.SYNOPSIS...
A storm system organizing over the central plains will track to our
west tonight then will move across Quebec on Friday while shoving a
powerful cold front through our region. This scenario will result in
widespread rain tonight...then showers and strong winds with
possible thunderstorms on Friday. A massive area of Canadian high
pressure will then move through the Lower Great lakes during the
weekend to guarantee fair chilly weather.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
While the disturbance responsible for last nights weather has pushed
well out of the area...a wealth of low level moisture remains over
region...trapped beneath a pronounced subsidence inversion. Given
the light flow in the low levels...the vast majority of this cloud
cover should remain in place for the remainder of the day. The best
chance for any sun this afternoon will be found across the Eastern
Lake Ontario region.

Shortwave energy found over the 4-corners region will move into the
central Midwest by this evening. Meanwhile, its corresponding
elongated surface low will ever so slowly consolidate to our west
over the central Great Lakes. While this occurs, its attendant warm
front will track into, and then across the Lower Lakes. An
intensifying 60+ knot LLJ and tightening of the H850 thermal
boundary in concert with deep moisture transport along the front
will support increasing chances for widespread rain. Additionally,
as this potent LLJ plows into the region a few rumbles of thunder
will likely be possible overnight. Bufkit profiles do support this
elevated convection with roughly about 50-100 J/KG. Rainfall amounts
will range from a third up to half an inch across area basins with
localized higher amounts with any convection. In terms of
temperatures, lows will actually occur early with low to mid 50s
across Western NY and the Finger Lakes region before steadily rising
overnight. Across the North Country, lows will be found in the low
to mid 40s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
...Damaging Winds Possible on Friday...

A sharp, digging trough will move into the Upper Great Lakes Friday,
while an associated surface low moves from the central Great Lakes
to Quebec. The associated surface cold front will not move through
our region until late Friday, although it will be preceded by 1 or 2
pre-frontal troughs.

The final period of warm advection driven showers will move through
the eastern Great Lakes Friday morning, supported by isentropic
upglide and moisture transport/convergence enhanced by a strong 60+
knot southwesterly low level jet. The best coverage of these morning
showers will be from the western Southern Tier through the western
Finger Lakes to the eastern Lake Ontario region. There may be a few
embedded, elevated thunderstorms as well. These morning
thunderstorms will not pose any severe weather risk, they will be
rooted well off the surface in the elevated layer of instability,
with little chance of wind making it to the surface through the
stable boundary layer.

Rain will decrease in coverage by midday as a mid level dry slot
moves into the eastern Great Lakes. A pre-frontal trough will then
cross the eastern Great Lakes in the afternoon, with associated
convergence and increasing large scale support from the approaching
mid level trough forcing another brief round of greater shower
coverage. There will still be enough instability to support a chance
of a few thunderstorms as well. By this time the instability will be
rooted closer to the surface. This time window will have the best
opportunity for stronger convection to develop. Shear profiles will
be strong, but instability will be very limited given marginal
surface temperatures and warm mid level temperatures. SPC has
maintained a Marginal Risk for our region. Locally, the most
probable location of stronger storms would be from the western
Southern Tier through the Finger Lakes to points southeast of Lake
Ontario with isolated strong wind gusts and small hail. Developing
stable lake shadows will lessen the risk northeast of Lakes Erie and
Ontario.

Strong winds are also a concern for Friday. The track of the surface
low matches our climatology for high wind events, with a deepening
surface low passing to our north and west. That said, the
thermodynamic setup is atypical. The strongest winds aloft and best
potential for damaging winds is in the warm pre-frontal airmass, not
the typical post-frontal setup. By the time strong cold advection
and pressure rises arrive, the strong winds aloft will be well east
of our area. Within the warm airmass, winds in the 2-5K feet layer
will be on the order of 55-60 knots. We will likely need to see some
sunshine, or at least thinner cloud cover, in order to steepen lapse
rates sufficiently to mix these strong winds down to the surface.
This may happen for a brief window from midday through mid
afternoon.

If we do get steeper lapse rates, gusts may reach 60 mph from the
Niagara Frontier to Rochester. In these warm, sunshine driven
environments the strongest gusts are inland from the lakes, with the
stable dome of cooler air over and immediately downwind of the lakes
lessening wind potential. Given the atpyical nature of this
potential wind event, maintained the High Wind Watch for now in
areas northeast of Lake Erie. If we do steepen lapse rates
sufficiently, we may see advisory level gusts outside of the watch
area as well.

Most of the showers will end by early Friday evening with the
passage of the cold front. It will become marginally cold enough to
support a lake response Friday night, but a rapidly drying airmass
and lowering inversion will keep this response muted. There may be a
few light rain/snow showers going over to snow showers mainly east
and southeast of Lake Ontario with little to no accumulation.

Strong high pressure will build from the Upper Great Lakes Saturday
to western Quebec Saturday night. This will bring a return to dry
weather and clearing skies to our region. Temperatures will run well
below average during this period, with highs in the low to mid 30s
Saturday, and lows in the teens to around 20 Saturday night.

&&

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Sunday, strong high pressure will build slowly east across Quebec,
maintaining dry weather and sunshine. Temperatures will remain a
little below average in the associated cool airmass.

The next trough will then advance across the Ohio Valley and eastern
Great Lakes Monday, eventually supporting secondary cyclogenesis off
the east coast. The trough will bring an increasing chance of
precipitation very late Sunday night through Monday. Temperatures
aloft and at the surface may allow for some of this to fall as wet
snow initially before temperatures begin to warm later Monday
afternoon. This system will move out Monday night, followed by weak
high pressure and dry weather for Tuesday.

The next in a series of progressive troughs will move towards the
eastern Great Lakes late Tuesday night and Wednesday. Temperatures
will be a little warmer by the time this system arrives, supporting
mainly rain.

&&

.AVIATION /15Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
A wealth of moisture trapped beneath a pronounced subsidence
inversion will keep MVFR cigs in place across the western and north
central New York for much of the remainder of today...with IFR cigs
found across the Southern Tier and parts of the Finger Lakes. Any
improvement to VFR conditions are expected to be short lived.

Tonight...Any areas of VFR weather will once again give way to
lowering cigs and generally deteriorating conditions. A warm front
will push northward through the region overnight...and this will
lead to widespread rain and even the risk for isolated
thunderstorms. This will be accompanied by MVFR to IFR cigs.
Finally...there is the risk for some LLWS as a result of a 50-60 jet
passing through at 2500 ft.

Outlook...
Friday...IFR to MVFR in widespread showers and possible
thunderstorms. Strong sfc winds expected.
Saturday and Sunday...VFR.
Monday...MVFR to VFR with chance rain/snow showers.

&&

.MARINE...
Light winds and negligible waves will remain in place for Lake Erie
today. Meanwhile, moderate to fresh easterlies on Lake Ontario will
promote choppy conditions west of Hamlin Beach, particularly over
the open lake waters during this same time frame.

A consolidating and intensify low over the central Great Lakes will
bring about strengthening south to southwest winds tonight. As the
low passes to our west and northwest of the Lower Lakes this will
generate strong southwest to west- southwest winds for Friday just
ahead and then behind the cold front. This will bring a round of
solid Small Craft Advisory conditions, but sustained winds will
remain below gale force.

High pressure then builds in behind the cold front with winds
diminishing Friday night. Lighter winds and waves action returns
over the weekend.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A period of strong WNW winds will develop Friday evening and
Friday night behind the cold front. Sustained winds will reach
around 30 knots on Lake Ontario. The combination of high lake
levels and strong onshore winds will result in an elevated risk
of lakeshore flooding along the southeast shores of Lake
Ontario. A Lakeshore Flood Watch has been issued for Wayne,
N.Cayuga, and Oswego counties.

Winds will not be as strong on Lake Erie, peaking at around 25
knots on Friday. The latest Lake Erie lake level modeling
suggests the lake will stay below the 8 foot above low water
datum flood stage.
