.SYNOPSIS...
Northwest winds flowing over the lakes will generate clouds and a
few light snow showers and flurries this morning. Quiet weather
expected rest of today with some decrease in clouds, before a
frontal system Wednesday brings rain for the lower elvations and
snow for the higher terrain, with most of the precipitation
falling over areas east of the Genesee Valley. Another chance
for precipitation will arrive for the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
Cold northwest flow will keep clouds and a few light snow showers
and flurries possible southeast of the lakes through this morning.
Ridging builds in from the west by afternoon with any lingering
flurries ending and some breaks of sun developing from northwest to
southeast. Western NY and North Country should see at least brief
period of mostly sunny skies late morning through mid afternoon
before clouds increase again ahead of system that moves across
starting late tonight.

Shortwave then advances toward the area from the northwest later
tonight. Increasing lift ahead of this system will support
thickening clouds and chances for precipitation. Some minor
accumulations are possible on the Tug Hill by daybreak Wednesday.
Low temperatures will occur earlier in the night before rising
overnight.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
A shortwave trough will sharpen as it moves across the eastern Great
Lakes Wednesday. Southwest flow will strengthen ahead of an
approaching cold front Wednesday morning. Strong jet dynamics and
increased moisture will produce rain and snow showers ahead of the
cold front from Lake Erie to the Eastern Lake Ontario region. The
front will cross the region quickly while the surface low tracks
across the Ottawa Valley into the North Country Wednesday. These
showers will quickly move across Western NY as lake instability is
marginal with 850mb temperatures at -5 C across the region, not
enough for a lake response. The best forcing will track across the
Eastern Lake Ontario region and into the Adirondacks Wednesday into
Wednesday night. Westerly winds behind the front will also add an
upslope component across the Tug Hill and western Dacks and lead
to additional precipitation across the region. Expect all snow on
the Tug Hill and western Adirondacks.

Surface temperatures will be marginal with highs climbing into the
upper 30s to low 40s across the lower elevations Wednesday. Cooler
conditions will exist on the higher terrain including the Tug Hill
Plateau and western Adirondacks. Rain and snow showers are expected
across the lower elevations below 1500 feet with little to no
accumulation. Colder air will filter across the North Country
Wednesday night into Thursday with 850mb temperatures falling to -
8C. This will allow a lake response to set-up behind the main system
east of Lake Ontario. Snow is likely across the Tug Hill region and
western Adirondacks Wednesday through Thursday. Total snowfall
accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are possible during this time. High
temperatures will reach the upper 30s to low 40s across western NY
and the lower elevations east of Lake Ontario including Watertown,
NY. Little to no snow accumulation is expected at lower elevations.

Dry conditions expected into Thursday night as high pressure moves
into the region. Overnight lows will fall into the upper 20s to low
30s.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Well above normal temperatures "LIKELY" to start this period, then
turning colder with the potential for some snow the latter half of
the weekend into Monday.

First and foremost, sfc high pressure along the Mid-Atlantic will help
to pump up a much warmer airmass across the region on Friday. It
will also, with the axis of the mid-level ridge overhead, maintain
fair and dry weather all day. Meanwhile, a complex system will begin
to take shape over the Central U.S. by Friday night. While there
still remains quite a bit of uncertainty, it does appear that
chances for "RAIN" showers will increase overnight as we head into
Saturday. The sfc low with this system, then tracks past the Lower
Lakes to our west on Sunday, while deepening to ~997-995mb. However,
there isn't an overly strong LLJ (~+40Knots), but there is a tight
pressure gradient and a rapid pressure rise with its passage. The
most likely scenario will be some gusty winds, mainly following the
cold front on Sunday. Right now, expect some wind gusts in excess of
+40 mph, if the current model trends hold. Additionally, the brisk
southwest flow in the wake of the front will then usher in a much
colder air mass. Any residual rain showers will then likely turn
over to snow. Too early to say if there will be a decent lake
response this far out, stay tuned.

.AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Persistent northwest flow will keep lake effect clouds and a few
light snow showers/flurries southeast of the lakes through daybreak
before the clouds begin to break up by afternoon. Mostly MVFR cigs
though some IFR cigs will occur over Southern Tier, including JHW.
Conditions will turn VFR this afternoon with partial clearing.

Outlook...

Wednesday and Thursday....Mainly VFR. A chance of rain or snow
showers.
Friday and Saturday...VFR.

Winds on the lakes should maintain a gentle to moderate breeze
through this morning. Winds will maintain a north to northwesterly
direction, shifting to the west through the day Tuesday. A
tightening pressure gradient over the region will cause winds to
increase starting this afternoon.
