some some additional rain and snow showers,
with residual lake enhancement and west-northwesterly upslope flow
placing the most widespread snow shower activity east and southeast
of Lake Ontario. Snow showers will taper off overnight, with an
additional light accumulation possible across eastern areas.
Surface and mid level ridging will build across the lower Great
Lakes Saturday and Saturday night. After a few leftover
scattered light flurries and snow showers across eastern areas
early Saturday morning, expect dry weather through the bulk of
Saturday night. It will remain fairly chilly Saturday, however
ensuing warm advection will start to take the chill off the
Canadian airmass, so that with the help of at least partial
sunshine (especially latter half of the day), temperatures will
climb back into the lower and mid 40s for lower elevations with
30s hanging tough across the higher terrain. Despite these
readings still being some 10-15 degrees below normal, noticeably
lower winds and some sunshine should make it feel appreciably
better.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Deteriorating conditions can be expected as we open this
period...as a large and somewhat disorganized storm system will
take aim on our region from the Lower Mississippi Valley. The
developing southern stream cyclone will force a burgeoning mid
level ridge to make its way across the Lower Great Lakes with
the door being opened for GOMEX moisture to pour northwards.
While the first half of the day should be rain free over our
region...there will be at least the chance for some light rain
during the afternoon. This will especially be the case over the
Southern Tier. The silver lining to this scenario is that our
stretch of chilly weather will come to an abrupt halt...as the
mercury will soar to between 55 and 60 across the western
counties. As one would expect in this situation...it will be
cooler across the North country with highs only in the low to
mid 50s.
It will then become quite unsettled over the region Sunday night and
Monday...as a deep sub 990mb low will advance from the Ohio Valley
to southern Ontario. This is the climatologically favored track and
one that is supported by the more trusted ECMWF. Initially...this
scenario would generate a soaking rain over the region Sunday night
and Monday morning. The forcing for what could be a significant
rainfall would be supplied by a 50-60 kt low level jet impinging
upon an associated warm frontal boundary. As the deep sfc low passes
to our west Monday afternoon...a strong cold frontal passage would
then usher in a period of strong winds that would persist through
Monday night.
Tuesday would then be characterized by gusty winds and much chillier
conditions...as a deep cyclonic flow would once again set up across
the region. This would be accompanied by some mixed rain and wet
snow showers.

.AVIATION /20Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Cigs have continued to improve with all TAF sites up to VFR.
Conditions will stay VFR through the evening, before a period
of mainly MVFR conditions develop (lowering to LIFR at KJHW)
after midnight as a strong cold front and widespread showers
sweep across western New York.
Outlook...
Thursday...VFR/MVFR with showers likely. Westerly winds gusting to
35 knots.
Friday...VFR/MVFR with rain/snow showers likely.
Saturday and Sunday...Mainly VFR.

Conditions will remain below small craft advisory criteria tonight,
but in the wake of a strong cold frontal passage Thursday morning.
winds will quickly strengthen. The strong westerly winds will
require high end small craft advisories that will be in effect
through at least Friday evening. In fact, winds will approach gale
force intensity on Lake Ontario.
Winds and waves will then notably subside late Friday night and
Saturday, as high pressure will work its way across the Lower Great
Lakes.

Westerly winds increasing to 30 knots with higher gusts across Lake
Ontario late Thursday into Friday will result in significant
wave action developing on the east end of Lake Ontario. The wave
action combined with high water levels will result in some
lakeshore flooding and some erosion along the immediate Lake
Ontario shore Thursday night into Friday. A lakeshore flood
warning remain in effect for Jefferson through Wayne counties.
