Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure ridging southward from Quebec will maintain dry
weather across the region through this evening. Then low
pressure will track across the midwest, with several rounds of
rain and possibly a thunderstorm as a warm front slowly moves
through. Sunday will be showery, windy, and warm as the low
moves into the central Great Lakes.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A broad high pressure ridge extending across Quebec and into our
region will maintain dry weather through at least this evening.
Satellite imagery shows that skies have cleared out nicely this
afternoon, with mostly sunny skies across the region. The sunshine
has allowed temperatures to rise into the 50s over much of western
NY away from the lakes, though it is only in the lower to middle 40s
near the immediate lakeshores due to lake breezes and also in the
North Country.

The departing high will maintain dry weather for the vast majority
of tonight, providing fair radiational cooling conditions for at
least this evening. Low temperatures will be reached the first half
of the night, before clouds and an increasing southerly flow move in
from west to east and cause temperatures to rise.

Low pressure will develop across the midwest as a shortwave digs
across the region. A warm front will extend well to the east of
this low, with a sharpening mid-level thermal gradient. Rain
will develop along a 40 kt LLJ with the approaching warm front
tonight, and gradually push northward into the Western Southern Tier
late tonight. The rain will continue to spread northward to at least
areas south of Lake Ontario and possibly into the North Country
during the day Saturday. This will produce decent amounts of
rainfall across the Western Southern Tier, where amounts should
average 0.50 - 0.75 inches. Otherwise, Saturday will be a bit
breezy, especially in regions favorable to southerly downsloping
where gusts could reach 35-40 mph.

The more significant round of rain will come Saturday night into
Sunday morning as the warm frontal boundary moves across the
region. Moisture will increase with precipitable water values
increasing to 1.25 - 1.50 inches, which is quite moist for this
time of year. Meanwhile broad warm air advection will support an
area of rain which will move across the region and bring a
soaking half inch to an inch of rain to the area. As the front
moves through later in the night, elevated instability will
increase with a chance of thunderstorms lasting into the day
Sunday. SPC has just a small portion of our region in a marginal
risk for severe weather. While forecast wind fields do support
this with lots of shear, the late night and morning timing is
quite unfavorable for severe weather. Even so, a stray strong
storm cannot completely be ruled out.

Temperatures will briefly rise well into the 60s south of Lake
Ontario with the passage of the warm front. Even 70 degrees is
not out of the question with 850mb temps to around +11C. A
brisk southwesterly flow will develop across the region on
Sunday. Although the low takes a fairly favorable track to
produce strong winds in our region (central Great Lakes), the
low will be weakening which will lower the risk. Also, forecast
925mb wind speeds are 45-50 knots which also tends to suggest
more advisory level gusts northeast of the lakes.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Slowly progressing eastward into southeastern Ontario, the low
pressure system will rapidly weaken before transferring its energy
to the developing and strengthening secondary low pressure system
forming off the New England coastline Sunday night and Monday.
Eventually, the parent low will move overhead which will provide
both cyclonic flow and ample wrap around moisture in the area, in
addition to the upper level trough extending westward behind the
coastal low will keep the threat for showers through much of this
period. While there are chances for showers across the entire
region, the stronger chances and more persistent showers will be in
the areas east of Lake Ontario due its close proximity to the
coastal low and upper level jet dynamics.

As dry air begins to enter the region Monday night into Tuesday, a
gradual end to precipitation will occur across WNY. However, some
pesky rain and higher elevation wet snow showers will continue
across the eastern portions of the region due to remnants of
cyclonic flow to our east. High pressure centered well north of the
Hudson Bay will extend southward and pass east through the region on
Tuesday and Tuesday night, which should provide for a brief period
of dry weather.

&&

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
For the long term teleconnections suggest a blocking pattern
forming, not that unusual for this time of year as we head into
the beginning of April. The latest North Atlantic Oscillation
forecasts from the Climate Prediction Center suggest the NAO
becoming negative this period...with this negative index
favoring blocking patterns over the eastern half of North
America.

A look at the models (GFS, ECMWF, Canadian) and their ensembles
also depicts an amplified, blocking pattern, though where an
upper level trough will focus is still uncertain. This trough,
likely to close off in a blocking pattern may lie across the
Great Lakes (a wetter solution for our region), or closer to
the western Atlantic (not as wet and allows for milder air to
sneak into the western zones).

For the forecast, chances for mainly rain showers will be
through this period, with high temperatures running slightly
below normal, and overnight lows near normal.

.AVIATION /21Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
VFR flight conditions will last through most of tonight. Rain will
slowly spread in from the southwest after 08Z tonight, with flight
conditions lowering to MVFR/IFR from SW-NE Saturday morning, though
it may take until late afternoon before anything lower than VFR
occurs at KART.

Outlook...
Saturday night and Sunday...MVFR/IFR with rain and possibly
thunderstorms.
Sunday night...Mainly MVFR with showers likely.
Monday through Wednesday...Mainly VFR. A chance of rain
showers.

&&

.MARINE...
A warm front will lift toward the area tonight and Saturday.
Strengthening easterly flow north of the front may bring a
period of choppy (possibly SCA) conditions to the western end
of Lake Ontario by Saturday.

An area of low pressure will strengthen over the upper Midwest as it
moves eastward through the upper Great Lakes Sunday.
Southwesterly, then westerly flow will likely increase to over
25knots with a period of small craft conditions developing
Sunday into Monday.

.HYDROLOGY...
There will be two rounds of rainfall over the weekend. The first
will happen late tonight and Saturday and primarily impact the
Southern Tier/Allegheny Basin. The second round will impact the
entire region Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Total rainfall amounts are expected to average in the 0.75 -
1.50 inch range. These amounts are not likely to cause
hydrological problems, however there will be a convective
element to the precipitation, so there is a risk for locally
higher amounts. One thing to watch is that the heaviest rain is
expected to pass just to the south with the first round of rain.
If heavier rain does push into the Allegheny Basin then this
would raise the risk for flooding.

Looking at river basin, a few GEFS/NAEFS ensembles show forecast
points reaching action stage, with a very small risk of flood.
However, the bias corrected HEFS shows lower chances with only a
small chance that forecast points will reach action. Will
continue to monitor, keeping an eye on the Buffalo Creeks in
case locally heavier rainfall occurs in a specific basin. Also,
there is some snow pack remaining in the Black River basin,
enough that rainfall amounts 0.5 - 1 inch greater than expected
could push forecast points to flood.

WPC has a marginal flood risk across our region, with this
mostly due to a marginal risk for areal or flash flooding. For
this, the greatest concern would be urban areas, but overall QPF
amounts and ensembles suggest the risk is low, but non-zero.

Will maintain a mention in the HWO to highlight the small chance
for flooding with this system.
