.SYNOPSIS...
A weak storm system will bring a widespread fresh covering of snow
to the region tonight and tomorrow, with greatest snow totals east
of the lake where the widespread snow will end as minor lake effect
snow. A seasonable airmass will remain across the region through
Tuesday before a brief colder period of air arrives on Wednesday
along with snow showers. Temperatures will then take a turn to the
milder side to close out the week with much above normal warmth
expected for Friday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
Northwest flow continues across the region this morning, and with
the influx of drier air along with the rising of the sun, lake
effect snow streamers are weakening. There are still streamers of
note across the upslope higher terrain of SW NYS...and a few
flurries across the Tug Hill. This activity will continue to wane
through the morning, with much of the region briefly dry for this
afternoon.

There will not be much of a break between systems, with snow from
the next system expected to reach far western New York around 7 p.m.
before spreading eastward tonight. The intersection of a the left
exit region of an incoming jet, and a mid-level trough provides high
forecast confidence in widespread light snow across the region. With
thermal profiles and surface temperatures colder than yesterday the
snow should have an easier time accumulating with a general 1
to 3 inches of snow expected tonight.

Latter portions of this event (late tonight and Monday) are a bit
more difficult. A rather robust surface trough will move through the
area late tonight and early Monday with a brisk WSW behind it.
Temperatures aloft will again be marginal for lake effect with 850mb
temperatures around -11C. As mesoscale guidance picks up on, a
significant portion of this event will be due to upsloping
although suspect model QPF is overdone. Even taking this into
account, advisory amounts in the 3 to 5 inch range cannot be
ruled out on the Tug Hill for Monday, with an additional 1 to 3
expected across higher terrain east of Lake Erie. It will also
be quite windy, with gusts of 30 to 35 mph potentially resulting
in areas of blowing and drifting snow on Monday. This will be
mitigated, to an extent, since surface temperatures will be near
freezing.

&&

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Monday night, the axis of the upper level trough that was over the
area Monday will continue to track northeast from northern NY, to
northern New England by Tuesday morning. As the trough tracks to the
northeast synoptic moisture will decrease and warm air advection
will increase bringing 850H temperatures to around -5C by Tuesday
morning. As a result any lake response off of the lakes, in
particular Lake Ontario, that is present on Monday night should
diminish through the night. This will all be occurring as an area of
high pressure over the Ohio Valley causes increased ridging over the
area through Monday night. Likely POPs will be in place for portions
of the North Country, where the combination of some lake enhancement
and general light snow from the trough will result in the higher POP
values for the early portion of the night. POPs will decrease to
chance by the middle of the night as conditions become less
favorable for the lake response. Snow accumulations east of Lake
Ontario should generally be around a half inch. The rest of the area
south of Lake Ontario should be mostly dry for Monday night. Lows
Monday night will be in the low 20s in the higher terrain and for
areas east of Lake Ontario, and in the mid to upper 20s for areas
south of Lake Ontario.

On Tuesday, the area can expect dry weather for the bulk of the day
as the surface high tracks just off the mid Atlantic coast through
the day. As the area of high pressure tracks off the coast, the
ridge over the area will give way to an upper level trough. As the
trough tracks across the eastern third of the country, an area of
low pressure will develop. The low pressure will develop near the
NC/VA coastal border on Tuesday afternoon, and strengthen as it
tracks northeast. This area of low pressure may have a precip shield
that expands just far enough northwest into the area that it may
cause some light precipitation late Tuesday. Another area of low
pressure, will track along the northern Great Lakes and to the
Ontario/Quebec border by Tuesday evening, dragging a cold front the
will extend south across the Great Lakes. This too may will also
bring the chance of some precip toward early Tuesday evening. With
that in mind, have chance POPs just into the forecast area along the
NY/PA border, and chance POPs just to the west of far WNY. Precip
that does occur with either/both of these systems will be a mix of
rain and snow at the lower elevations and all snow in the higher
elevations. Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 30s on
Tuesday.

For Tuesday night, the area of low pressure over the Great Lakes
will track east toward northern New England by Wednesday morning. As
this system tracks from west to east its associated cold front will
track across the area late Tuesday evening into early Wednesday
morning. This will provide the chance for widespread snow showers
along with some lake enhance snow off of both lakes, before lake
effect potentially takes over completely. This will occur as cold
air advection brings 850H temperatures down to around -10C to -12C
by Wednesday morning. Some disagreement among models is present as
to the amount of cold air available to advect from Canada, with the
Euro having 850H temps around 3C warmer than the GFS. Synoptic
moisture still remains as the trough axis tracks northeast of the
area. With 850H temperatures still marginal through the early
morning for a lake response and winds shifting behind the front,
went with chance POPs for the area, with likely POPs southeast of
Lake Erie as cold air advection drops temperatures there a bit
quicker. Snow amounts for Tuesday night are expected around an inch
southeast of the lakes, where lake enhancement and then lake effect
can set up through the early morning. Low temperatures on Tuesday
night will be in the low to mid 20s across the area.

For Wednesday, cold air advection will continue through the day, with
850H temps dropping to -15C to -20C. 850H temps this cold would be
some of the coldest temps aloft that the area has experienced in
some time, and has not occurred as frequently as of this season as a
whole. Disagreement among models are still present for 850H temps
with a spread of around 5C between the ECMWF and the GFS, with the
GFS being the colder solution. Lake effect snow is expected across
the area on Wednesday with synoptic moisture still available through
the first part of the day and the cold temps aloft. With a west-
northwest flow the areas that can expect the best chance of Lake
effect snow will be southeast of both lakes where likely POPs are in
place. An area of high pressure will track from the Midwest on
Wednesday morning to the Ohio Valley and Western PA by Wednesday
evening, this will cause increased ridging through the day on
Wednesday from west to east. As ridging increases, decreasing
moisture and lowering equilibrium heights will slowly start to
suppress the lake response, first off of Lake Erie. By the end of
the day on Wednesday, ridging may not be strong enough just yet to
decrease the lake response off of Lake Ontario. High temperatures on
Wednesday will be in the mid 20s to near 30.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Continued ridging over the area Wednesday night as an area of high
pressure settles over the area will further reduce the potential for
a lake response off of Lake Ontario. There will be a chance of snow
showers through the evening for areas southeast of Lake Ontario
before completely tapering off. Warm air advection Wednesday night
will increase the 850H temperature by nearly 10 degrees Celsius from
around -15C to -5C over a 12 hour period.

The area of high pressure will center over the region for Thursday
providing dry conditions for most of the day with warming
temperatures. Rain potential increases late Thursday ahead of the
next cold front.

The area of high pressure will track east out of the region and give
way to an area of low pressure that will track from the Upper
Midwest on Thursday afternoon and track to central Quebec by
Saturday morning. A trailing cold front will cross the area on
Friday evening, but ahead of this front, precipitation, starting as
snow initially and changing to rain will overspread the area with
increasing POPs through Thursday night. Rain showers are likely for
Friday as the front slowly approaches and crosses the area Friday
evening.

For Saturday, an area of high pressure over central Canada starts to
track toward the Great Lakes as the area of low pressure and cold
front track east out of the area. This is where the GFS and the
ECMWF start to have some significant disagreement. The GFS clears
out for the rest of the weekend and the ECMWF has a large area of
low pressure develop over the southern Mississippi Valley and tracks
it northeast to the area for Sunday.

.AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
A mix of MVFR and VFR ceilings will continue this afternoon as cool,
northwest flow spreads across the eastern Great Lakes. Light lake
effect snow showers continue across portions of western NY, mainly
southeast of Lake Erie this afternoon. Besides minor reductions in
visibility at KJHW, they should continue to wane this afternoon.

The next system will move across the Upper Great Lakes tonight while
a cold front tracks across western and north central NY tonight
through Monday morning. Winds will become more southerly ahead of
the front tonight. A widespread light snowfall will spread across
western NY this evening producing mainly MVFR ceilings and IFR
visibility. Ceilings may fall to IFR at times with the best chance
at KJHW tonight. Winds will dramatically increase early Monday
morning across western NY and by Monday afternoon at KART. Gusty
winds may produce areas of blowing and drifting snow.

Outlook...

Monday night through Wednesday...MVFR to IFR possible at times in
periods of light snow and snow showers.
Thursday...Mainly VFR.
Thursday night through Friday...MVFR to IFR possible with rain and snow.

.MARINE...
Northwesterly flow this morning with small craft headlines for
all of the nearshores. Winds will drop off rather quickly late
morning and early this afternoon, which will allow for a brief
headline-free period. A sharp surface trough and associated
frontal system will move through late tonight into Monday and
winds will pick up behind this. 925 mb near 40 knots and
relatively warm lake temperatures which should help mix winds
aloft to the lake surface so have issued a Gale Watch for
eastern portions of Lake Ontario. This will be close call with
either strong small craft or low- end gale conditions Monday
afternoon across eastern Lake Ontario, and small craft
headlines are likely to be needed elsewhere.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Westerly winds will approach 35 knots on the eastern end of Lake
Ontario which will result in significant wave action. This
combined with high water levels may result in lakeshore flooding
along the immediate Lake Ontario shoreline in Jefferson and
northern portions of Oswego County. A Lakeshore Flood Watch was
issued for these locations.
