Across interior southern New England, areas snow will continue to
diminish in intensity and coverage, with additional snowfall up to
an inch during this afternoon. 

Along east coastal Massachusetts, light to moderate snowfall will
continue over the next several hours. An additional 1 to 3 inches
of snow is possible with reduced visibility. Poor visibility, 
snow covered and icy roads will be dangerous. If you must travel,
slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination safely.

.SYNOPSIS...
Tuesday and Wednesday are quiet and cold. Afternoon wind chill
values inland are in the teens and lower 20s at the coast.
A coastal storm may bring heavy snow, strong winds and coastal
flooding to the region Wednesday night into Thursday. High pressure
builds in for late in the workweek into the weekend. Colder than
average temperatures for late in the week begin to moderate by the
weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...

10 AM update...

Main update this morning was to expand the Winter Storm Watch to
the rest of Massachusetts. The forecast for today is on track.

Previous Discussion...

SPS for patchy black ice remains in effect through the morning
commute. Any leftover moisture from yesterday's precip event
would have frozen with any untreated such surfaces becoming
slippery.

Otherwise, large high pressure over WI beginning to ridge
eastward into Southern New England early this morning. It's a
fairly chilly start with temperatures in the mid 20s to low-mid
30s areawide, though northwest winds gusting to around 25 to 30
mph is making for wind chills in the upper teens to mid 20s!
Colder air aloft advecting into the region will offset full sun
today, and will also be fairly blustery today for most. However
gusts should subside as we move into the early-aftn hrs. Highs
today only top out in the upper 30s to near freezing, and the
wind chill will make it feel cooler than that.

Highlights...

* Patchy black ice possible for early Tuesday

A cold front moved through southern New England overnight and as
a result the temperatures continue to fall - and will continue
heading towards daybreak. Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island
have relatively higher dewpoints and as a result icy roads and
surfaces are possible - use caution heading out early this
morning. Otherwise, it's a quiet weather day, outside of a
breezy northwest wind that will occasionally gust to 20mph.
Clear and cool this afternoon as highs struggle to climb out of
the 30s and when you add in the wind it will feel like the teens
and lower 20s this afternoon.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...
A 1030mb high pressure remains in control for Tuesday night and
much of Wednesday. Decent radiational cooling will occur
overnight thanks to mostly clear skies and light winds -
guidance has much of the area in the teens with single digits
northwest of the Mass Pike. Don't expect much relief Wednesday
as the 925mb temperatures range between -5C and -10C across
southern New England during the afternoon. This will result in
temperatures in the low and middle 20s inland and the low 30s at
the coast. Clouds will increase late in the day ahead of a
coastal storm that could bring a few light snow showers across
southwestern Connecticut during the early evening hours - the
main event will arrive during the early morning hours the
following day.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Highlights...

* Winter Storm becoming likely Wed night/Thurs. Significant amounts
  of snow and gusty winds are possible. Uncertainty still exists on
  northern extent of heavy snow.

* Chilly Thurs night under high pressure and fresh snowpack.

* Gradual moderating trend with dry conditions rest of the week into
  the weekend.

Details...

Wednesday Night through Thursday:

We continue to monitor developments specific to the potential winter
storm which sets its sights on Southern New England Wednesday night
into a good part of Thursday. This system has the potential to bring
significant amounts of snow that could substantially hamper travel
for the overnight/Thurs AM commute, gusty ENE/NE winds, as well as
minor to lower-end moderate coastal flooding (see the Coastal
Flood section).

On the overnight suite of models and ensembles, a few things where
noted when it comes to changes. The ECMWF returned its QPF shield
back northward compared to its off-cycle 18z run. While the GFS,
which has steadfastly been on the southern side with much less QPF
north of the Mass Pike, did creep northward if ever so slightly
though it still remains on the southern envelope of deterministic
solutions. Because of this net-upward increase in QPF, snow
amounts were adjusted upward as well for most.

In terms of headlines, the adjustment in snow totals and after
collaboration with neighboring WFOs has resulted in the expansion of
the Winter Storm Watch to include the Boston-Worcester-Springfield
metro areas and a portion of the Berkshires. Though the overnight
models did show more QPF further to the north, there remains
significant enough uncertainty in snow amounts that we opted to hold
on Watches up to the Route-2/Merrimack Valley region. Portions of or
all of these areas may need to be considered for a Watch pending
trend in today's forecast QPF.

Big picture: a southern-stream shortwave trough expected to come off
the Southern Rockies into the south-central Plains later today will
begin to deamplify as it progresses into the central Appalachians
Wed nite, tapping into rich Gulf moisture as it does so. A double-
barreled low at sfc is set to cross into the waters south of Long
Island. A strong antecedent 1030+ mb anticyclone should be
associated with enough cold and dry air to force all-snow as a
precip type for all of SNE. Because the 500 mb feature is
deamplifying, the primary cyclone doesn't substantially deepen to
the extent that we typically see with coastal lows/Nor'Easters.
Something to watch especially over the next 24-hrs is how quickly
the 500 mb trough deamplifies, as a slower weakening (e.g.
GEM/ECMWF) may translate to an expanding QPF shield and also
potentially larger snow accumulations. I also note that, for the
most part, the strongest 850-700 mb jets and speed convergence for
potential frontogenetically forced bands looks to be more offshore,
which calls into some question where and how intense snowbands may
truly become outside of CSI/slantwise convective type rates. Those
details are still unclear at this point in time.

We're still about a couple of days away, and model guidance can and
will change between now and then. As mentioned, there are still a
number of uncertainties and unknowns that could shape final
outcomes. Adjustment in snow accumulations resulted in a swath of 8-
12" across much of CT, RI and into southeast MA and Cape Cod; at the
moment, it appears the best potential to achieve locally higher
amounts through banding is in the interior portion of this corridor.
Amounts then taper to the 7-10" neighborhood up to the Mass Pike and
the Boston suburbs. Further north from here, where amounts are
limited by less QPF (though a bit higher than yesterday's runs), new
forecast calls for 4-6".

Looks like the key period of greatest impact regionally is overnight
Wednesday into Thursday morning, when moderate to heavy snow will
combine with northeast winds gusting up to 35-40 mph especially for
areas along and south of the Mass Pike. It certainly could resemble
whiteout to near-blizzard conditions for a time overnight in this
area. System begins to pull away eastward on Thursday, with snow
bands likely trending more intermittent by midday and clearing from
west to east through Thursday afternoon/early night.

Will continue to refine the forecast as we start to look into
the mesoscale models and information gleaned from that suite of
guidance.

Thursday Night:

Conditions to trend toward cleanup/recovery in the Thursday night
period as the system pulls away. Large high pressure builds over SNE
Thurs night. With 925 mb temps around -6 to -10C and a likely fresh
snowpack, temperatures should really radiate quite well. Have
widespread lows in the low to mid teens, except mid upper teens to
mid 20s near the eastern MA coast.

Friday and Beyond:

Didn't spend as much time on this portion of the forecast given the
midweek storm system. Looks to be a generally quiet period, with a
weak or dry frontal passage around Sunday before high pressure
returns for Monday. Temperatures start off cooler than average, then
trend near to slightly above normal for Sunday/Monday.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Thursday:

Coastal low passing SE of Nantucket is expected to produce a
storm surge of around 2 feet with the early afternoon high tide
(11.3 FT MLLW at Boston and 4.0 FT MLLW at Nantucket Harbor), which
is expected to produce minor coastal flooding along E MA coast,
especially south of Boston to Nantucket where winds and seas will be
greater.  System is not forecast to deepen rapidly so N/NE winds
should not be strong enough (35-40kt) or seas have enough time to
build significantly (10-15 ft) to produce more significant impacts,
although strength of high pressure to our north could help
winds/seas get higher than currently expected.

Since we are still a few days away we still need to monitor
potential for a change in the track of the low as well as its
strength. A stronger system, or one that tracks closer to the
region, could produce lower-end moderate coastal flooding. That
would be a worst case scenario which is unlikely right now.

We do need to be concerned for minor beach erosion, which could
have more of an impact in more vulnerable locations such as Plum
Island.
