.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure drifting across Quebec will maintain dry though rather
cloudy weather this afternoon, then a cold front will move across
the region late tonight and early Friday. This front will bring rain
showers and gusty winds to the region, followed by dry and colder
weather which will last through the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
High pressure across Quebec and weak mid-level ridging will maintain
mainly dry weather across the region into early this evening. Expect
plenty of cloud cover thoug with extensive clouds extending back
into the Ohio Valley. Did see a few breaks in clouds briefly over
Genesee valley earlier, but clouds already have filled in. Despite
the cloud cover, warm air advection will result in temps reaching
into at least the lower 50s this afternoon. The exception is along
the south shores of Lake Ontario and Erie where a lake breeze will
develop this afternoon and keep temperatures in the 40s. Highs will
also be in the 40s east of Lake Ontario.

Upstream, attention is on sharpening shortwave trough from central
Manitoba to the northern Plains. As the shortwave conitinues to
deepen into this evening over the Upper Great Lakes, loosely
organized sfc trough, waves of low pressure from Kansas north to
northern Ontario will consolidate into one main sfc low tracking
from just north of Lake Superior at 06z Friday/2 AM, to near James
Bay by 18z Fri/2 PM. As this occurs, sharp sfc cold front will reach
western NY after 9z Fri/5 AM, the Genesee Valley and Finger Lakes
shortly after daybreak and the eastern Lake Ontario region by late
morning. Height falls with the shortwave and moisture advection
ahead of the front will support what is looking like a pretty brief
period (2-4 hours) of steadier showers, with scattered showers
preceeding the main period of showers.

Subsidence behind the front will allow back edge of steady showers
to end quickly, roughly around daybreak over western NY and by early
afternoon east of Lake Ontario. Quick moving nature of the system
and strongest moisture advection occurring south of our area, points
to rainfall amounts under a half inch across western NY and
potentially even under 0.25 inch in some areas. Best chance of
seeing 0.50-0.75 inch amounts will be east of Lake Ontario, closer
to the stronger forcing from the shortwave trough and with upslope
lift due to the Tug Hill Plateau. Even so, it appears that though
rivers over the North Country will be running higher due to
combination of rain and snow melt, expected rainfall amounts will
not be enough to cause any flooding. In wake of the widespread
showers, sufficient low-level moisture and flow off Lake Erie and
Lake Ontario may support a few showers/sprinkles for the rest of the
afternoon. Other areas should see clouds begin to clear out as the
subsidence works across.

Other main aspect with this system will be winds, both ahead of the
system tonight and with the cold air advection behind the system on
Friday. To start, a southerly LLJ will strengthen to 55-65 knots
(strongest east of Lake Ontario) as it advances across our region
tonight. No doubt it will become windy tonight though looks like
strongest winds will stay above low-level inversion initially.
Highest gusts later tonight will occur in favorable downslope
regions off the Chautauqua Ridge, and across Jefferson and Northern
portions of Lewis County. The highest gusts will be just before the
rain starts, with peak gusts in the 40 to 45 mph range at these
locations. These stronger southerly winds will result in
temperatures not dropping much at all tonight. Some locations
impacted by the lake breeze this afternoon will actually get warmer
this evening with downsloping and the warmest 850 mb temperatures
just ahead of the cold front.

Then, on Friday, strengthening cold air advection will result in
early morning highs in the mid 40s to lower 50s giving way to slowly
falling temperatures through the remainder of the day, with most
areas likely to see readings dip into the upper 30s to lower 40s by
late afternoon. The combination of this cold advection, partial
sunshine and an overall tightening of the pressure gradient/
strengthening of the low level flow across our region will also lead
to the development of fairly windy conditions during the late
morning and afternoon, as increasing mixing aids in the efficient
transport of higher momentum air from aloft down to the surface.
Given 925-850 mb layer winds increasing to 35-45 knots in the wake
of the cold front...fairly widespread gusts of 35-45 mph appear
likely Friday afternoon...with a few spots east of the lakes
possibly even seeing some advisory-level gusts of up to 50 mph.
Seems greatest chance for this will be east of Lake Ontario where
winds aloft are more toward 40-45 kts instead of the 35-40 kts
projected over western NY. With this in mind, will continue to
highlight this potential in the Hazardous Weather Outlook.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...

Friday night the surface low will slowly weaken and withdraw
eastward across north-central Quebec...while high pressure and
drier air gradually ridges southeastward across the Great Lakes.
The advancing ridge will promote mainly dry weather save for areas
east of Lake Ontario...where upsloping and cyclonic flow could still
generate a few more isolated to widely scattered rain and snow
showers before waning later on in the night. Meanwhile still-windy
conditions at the start of the evening should tend to gradually
diminish through the course of the night as weakening cold advection
goes neutral and vertical mixing diminishes with the loss of
insolation...though some gusts to 40-45 mph could still linger
through the evening along and a little inland from the southern/
eastern shorelines of Lake Ontario. Otherwise...low temperatures
will settle into the upper 20s and lower 30s.

During the weekend impressively strong Canadian high pressure will
build southeastward from northern Alberta and Manitoba to southern
Quebec and New England. The presence of the advancing strong ridge
and copious amounts of attendant dry air and subsidence should
guarantee our region dry and quiet weather for the weekend...with a
passing southern stream system remaining suppressed well to our south
Saturday night and Sunday. Meanwhile temperatures will run from near
to just a bit below average for the middle of March given 850 mb temps
of -6C to -10C and a persistent northerly component to the low level
flow...which will translate into highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s
Saturday and the 30s on Sunday...and nightly lows ranging from the
teens across the North Country to the lower to mid 20s elsewhere.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
On Monday the large surface high will drift southeastward and off
the New England coastline...with a developing southerly return flow
of milder air on its backside helping encourage temps to climb back
to notably above normal levels once again. Expect highs to climb back
to the 45 to 50 range for the most part...while the departing ridge
maintains dry weather across our area.

Monday night and Tuesday the departing high will settle across the
western Atlantic...while cold frontal boundary slowly makes its way
eastward across the Great Lakes. The mild southerly flow in between
these two features will result in a continuation of well above normal
temperatures...while shower chances should also increase with the
approach and passage of the cold front. In its wake...high pressure
and much drier air should then build across our region Tuesday night
and Wednesday...while bringing about a return to fair weather to
close out the period.

.AVIATION /16Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Aside from a few breaks in the cloud cover seen across the Finger
Lakes through the mid morning hours, mainly overcast conditions
exist across the region this midday. Cloud bases continue to vary,
with areas of mainly MVFR cigs which will continue to be most
persistent across the Western Southern Tier (KJHW) through at least
early afternoon, but have also developed along and just inland of
the southern Lake Ontario shoreline, with intermittent MVFR cigs
seen at (KROC), as a convergence zone has set up where moist
northeasterly flow off Lake Ontario meets up with southeasterly flow
just inland. This zone should shift a bit further back to the north
toward the southern Lake Ontario shoreline as southeasterly flow
strengthens a bit during the second half of the day, therefore
expect cigs at KROC will likely rise back to predominantly low VFR
for the afternoon. Expect similar improving conditions at KJHW this
afternoon as well. Otherwise, mainly low VFR cigs will be the rule
through this evening across areas where downsloping south-
southeasterly flow is present.

Rain associated with a front will not arrive until around 06Z
tonight. Winds will increase ahead of the front, with LLWS
developing at KJHW and possibly other sites. Cigs will lower to MVFR
with the arrival of the rainfall tonight. Expect a period of IFR
conditions just ahead of the front late tonight.

Outlook...

Friday...VFR/MVFR with morning showers. Gusty southwest winds
over 30 kts on Friday.

Saturday through Monday...VFR.

.MARINE...
Light winds and negligible waves expected into this evening, with
the exception of western Lake Ontario where a lake breeze enhanced
ENE winds will produce a bit of a chop. Next period of stronger
winds and higher waves starts late tonight with the passage of a
strong cold front. Strongest winds will be post-frontal late Friday
when a brief period of gales is possible on the eastern half of Lake
Ontario. Elsewhere, Small Craft Advisories will be needed.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Friday and Friday night westerly winds will increase to near or
low-end gale force on Lake Ontario...resulting in increased wave
action along the eastern and east-southeastern shore of the lake.

While forecast winds and wave action currently appear too marginal
to be worth issuing a Lakeshore Flood Watch...it would not take much
more of an increase in these to result in an increased risk of flooding
and shoreline erosion. With this in mind we will highlight this
potential in the Hazardous Weather Outlook for now...and continue
to closely monitor the situation over the next day or so.
