.SYNOPSIS...
A weak storm system could bring an inch or two of snow to southwest
New York State tonight, and though unsettled weather will remain
through the week, it will not be until Christmas Eve that a
significant storm system will begin to impact the region. This
system will bring a period of rain and warm temperatures Christmas
Eve followed by colder air and the potential for snow later on
Christmas Day and into the holiday weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Morning temperatures are currently in the mid 30s across the area,
with mostly cloudy skies overhead. Winds are generally light with
some slightly stronger winds to around 10 MPH northeast of the
lakes.

For the rest of this morning into the afternoon, expect a quiet
conditions with partly to mostly cloudy skies ahead of an
approaching shortwave trough and sfc low this evening. Temperatures
today will be in the low 30s for the higher terrain and in the mid
to upper 30s for the lower elevations.

As the shortwave trough approaches the region from the Midwest and
Central Great Lakes, some showers will develop late this afternoon
over southwestern NY. The greatest amount of precip should stay
south of the area as the base of the trough will track through the
Ohio Valley and southeast to the Delmarva Peninsula from this
afternoon through Tuesday morning. With the axis of the trough
tracking over the region, showers will continue to expand across the
FA this afternoon and evening. Upslope and lake enhancement will
help increase the shower potential for the entire area this evening
and tonight. The higher terrain should stay mostly snow, with lower
elevations a mix of rain and snow, and areas right along the lake
shores can expect rain early before changing to a mix of rain and
snow. Snow accumulations for the area will be greatest for the
Western Southern Tier where up to 2 inches of snow is expected
through Tuesday morning. The higher terrain of the North Country can
expect around an inch of snow. Lower elevations can expect around a
half inch of snow through Tuesday morning.

Tuesday, snow and rain showers will taper off for most areas, the
exception being downwind  of the lakes where a weak lake response is
expected to continue a weak cold front drops south across the area,
causing 850H temps to cool some. The areas with the best chance for
the lake enhanced snow will be downwind of the lakes where an
upstream connection to Lake Huron and/or the Georgian Bay can setup.
These areas will generally be from Monroe to Oswego County and for
S. Erie, Chautauqua, and Cattaraugus counties. Outside of these
areas, showers will be a bit quicker to taper off as the trough
shifts east. Lake enhanced precipitation that does fall should be
light as 850H temps of only around -7C to -8C are expected, which is
marginally supportive for the lake response. Areas across the higher
terrain should stay all snow, while lower elevations are a mix of
rain and snow showers. Snowfall amounts of around a half inch can be
expected over the higher terrain with lower amounts elsewhere. As
the trough shifts east and ridging over the region increases, along
with weak warm air advection, the lake response off of both lakes
will start to weaken during the afternoon hours.

Temperatures tonight will be in the upper 20s to low 30s for the
area. Temperatures on Tuesday will be in the low 30s for the higher
elevations and in the mid 30s for the lower elevations.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
High pressure surface and aloft will move into the region Tuesday
night, shutting down any leftover northwesterly flow light lake
effect snow showers as the night wears on.

Strong warm advection will ensue across our region Wednesday ahead
of powerful storm system located over the upper Great Lakes. Any
warm frontal mixed precip near and north of Lake Ontario Wednesday
morning will give way to breezy and mild conditions. Temps in the
far west should climb into at least the mid 40s, with slightly
cooler temps hanging on east of Lake Ontario. Normal highs at this
time run in the low to mid 30s. Guidance is starting to catch on to
this warmer solution, so remain a bit above guidance at this time
for high temps. If better clearing starts to look more favorable,
would likely need to raise temps more with later packages. Pocket of
+7/+8C 850Ts still on track to be overhead across western NY by
Wednesday afternoon, with it remaining a couple degrees cooler aloft
east of Lake Ontario. No wx related travel issues still on track for
Wednesday.

Model consensus concerning approaching winter storm has sped up just
a bit overall, with the 21/00Z GFS still appearing too fast, with
the 21/00Z ECMWF and Canadian now in fairly good agreement with the
evolution of the system. Will bring in the chance for a few showers
later Wednesday night, mainly across western NY. Any precip will be
in the liquid form across the area with warm airmass in place.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Much talked about winter storm still on track to impact the region
during this period. Warm, wet and breezy conditions on Thursday will
be give way to rain changing over to an accumulating snow Thursday
night as much colder air rushes in. This will be followed by the
potential for a significant lake effect snow event for Christmas Day
through Saturday, particularly east of the Lakes.

Forecast remains largely based off of the ECMWF and Canadian as the
21/00Z runs have come into fairly good agreement with the handling
of the system, with the GFS still the outlier being too fast.

Very complex storm system will evolve during this period, as split
flow phases over the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley. Still appears a
good slug of rain on tap for Thursday into the first part of
Thursday night along and ahead of a strong cold front that will plow
across the region later Thursday and Thursday night. Can't rule out
some minor flooding, however potential does not look high at this
time, as the the heaviest rain will likely remain to our south
and/or east. Strong southerly flow will persist with temps remaining
well above normal.

In the wake of the frontal passage Thursday night, rain will quickly
changeover to snow. Timing still uncertain with changeover, but
there could be several inches of wet snow over the western counties
by daybreak, with the eastern half of the forecast area possibly
following suit Christmas morning.

Coldest airmass of season pours across the region on Christmas Day
with synoptic snow giving way to moderate to heavy lake snow east of
both Lakes. Travel likely to become an issue, mainly from southern
suburbs of Buffalo to PA line and east of Lake Ontario.

Heavy lake snows Christmas night east of both lakes. Cap 8-12k ft so
rates >2" likely with DGZ fully in play. Thunder/lightning
will also be possible (esp east of Lk Ont).

Impressive lake snows will persist through Saturday, possibly
lingering into Sunday morning, while remainder of the region will
experience occasional snow showers under cyclonic flow aloft and mid
winter temps well below freezing.

.AVIATION /15Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Current conditions are composed of VFR and MVFR CIGS. The region
will remain mainly dry today as a surface ridge builds into the
southern portions of the region today. Moisture trapped beneath an
increasing subsidence inversion will lend itself to the continuation
of MVFR ceiling heights through the day. The one area of possibly
improvement will be the Genesee Valley and Finger Lakes region where
away from the Great Lakes a period of VFR ceilings are possible. A
few TAF locations right near the lakes may drop down to IFR at times
with winds off the lakes and low level moisture already in place.

Tonight, MVFR/IFR cigs and vsbys with rain and snow showers for most
of the TAF sites, but especially for KJHW as a shortwave trough
crosses south of the area.

Tuesday...MVFR/IFR. Rain and snow showers likely.

Wednesday...VFR.

Thursday...MVFR in rain. LLWS likely.

Friday...MVFR and some IFR possible in lake effect snows.
