.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will move through the central Great Lakes Saturday,
with a trailing cold front crossing our region late Saturday night.
This system will bring a few rain showers to our region.
Unseasonable warmth will continue through Saturday before colder air
moves back into the eastern Great Lakes Sunday through much of next
week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Satellite imagery showing that the cirrus level clouds have thinned
temporarily, allowing for a good deal of sunshine early this
afternoon. The next batch of thicker mid/high clouds will arrive by
this evening. Highs will reach the low to mid 50s in most areas, and
mid to upper 40s for the North Country. These values are about 15
degrees above average for mid December.

Tonight a frontal zone over southern Ontario will move a little
farther south across Lake Ontario to near the NY Thruway. This will
continue to support an increase in cloud cover, but any
precipitation associated with this frontal zone will be on the cold
side of the boundary and across southern Ontario through daybreak
Saturday. It will be a mild night by mid December standards, with
lows in the mid to upper 30s in most locations.

Saturday a sharp mid level trough and associated surface low will
move from the mid Mississippi Valley in the morning to lower
Michigan by late afternoon. Warm advection and isentropic upglide
will increase across the SW to NE oriented frontal zone ahead of the
system, but the majority of the precipitation for most of the day
will focus from Lake Ontario northward into southern Ontario on the
cold side of the boundary. Meanwhile, most of our area will stay dry
with just a few spotty showers possible through mid afternoon,
especially in areas near the Canadian border. A better chance of
more widespread showers will arrive in Western NY by late afternoon
as a period of strong DPVA arrives just ahead of the trough axis and
moisture transport increases near the nose of a 45 knot low level
jet. Highs will reach the 50s again for most of the area, with mid
to upper 40s for the North Country.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
A slowly filling surface low will track north of Lake Ontario
Saturday night and early Sunday. Rain will be most concentrated near
this surface low, and again later Saturday night as a cold front
advances eastward across our region. Precipitation along the front
will be greatest near the Lakes where added lake moisture will
result in enhanced radar returns.

It will also become windy along and behind the cold front. The
models continue to advertise a 50 to 60 knot LLJ around 2-3K feet
AGL, with this jet mixing down winds to at least 45 mph east and
northeast of Lake Erie, and 35 to 40 mph northeast of Lake Ontario
where the LLJ will be slightly weaker. Timing of the core of the jet
is a bit earlier, with strongest gusts across WNY Saturday night and
into early Sunday...and late Saturday night and through midday
Sunday east of Lake Ontario. Will continue to highlight these
stronger winds in the HWO product Saturday night and into Sunday.

Behind this front a much cooler airmass will settle across the
Eastern Great Lakes through the remainder of the period. This colder
airmass will aid in the generation of weak lake effect snow,
primarily east and southeast of the Lakes Sunday night through
Monday night. Moisture over the Lakes will be limited as deeper
synoptic moisture remains near a passing shortwave traveling across
the Southeastern States. A weak trough approaching the region late
Monday and Monday evening may enhance this lake snow a bit east of
Lake Ontario, before northwest winds shift the diminishing lake
snows southeast of Lake Ontario.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A cold, dry airmass will be in place through a majority of the
Long Term period. Temperatures will be below normal with highs
in the 20s and lows in the single digits to teens from Tuesday
to Friday. Unfortunately for snow lovers, the best chance for
accumulating snow will be closer to Interstate-95 from the Mid-
Atlantic region to southern New England as a coastal low
develops off the coast. There could still be a widespread
snowfall as far north as Western and North Central NY but with
the current consensus track amounts would be light.

&&

.AVIATION /21Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
VFR will prevail through the rest of the afternoon with increasing
VFR mid/high clouds. A frontal zone will sag southward into the area
this evening, stalling near the NY Thruway. Some lower clouds may
develop along and north of this frontal zone with lower end VFR to
MVFR CIGS along and north of the boundary later tonight through
Saturday morning, including most of the TAF sites excluding
KJHW.

The frontal zone will move back north of the area Saturday morning,
with VFR prevailing most of the day and nothing more than a few
scattered light showers. More widespread showers will develop by
late afternoon across Western NY, along with associated MVFR VSBY
and CIGS.

A weak frontal zone will sag south across Lake Ontario this evening,
with ENE winds increasing on Lake Ontario late tonight and Saturday
as high pressure builds east across Ontario and Quebec. This will
bring Small Craft Advisory conditions to the west half of Lake
Ontario late tonight through Saturday.

The frontal zone will move back north across Lake Ontario late
Saturday afternoon, ending the period of stronger ENE winds. Low
pressure will then move from lower Michigan late Saturday afternoon
to southern Quebec by Sunday morning. This will bring a period of
strong southwest winds to Lakes Erie and Ontario, with sustained
winds peaking around 30 knots on both lakes late Saturday night and
Sunday.
