.AVIATION...Satellite imagery shows mostly high clouds passing
over the Rio Grande Valley early this morning. VFR conditions are
expected to continue until about midday today when showers and
thunderstorms form along the sea breeze and bring intermittent
MVFR conditions this afternoon. Rain chances will increase through
the period as Tropical Storm Hanna nears the lower Texas coast.
Winds will start off from the north and gradually shift easterly
and then southerly tonight, but will generally remain light
through the period, except for any locally moderate gusts in
shower or thunderstorm activity.

..TROPICAL STORM HANNA MOVING WEST TOWARD SATURDAY LANDFALL NEAR
BAFFIN BAY...
..TROPICAL STORM WARNINGS IN EFFECT...

SHORT TERM (Now through Saturday): The main concern for the
short term period continues to be the potential impacts from
Tropical Storm Hanna (upgraded overnight from Tropical Depression
8). As of 10 PM CDT on Thursday, TS Hanna was located in the
northwestern Gulf near latitude 26.2 North, longitude 91.4 West
and is expected to move toward the west-northwest and make
landfall somewhere along the South Texas coast midday Saturday
with a maximum intensity around 55 knots or just over 60 mph. The
forecasted track of Hanna has trended southward over the last
couple of NHC advisory packages, matching the recent model trends,
and effectively increasing the potential impacts across Deep
South Texas. The main impact continues to be heavy rain and flash
flooding as this slow moving system brings ample tropical moisture
to our area. Precipitable water values near 2.7 inches on
Saturday, putting expected peak rainfall amounts around 4 to 8
inches, with isolated amounts up to 12 inches possible. With the
expected rainfall, the Weather Prediction Center has included the
coastal areas in a marginal risk for excessive rainfall today,
and a slight and moderate risk for excessive rainfall on Saturday
when we're expecting Hanna to move inland. Tropical-Storm-force
winds are also expected to impact most of Deep South Texas where
Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect as the system moves inland
on Saturday. Follow the latest updates from the National Hurricane
Center as adjustments to the track are made.

Have held off on issuing a Flash Flood Watch in this forecast
package after collaborating with our neighboring NWS office, but
one will likely be issued during the next package as confidence
increases.

Swell across the coastal waters from Tropical Storm Hanna may
produce minor coastal flooding beginning late this afternoon,
with water rising up to or near the dunes, especially on narrow
beaches. Current water levels at SPI Brazos Santiago continue to
show levels about a foot above predicted tides. Thus, a Coastal
Flood Advisory may be needed later today.

Otherwise, temperatures are expected to be near seasonal normal
today with light northerly winds shifting northeasterly this
afternoon. Rain chances will increase across the Gulf waters and
our eastern counties today as distant bands from TS Hanna along
with any sea breeze initiation move westward across our area. As
can be expected, temperatures will be significantly cooler on
Saturday with the widespread shower and thunderstorm activity.

LONG TERM (Saturday Night through Thursday): With Hanna making
landfall along the northern portion of the lower Texas Coast on
Saturday, concerns have increased for areas of heavy rainfall and
flash flooding. These concerns will heighten on Saturday, but
will also continue into Saturday night. Two to four inches of
rain will be possible Saturday night, adding on to any rain
received earlier. No flash flood watches have yet been posted, as
comparisons with flash flood guidance continue, but the potential
remains. In addition, in the area where Hanna makes landfall,
strong winds of 35 to 45 mph with gusts to 55 mph will be
possible.

After making landfall, Hanna will turn west southwest and curve
across the northern tier of deep South Texas before crossing the
Rio Grande into Northeast Mexico. Hanna will weaken quickly after
she makes landfall, however, with Saturday night being the worst
period of the long term, and with improving conditions on Sunday.
Elevated shower and thunderstorm chances will remain in the area
through the weekend and into early next week, however the heavy
rainfall threat should taper off after Sunday for eastern
sections, though lingering for western sections into Monday.
Conditions will remain unsettled for much of the remainder of the
long term in the aftermath of Hanna. A weakness will remain in
the mid levels with ample tropical moisture persisting into the
middle of the week. High temperatures will be held down to around
90 to 95 for most areas, but ample moisture will help maintain
elevated heat index values to 100 degrees or higher. Temperatures
and heat index values will trend slowly higher during the week.

MARINE:

Now through Saturday: With a weak pressure gradient in place,
winds will remain light through this evening, but seas will
increase overnight as swell from Tropical Storm Hanna reaches the
lower Texas coastal waters. A Tropical Storm Warning is currently
in effect over all of the lower Texas coastal waters, with winds
and seas expected to rapidly deteriorate late tonight into
Saturday. In addition, showers and thunderstorms will increase
through the period, which will add to the hazardous conditions.
Follow the latest updates on Tropical Storm Hanna from the
National Hurricane Center.

Saturday Night through Tuesday...Tropical storm conditions may
still be ongoing Saturday night. High seas will be developed
across the northern marine areas. However, as Hanna continues
farther west and moves inland, conditions will rapidly improve.
Small craft should exercise conditions will be possible on Sunday,
with light to moderate southeast winds and low to moderate seas
on Monday and Tuesday.
