.SYNOPSIS...
A storm system advancing out of the Tennessee and Ohio Valleys
tonight will produce a slop storm of mixed precipitation tonight and
Thursday. There remains a potential for a widespread significant
snowfall Thursday night and Friday across much of the area when the
system slowly moves to our east. The snowfall will be enhanced
southeast of the lakes where major impacts will be possible.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
A widespread area of snow continuing to spread into the area. This
incoming snow is tied to large scale jet forcing and 850 mb-700 mb
warm advection ahead of larger scale upper trough that is in
multiple segments from the northern Plains to northern Mexico.
Radar trends and surface observations showing there will be a brief
period where snowfall rates will reach an inch per hour.

Leading edge of the wintry mix right at the New York/Pennsylvania
border. This mix will shift northward into the Southern Tier
between 06z and 10z. It should also be noted that there is a
marked decrease in precipitation across Ohio which will work
into western New York and should greatly diminish the
precipitation across the far western New York by morning.

Though steadier precip will lift through by mid morning, there will
be intervals of additional steadier precip through the rest of the
day as region remains within right entrance region of 180+ kt jet
and along or just northwest of tight baroclinic zone. Sfc low and
sfc warm front all the while will remain south of our area, though
there could be increased low-level convergence from inverted trough
extending north from the sfc low. Certainly could see precip taper
with the occasional strip out of deeper moisture/DGZ. For now just
focused the ptype based on the warm layer aloft. Seems the greatest
chance of snow to freezing drizzle/drizzle would be over northern
portions of the Niagara Frontier.

Overall in terms of snow and ice amounts, this forecast did not
change much from previous one. However, there is now some higher
snow totals from late tonight through Thursday afternoon from
Niagara county to the Rochester area as that part of the region may
stay right around zero aloft as the ECMWF was showing ydy and now
the NAM and Canadian indicate. GFS which remains a warm outlier has
come down slightly with its warm layer aloft. Only change to
headlines for this first portion of this double barrelled event
was to extend the winter weather advisory til 23z for the areas
from Buffalo to Rochester, but otherwise the headlines were
left intact. Morning commute on Thursday will be impacted by the
wintry mix and its possible the evening commute over parts of
northern Niagara Frontier could be impacted especially as the
wintry mix begins to change back to snow.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Thursday night an upper level trough will swing across the
Central Great Lakes, with a strong surface high pressure over
western Ontario Canada providing cold, northerly flow across
much of our region. A surface low will be deepening as it
advances northeastward up the spine of the Appalachians Thursday
night, this also along a tight baroclinic boundary below 700
hPa.

To start Thursday night, surface temperatures will remain around
freezing across the interior Southern Tier and through the Finger
Lakes, and perhaps to the southern Tug Hill region...with a still
elevated warm layer aloft. This scenario will continue the threat of
mixed precipitation (sleet and freezing rain) until deeper colder
air from the northwest seeps southeastward. This colder air will
transition precipitation across the entire region to snow by around
midnight.

Later Thursday night a 850 - 700 hPa frontogentic boundary will form
to the northwest of the surface low. This boundary will serve as a
focus for higher snowfall, that will also be enhanced Friday as a
closed 700 hPa low develops over WNY. Synoptic snows Thursday night
will become greater towards the east as this frontogenetic forcing
increases...with snowfall rates of an inch per hour likely under
this band of snow.

As the synoptic snows pull out eastward Friday, a colder airmass
aloft will support lake effect snow under a northerly flow. Bufkit
soundings display a decent amount of moisture within the snow
dendritic growth zone, and inversion heights rising Friday towards 6
to 8K feet. Snow ratios will rapidly increase within this colder
airmass and additional lake effect snow will fall. Will maintain the
watch as is, with potential for a half a foot of snow...with upwards
towards a foot of snow possible along the southern shoreline of Lake
Ontario, and also the Chautauqua Ridge. To the east where a stronger
frontogentic forcing will be found again here upwards to a foot of
snow will be possible. Lowest amounts will be around Metro Buffalo
and towards Niagara Falls where synoptic snows will be lower under
less forcing aloft and also not within a favorable location for lake
effect snow under a north to northwest flow.

Surface high pressure will then build towards our region Friday and
Friday night, with this feature and its drier air weakening the lake
snows and providing clearing to the North Country. With 850 hPa
temperatures dropping well into the negative teens, temperatures
Friday night over a fresh snowpack will lower into the lower teens
across the Lake Plain, and single digits inland. Across the North
Country where skies have the greatest probability of
clearing...overnight lows could drop well into the negative single
digits.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
High pressure will build directly across our region on Saturday...
then will gradually drift across New England and out to sea Saturday
night and Sunday. This will result in lingering scattered lake effect
snow showers off both lakes coming to an end during Saturday...with
mainly dry and quiet weather then following for the remainder of the
weekend. Otherwise well below average highs ranging from the teens
east of Lake Ontario to the lower to mid 20s elsewhere on Saturday
will give way to a return to slightly above normal readings in the
lower to mid 30s on Sunday as warm advection develops in between the
departing surface ridge and low pressure working into the Upper
Great Lakes.

Sunday night and Monday the medium range guidance is in reasonable
agreement on the aforementioned surface low tracking eastward and
passing by a little to our north. With continued warming of the
atmospheric column such that temperatures become marginal for rain
vs. snow and some diurnal warming of the boundary layer also coming
into play during Monday...scattered to potentially more numerous
snow showers Sunday night should give way to more of a rain/snow mix
during Monday...before developing weak ridging potentially brings
about a relative break in the precip Monday night. After that...
another weak system or two could affect our area during the Tuesday-
Wednesday time frame...though with the models becoming increasingly
divergent in the placement and timing of these have just kept a
general mix of scattered rain and snow showers in the forecast...
with ptype again likely to be primarily snow at night and more of a
rain/snow mix by day. Otherwise temperatures should range solidly
above normal once again...with daytime highs largely in the upper
30s to lower 40s...and nightly lows averaging out between 25 and 30.

.AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Deterioration of conditions continues as an area of light to moderate
snow spreads over the region. Steady snow will produce IFR to LIFR
vsbys. Cigs will also be at IFR/LIFR levels during the pre dawn
hours. A change over to a wintry mix will move into the Southern
Tier between 06z and 10z.

Outlook...

Thursday...IFR with widespread snow changing to mixed precipitation.
Thursday night and Friday...IFR in widespread snow. Significant
impacts will be possible...especially at KROC.
Saturday...A chance of snow showers and local IFR southeast of the
lakes, otherwise mainly VFR.
Sunday and Monday...Occasional snow/rain showers with restrictions.

.MARINE...
Winds overnight on Lake Erie and western half of Lake Ontario will
increase enough for small craft advisory conditions. As a surface
low transits the NY/PA border region, winds will slowly trend more
northerly through the day Thursday, and continue just above small
craft advisory conditions across the same portions of the
shorelines. Northerly flow at near this speed will likely continue
through Friday.
