.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will bring a return to dry weather through tonight. A
strong cold front will cross the region Sunday with rain changing to
snow late over high terrain of western New York. Cold windy wintry
weather is expected Sunday night into Monday night with accumulating
lake effect snow along with some blowing snow. This early taste of
winter will not last though with a significant warm up likely mid to
late week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Though there will be lake clouds to the eastern side of Lake
Erie and Lake Ontario this afternoon, expect dry weather to
persist into tonight as upper level ridging crosses lower Great
Lakes and New England and sfc high drifts offshore of New
England by late today. Highs will reach the mid to upper 40s,
but will only get to around 40F across the higher terrain east
of Lake Ontario. South winds will be light today, but then will
ramp up tonight ahead of strong cold front slicing across the
western Great Lakes. Most of the night should be mostly clear
with just some high clouds increasing late ahead of the cold
front and associated swath of rain that moves in on Sunday
morning. Lows tonight will be in the mid to upper 30s, though
coldest spots will drop just below freezing.

Late tonight, attention will be focusing on very strong upper trough
driving across the Upper Great Lakes along with associated cold
front. The upper trough and its significant 12 height falls over
250m digs right across western NY on Sunday. Such a strong system
means a couple things for our weather. First, expect widespread rain
to spread west to east across the region mid morning through the
afternoon. Cold front swings across late afternoon, so rain will
quickly turn to snow (mainly over higher terrain of western NY) due
to strong deep cold air advection with the strong system (H85 temps
dropping from +5c at 12z to -5c at 00z). A slushy coating of snow is
expected over highest elevations of western Southern Tier to the
hills of southern Erie and Wyoming county by Sunday evening.  Other
aspect of this system will be strong and gusty winds. SW winds ahead
of the cold front will be strong with 40-50 kts shown in the
forecast soundings. Mixing of the winds will be restricted by
saturated profile with widespread rain but could easily see 25-35
mph winds even during the rain. Once the cold front arrives along
with PV intrusion, expect gusts late Sunday afternoon to reach over
40 mph, especially close to Lake Erie. We'll just be starting our
this brief bout of wintry type weather with more to come on Sunday
night.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
***Accumulating lake snows likely during this period***

Strong cold front will cross the eastern Great Lakes ushering in a
much colder air mass to the region. Lake snows will then develop
quickly as the axis of a sharp mid-level shortwave trough enters
Western NY early Sunday night. Deep moisture wrapping in across the
region and increasing over-water instability will likely send lake
equilibrium levels/inversion heights north of 15K feet overnight.
This should result in a modest lake response, but with NW'erly wind
flow (short fetch) and strong winds aloft, accumulations will likely
be somewhat limited off the lakes. With that said, any upstream
connections off Lake Huron and Georgian Bay will aid in some
locations receiving a boost snowfall accumulation totals. Right now,
still looking for several inches of snow Sunday night over the
western Southern Tier and also the vcnty of the Tug Hill east of
Lake Ontario. With strong NW'erly flow, blowing snow will
potentially become an issue as temps fall into the 20s overnight.
Will continue to mention lake snow potential and blowing snow in the
HWO. Adding to the wintry feel will be wind chill values to start
the day Monday in the teens and lower 20s.

Monday, lake effect snows will still be around, but the mid-level
trough shifts east and brief ridging aloft moves across the region.
As it does so, synoptic moisture depletes and some subsidence/drying
will likely diminish intensity of lake snows compared to Sunday
night. Does appear lake effect snows will flare up again Monday
night as another shortwave drops thorugh the NW'erly flow aloft,
this time lake snows will focus mostly over Tug Hill closer to the
passing trough and cold pool aloft.

Tuesday, lake snows will weaken and diminish early as ridging builds
in aloft and at the surface. Loss of remaining synoptic moisture and
a lower subsidence inversion should gradually put an end to any
remain lake snows. This should be the last day of chilly conditions
too, as a major warm up looks more and more likely coming for the
rest of the week. Expect highs Tuesday in the 30s east of Lake
Ontario to the low and mid 40s elsewhere.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Dry with a significant warming trend for the rest of the week.

Sharp upper trough from Baffin Bay to Newfoundland quickly lifts
north by Wednesday as zonal flow takes charge across the lower 48.
Blended guidance looked fine, but increased highs late in the week
toward the highest end of guidance as pattern quickly breaks from
climo. Highs will reach upper 50s to near 60F on Wednesday and well
into the 60s Thursday and Friday. Will also become breezy with area
in tighter pressure gradient between general lower pressure over
south central Canada and high pressure over the eastern Atlantic.

.AVIATION /15Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Lake effect stratus will persist into this afternoon at JHW and ART.
CIGS will mainly be MVFR to lower VFR. Any clouds eventually scatter
out this afternoon into this evening with just high clouds spilling
in ahead of system that arrives on Sunday. A southerly breeze will
begin to increase tonight with gusts over 20 kts toward daybreak on
Sunday.

Outlook...

Sunday...Becoming very windy. VFR/MVFR with rain spreading from west
to east, then changing to snow over higher terrain across western NY
late Sunday afternoon.
Sunday night through Tuesday...MVFR/IFR possible in lake effect
snow showers southeast of the lakes.
Wednesday...VFR.

High pressure will cross the region today resulting in light winds
and minimal wave action. A cold front approaches the region late tonight
with strengthening southwesterly flow. Small Craft Advisories have been
issued for much of the area from tonight and Sunday morning through
Tuesday. In addition, could see gale gusts Sunday through Sunday night.
