.SHORT TERM (Now through Friday night): A vigorous upper-level
trough will swing through the Southern Plains and across North Texas
Friday night into Saturday. This will result in a strengthening
pressure gradient Friday afternoon as a surface low deepen across
West Texas and a strong high builds off the Carolina coast. Very
strong southerly flow will develop early Friday morning and continue
through the early evening. Models consistently show a low-level jet
centering just off the lower Texas coast, with winds at 45 to 60kts.
This will result in sustained winds at the surface of 30 to 40mph
with frequent gusts up to 50mph across the eastern half of Deep
South Texas. The highest wind speeds will be along Interstate 69-E
with wind gusts possibly exceeding 50mph at times. A Wind Advisory
will be issued shortly for Hidalgo, Brooks, Cameron, Willacy and
Kenedy counties from 9 AM CST Friday through 8 PM CST.
As the trough moves eastward, it will bring an associated cold front
through Deep South Texas early Saturday morning, with strengthening
northwest winds and a brief shot of showers or thunderstorms. Model
soundings indicate a strong capping inversion, limiting the severe
weather threat. However, the cap does erode a bit with the
convergence along the front, so some thunderstorms will be possible
further north and east, and more likely offshore.
.LONG TERM (Saturday through Thursday): Intense southern track
500mb low pressure trough will be passing east of Texas Saturday
pushing a potent, but not cold, Front off the Lower TX Coast prior
to sunrise Saturday. A drier and windy air mass will be the main
elements in wake of this front with another round of wind
advisories and Elevated fire danger statements likely to be
issued. After this major trough moves east the progressive short
wavelength flow shifts farther to the north as models suggest the
subtropical ridge edging westward into the Gulf of Mexico. This
should result in a tranquil weather pattern for Deep South Texas
through at least Wednesday. Next front, possibly by the end of
forecast period (Thursday) is a bit uncertain with the storm track
well north of the Texas.
Models are in good agreement with 40-50kt NW jet moving through
Texas in wake of the strong mid-level trough. Dry air and downward
omega should allow for partial mixing of the stronger winds to the
surface. Peak time for the strongest wind is Saturday morning
through early afternoon when wind advisories may be necessary.
Timing of the lowest RH and peak wind will be an issue for elevated
fire danger keeping conditions below critical levels at this time.
Model temperatures and pop guidance is in fair agreement through the
period with only minor separation by the end of the forecast period.
Overall, cool nights and mild days through the weekend with a
gradual warming through next week. GFS is slightly cooler then EC
so a blend of the two suffices for now. Rain chances remain low
with some coastal showers working inland Tuesday night into
Wednesday as southerly flow becomes better established.

.MARINE:(Now through Friday night): Strong southerly winds will
result in hazardous marine conditions through this evening and
continuing overnight offshore, as seas remain elevated at 7 to 9
feet. As a low-level jet strengthens on Friday morning, southerly
winds will increase and marine conditions will become dangerous
through the day. A Gale Warning has been issued for all lower Texas
coastal waters starting at 9 AM CST Friday and continuing through
the evening. A cold front will move through early Saturday morning,
bringing an increase of showers and thunderstorms, some of which may
result in locally higher winds. With the frontal passage, northwest
winds will increase, with possible Gale-force gusts once again.
Mariners are encourage to postpone all activities, especially those
with small craft.
(Saturday through Tuesday): Cold front Friday night/Saturday
night will usher in strong northwest flow with another round of
Small Craft Advisories and possible Gale conditions Saturday morning
morning and early afternoon. High pressure builds over the region
Sat night and Sunday with rapidly improving conditions. As the
ridge gradual moves east fair marine weather persist with a return
of southeast winds.
