.SYNOPSIS...
An area of low pressure will approach from the Upper Great Lakes
tonight, then after crossing our region Friday morning, it will feed
into a rapidly deepening storm well off the coast. This will result
in fairly widespread wet snow and rain showers starting late tonight
into Friday. The precipitation will move out Friday night, then high
pressure will provide us with dry weather during the course of the
weekend with much warmer temperatures starting Sunday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure has shifted east of the region, low pressure to our
west over Lake Michigan will continue to slide south and east
overnight. This surface low is expected to continue its
southeasterly track overnight with precipitation arriving shortly
after midnight across western New York.  Precipitation type for late
tonight will be dependent on the depth of shallow surface based warm
layer and precipitation rate. Thermal profiles for the most part
suggest precipitation will be mainly snow or perhaps a wet snow/rain
mix if the surface based warm layer remains deep enough. Even if the
precipitation falls as all snow, boundary layer temperatures will
still be in the lower to mid 30s which will limit accumulations to
no more than a coating.

The surface low and associated short wave trough cross directly
overhead during the day Friday, which will increase
precipitation coverage. This should especially be the case
during the afternoon and into Friday evening, as the surface
low combines with a coastal low generating a strengthening
northerly flow into the area allowing for some orographic and
lake enhancement south of Lake Ontario. Temperatures will
continue to cool aloft with 850 mb temperatures nearing -10c,
therefore profiles are certainly cold enough for all snow.
However, boundary layer temperatures in the mid to upper 30s
along with diurnal influences will limit accumulations to an
inch or so at best across the higher terrain, likely no more
than a coating across lower elevations.

Better chances for accumulating snow occurs Friday night, but by the
time boundary layer temperatures cool sufficiently for better snow
ratios the precipitation will be diminishing, as the coastal
low pulls away and the northerly flow influences wane. If the
precipitation can last long enough could perhaps see an
additional 1-2" accumulation across the higher terrain south of
Lake Ontario.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
On Saturday strong low level ridging and much drier air will build
across New York State. This will help to scour out any lingering
lower clouds across the higher terrain by midday...with a dry day
and fair amount of sunshine otherwise expected. This said...our
airmass will remain somewhat on the chilly side...and as such will
only support highs ranging from the lower 30s across the eastern
Lake Ontario region to the mid to upper 30s south of Lake Ontario.

During the rest of this period...the core of the strong surface
ridge will slowly drift eastward to the Atlantic coastline Saturday
night and Sunday...before sliding out into the open Atlantic on
Monday. Meanwhile...the axis of its parent broad upper level ridge
will slide eastward across our region and flatten...while the next
mid level trough and its attendant wavy frontal boundary works into
the central Great Lakes by late Monday. As a result of all this our
region will find itself increasingly embedded within a deepening
southwesterly flow and warm air advection regime...which in turn
will bring about our first true taste of springlike temperatures
Sunday and Monday.

More specifically...on Sunday the combination of fairly plentiful
sunshine and 850 mb temps surging into the 0C to +5C range should
push readings to the mid and upper 40s east of Lake Ontario and to
the lower to mid 50s elsewhere...with downsloping even leading to
some upper 50s across portions of the Genesee Valley and western
Finger Lakes. Meanwhile...a general onshore flow will help to keep
areas northeast of the lakes a bit cooler. After a milder Sunday
night that will feature lows in the mid 30s to lower 40s...on Monday
continued warming of the lower levels and decent mixing will help
readings to climb a bit higher still...with lower 50s across the
North Country and widespread mid to upper 50s south of Lake Ontario.
Like Sunday...the warmest overall readings on Monday will be across
parts of the Genesee Valley and western Finger Lakes...where an
added boost from downsloping will likely allow some locations to
reach the lower 60s.

With respect to precipitation chances...the protective influence of
the surface and upper level ridges will keep our region dry from
Saturday night right on through the first half of Monday...before
the approaching mid level trough/frontal system brings a slowly
increasing potential for some scattered rain showers to our area
Monday afternoon. This said...it's quite possible that much of the
day will turn out to be dry.

&&

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/...
In the longer term portion of the forecast the medium range guidance
has come into better overall agreement on the Monday night and
Tuesday period...with the GFS/GEM/ECMWF now all advertising that the
mid level trough/wavy frontal boundary will cross our region during
this time frame. With this better agreement and fairly plentiful
moisture and forcing looking to be in place...rain showers should
become fairly widespread. Sharp drying in the wake of this system's
cold front Tuesday afternoon and evening should then lead to a
marked reduction in pcpn chances by Tuesday night...though have
retained at least a low chance of some lingering rain and snow
showers given both the slower Canadian solution and the overall
trend toward a slower passage of this system.

After what could be a mainly dry start to Wednesday...the various
guidance packages are then in loose agreement on yet another low
pressure system tracking eastward and near or over our area between
later Wednesday and Thursday...with the GEM again notably slower
with the eastward progression of this system compared to its
American and European counterparts. Given the distant time frame and
this disagreement in timing...for now will just cover this with some
broadbrush chance PoPs for rain and snow showers...with the former
more predominant by day and the latter more so at night.

As for temperatures...out ahead of Tuesday's cold front temperatures
should still be rather mild with highs in the upper 40s to mid 50s
expected...with cooler (but still above average) highs mainly in the
40s then anticipated for both Wednesday and Thursday.

.AVIATION /03Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
VFR at all terminals will be maintain through a vast majority of the
night. As we progress through the night though, low pressure
approaching from the Upper Great Lakes will support an increase in
cloud cover.

The increasing and thickening cloud cover will lead to lowering cigs
that will approach MVFR levels over the far western counties during
the wee hours of Friday morning. This lower lowering cloud cover may
be accompanied by some rain or wet snow showers. The latter would
reduce vsbys to MVFR levels.

Outlook...

Friday...MVFR with the likelihood of rain and snow showers.
Saturday and Sunday...Mainly VFR.
Monday...Mainly MVFR with rain and snow showers.
Tuesday...Mainly MVFR with rain showers.

.MARINE...
An area of low pressure will approach from the Upper Great Lakes
tonight, reaching the Niagara River by daybreak Friday. While the
initial response will include freshening easterlies on both lakes,
the track of the surface low between the lakes will result in
opposing winds on the two lakes by daybreak. Southwest winds will
become established on Lake Erie, while easterlies will generally
remain intact on Lake Ontario.

On Friday, the remains of the surface low will feed into a deepening
storm system well off the East Coast. Winds on both lakes will
freshen while becoming mainly northerly for the afternoon well into
Friday night. Small Craft Advisories have been issue for moderately
strong northerly winds for Friday afternoon through Friday night for
the entire south shore of Lake Ontario.

.HYDROLOGY...
On Tonawanda creek, the level has already peaked below flood
stage at Batavia and is forecast to rapidly lower as we progress
through tonight. Meanwhile further downstream at Rapids, a crest
below action stage is now expected late tonight. There still
could be some minor flooding at typically vulnerable locations
along this creek through Friday.
