.SYNOPSIS...
Weak surface high pressure will provide mainly dry weather through
this afternoon. The next disturbance will approach the eastern Great
Lakes this evening. This will bring some light snow and minor
accumulations to the area into early Sunday morning. The last in a
series of disturbances will push a warm front across the lower Lakes
on Sunday and Sunday night with some additional light snows,
possibly mixing with a little rain. Dry weather will briefly return
on Monday as high pressure builds into the area, before much more
unsettled weather then follows from Tuesday through late next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
A weak ridge of high pressure will reside across the eastern Great
Lakes providing mainly dry weather through this afternoon. While dry
conditions will prevail, there will be little, if any in the way of
sunshine as a veil of cloud cover will likely remain in place as low
level moisture remains trapped beneath a subsidence inversion.

Otherwise, look for highs east of Lake Ontario in the upper 20s
across the Tug Hill to low 30s across the lower terrain. Elsewhere,
temperatures will range from the low to mid 30s across Western NY
and the Finger Lakes region.

The dry weather will come to an end heading into this evening and
tonight. A sharp mid level trough will approach Western NY bringing
with it an uptick in moisture and a period of light snow overnight.
Look for light snow to break out first across Western NY starting
between 21Z-23Z, then spread east reaching eastern Lake Ontario by
late this evening or early overnight. While snowfall amounts do not
look overly impressive, this system will likely bring a general 1-2
inches for most locations. Don't be surprised if a few locations
across the higher terrain achieve over this amount, especially in
the favored upslope locations. The added contribution from the lakes
may push snowfall totals up to 3 inches, especially east of Erie and
Ontario.

Sunday, ongoing light snowfall across the region will likely taper
off a bit or even end behind the departing shortwave. However, it
will be a brief break as a warm front rapidly swing in on its'
heals. Again, look for an uptick in snow shower activity across
Western NY as the front enters the region, which may mix with a
little rain as surface temperatures climb into the mid and upper
30s. Otherwise, the best chances for additional snowfall
accumulations will likely be found across the higher terrain. This
is where an additional inch or so will be possible. Elsewhere,
snowfall amounts will likely not amount to very much, mainly due to
marginal near surface temperatures.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
A broad mid level ridge over the center of the country Sunday
evening will push east during the course of the night. This will
encourage a warm front to advance to the northeast across our
forecast area with the resulting isentropic lift producing fairly
steady light snow for areas east of Rochester. The snow will taper
off from west to east with snowfall amounts ranging from a light
coating in most areas to a couple inches across the Tug Hill
plateau. It will be somewhat windy as well...as a 45 knot low level
jet will traverse the region. Fortunately...weak lift and a
developing inversion within the warm advection should restrain the
bulk of this to mix to the surface. The result will be winds of 15
to 25 mph for many areas with some gusts that may approach 40 mph.
The highest winds will be found across the higher terrain west of
the Finger Lakes and closer to Lake Erie.

It will be a milder day across the region on Monday...as the axis of
the broad mid level ridge will make its way across the Great Lakes.
The continuing warm advection will send H85 temps to around zero c
which will allow max temps to climb into the 40s throughout the
region. Some of the warmer valleys across the western counties could
even challenge the 50 degree mark. While the day will be pcpn
free...an inverted sfc trough will extend across Lake Erie from the
mid western states...and this will become an important feature to
watch during the ensuing time frames.

The inverted sfc trough will stretch across our forecast area Monday
night...while a tightening baroclinic zone will set up across Lake
Ontario and the North Country. Despite this feature though...much of
the region should remain dry. Some of the guidance packages have
been rather aggressive with QPF within this trough...but am not
impressed with a forcing mechanism for widespread pcpn. While a 140kt
jetlet will streak past the region...any appreciable forcing would
have to come from a subtle wave that could move through within the
inverted trough. Have thus lowered pops regionwide and limited any
forecast pcpn to portions of the Southern Tier.

While most of the guidance packages suggest that the aforementioned
sfc trough will start to push south of the region on Tuesday...
there are large discrepancies as to the resulting pcpn. The GFS
remains the most pessimistic with widespread QPF output...but the
ECMWF has been persistent with its suggestion that a surface high
arching across the southern Ontario will shove the sfc trough/
frontal boundary well to our south. The models are obviously having
issues with resolving the weak waves that could be rippling along
the boundary. Have lowered the pops from continuity to lean closer
to the more realistic looking ECMWF solution...so pops will now
range form slight chc across the North Country to high chc in the
Srn Tier. In other words...likely pops removed. Also for what its
worth...have changed convective based pcpn to stratiform given the
forcing and will extend this reasoning into the Long Term portion of
the package.

The large differences within the various guidance packages will
become even more apparent Tuesday night. While there is general
agreement that at least one wave will move east along the nearly
stationary frontal boundary...the placement of this feature varies
by as much as 150 miles. This is certainly enough to lead to
solutions that range from a mainly pcpn free night to widespread
rain and snow. Have had to once again blend ensemble solutions...
which still seem too pessimistic. Our low confidence forecast for
Tuesday night include likely pops for mainly snow south of a line
from Buffalo and Batavia to Canandaigua.

&&

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
There will certainly be the potential for significant weather during
this period...but as has been the case for the past several days...
guidance has been inconsistent from run to run and from package to
package. The good news is that there has been some consolidation in
the envelope of solutions...but confidence at this point will remain
relatively low.

The main agreement has come from the starting point of the overlying
pattern across the country. Rather than suggesting a closed off
system over the Inter-mountain west on Wednesday...there is general
consensus that a deep longwave trough extending from the northern
plains to the southern Rockies will push east and become negatively
tilted during the period. While sfc waves would still track eastward
within the much talked about low level boundary during the day
Wednesday...there is some agreement that fairly significant
cyclogenesis will take place somewhere over the Ohio valley ahead of
the main mid level shortwave Wednesday night.

The resulting sfc low would then track north-northeast as the
supporting mid level trough becomes negatively tilted Thursday and
Thursday night. The strengthening system would likely move up the
west side of the Appalachians...passing directly over or just to the
west of our forecast area Thursday night. While there is the chance
that the parent low occludes and a secondary coastal storm
develops...ensembles seem to favor an intact cyclone that will
continue to strengthen as it moves into Quebec.

This latter scenario would lead to a surge of warmer air into the
region as the system approaches Wednesday night and Thursday...with
the resulting snow changing over to just rain. While we have aimed
above most guidance packages with temps during this period...it is
not hard to imagine temps in the 50s Thursday afternoon if the ECMWF
forecast track were to verify. As the system passes Thursday
night...there could be a period of strong winds into Friday within
the deepening cold advection. The rain will quickly transition to
snow showers...with lake effect snow then becoming possible on
Friday as H85 temps of -10c or lower will prompt a lake response
within a westerly flow.

Given the continued spread in guidance solutions...this remains a
very fluid forecast so stay tuned.

.AVIATION /19Z SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Low level moisture trapped below a subsidence inversion will keep
mainly marginal MVFR/low VFR CIGS in place through the remainder of
the afternoon across the lower elevation terminals, with MVFR CIGS
found across the higher terrain.

Otherwise, a weak ridge of high pressure will provide mainly dry
weather across Western and North Central NY through the rest of the
afternoon. However, this will be short lived as the next system will
bring about deteriorating conditions starting later this evening.

Tonight, the next disturbance will approach the region with some
light snows developing across Western NY later this evening, then
into the North Central NY during the overnight. This will bring
lowering CIGS and VSBYS resulting in a combination of MVFR/IFR
flight conditions first across Western NY, then impacting terminals
further east overnight.

Light snow will taper off late tonight into early Sunday morning,
before the redeveloping later Sunday morning as the next disturbance
pushes into the region. Although this should allow VSBY to briefly
return to mainly VFR, CIGS will remain MVFR/IFR for Sunday morning,
before light snow moves back in across across western NY by late
morning, returning both CIGS and VSBY back into the MVFR/IFR flight
category once again.

Outlook...
Sunday...MVFR/IFR in periods of snow showers.
Monday...Areas of MVFR stratus, otherwise VFR.
Tuesday through Thursday...MVFR/IFR with periods of mixed
precipitation.

Weak high pressure across the eastern Great Lakes will maintain
light winds and minimal wave action on both lakes today. Tonight, a
sharp mid level shortwave trough approaching the lower lakes will
bring an increase in winds and waves. This initially will bring low
end Small Craft conditions to Lake Erie then both lakes by Sunday
night and on Monday.
