next week. The first week of June looks to be cooler than the
seasonal average and then unsettled by mid-week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM FRIDAY MORNING/...
420 PM update...

At 925 mb, a S-SW low level jet increasing to 35 kts overnight,
ensuring a continuation of high dewpoint, muggy air over the
region. Areas of locally dense fog will redevelop along the
south coast and spread north into RI, northern CT, and interior
southeast MA. In addition to areas of drizzle with the fog,
scattered light rain showers will dot the area, in association
with a weak lobe of vorticity moving through overnight. Some of
the mesoscale models show a band of moderate showers traversing
southern RI and southeast MA toward daybreak. Overnight lows
will be in the 60s, except for some upper 50s on the islands.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
Friday...

Very much like today, fog will slowly dissipate in southern
areas. Overcast low cloudiness will take most of the morning to
slowly break up with a few peeks of sunshine. The greatest
chances of seeing the sun will be in northeastern MA. High
temperatures will reach the mid 80s in northeast MA with upper
70s and lower 80s elsewhere away from the coast. It will be
quite muggy with afternoon dewpoints climbing to near 70 over
much of the interior. A few showers can't be ruled out. Winds
could gust to 15 to 25 mph.

Friday night...

A strong upper level trough will be advancing from the eastern
Great Lakes, with a 110+ kt 300 mb jet over NY state and a
surface cold front will be approaching from the west. This will
likely trigger strong to severe convection in the late
afternoon and early evening across eastern NY, where SPC has a
slight risk of severe thunderstorms for their Day 2 outlook. By
the time it reaches the western portion of our forecast area, it
will be closer to 8 to 10 PM, past the peak heating, and the
storms are expected to weaken. We will still need to watch for
locally heavy downpours and strong gusty winds in western MA and
possibly a portion of northern CT until around midnight. Lifted
indices are forecast to be negative across all of northern MA,
so cannot rule out a few thunderstorms maintaining themselves in
the Route 2 corridor. Otherwise, remnant showers should work
their way across the rest of the region later Friday night. The
actual surface cold front only enters a portion of southern New
England Friday night, so overnight low temperatures will still
be on the mild side...in the mid 60s...cooler on Cape Cod and
the islands.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The arrival of the cold front remains uncertain as the models are
still in disagreement. The GFS is a bit more progressive with
the arrival of the front Friday night and clearing the coast
before 12z Saturday. However, both the EURO and NAM have the
front arriving after 12z Saturday morning - allowing for showers
during the daylight hours. Ahead of the front there will an
area of enhanced instability with the potential for CAPE values
reaching 500 to 1,000 J/kg along with moderate bulk effective
shear. This may allow for some isolated strong storms; heavy
downpours are also possible given PWATs over 1.5 inches. We do
continue our warm trend ahead of the front. Temperatures at 800
mb range from 8 to 10 degrees Celsius and with that we should be
able to mix down to the upper 70s to 80 degrees.

Behind the front an area of high pressure builds in out of the
northwest, this will place us under a northerly flow. In the mid
levels temperatures are between -25 and -30 degrees Celsius at 500
mb. Sunday afternoon will see nearly seasonable temperatures with
afternoon highs in the lower 70s. Calm winds and clear skies on
Sunday night will allow us to radiatively cool into the 40s before
dawn on Monday morning.

Monday will be mostly dry and cool. The GFS indicates higher levels
of moisutre between 925 and 850 mb. An isolated afternoon shower or
two are possible.

On Tuesday high pressure continues to remain in control with partly
sunny skies - followed by increasing evening clouds. A shortwave
moves out of the Great Lakes Region during the predawn hours of
Wednesday giving our next hit of scattered rain. While there are
still disagreements with the models, the better greater chance for
rain looks to arrive early Thursday morning. PWATs on Thursday range
from 1.5 to 2.0 inches.

.AVIATION /20Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...

throughout the region. Widely scattered light rain showers. Best
chance of showers in CT and western MA. S-SW winds of 10 to 20 kt.

Overnight...Moderate to high confidence. MVFR lowering to IFR
conditions in the interior and LIFR conditions along the south
coast with areas of dense fog. Scattered light rain showers.
Areas of drizzle where it is foggy.

Friday...Moderate confidence. Early morning IFR improving to
MVFR over the interior and possibly to VFR in northeast MA.
Areas of fog and IFR may remain along the south coast into the
early afternoon. Scattered showers.

Friday night...Moderate confidence. MVFR becoming local IFR in
Scattered showers and TSRA. Best chance of TSRA in western MA
and northern CT, where locally heavy downpours and gusts to 40
kt possible. Local areas of fog.

Friday and Friday night...Moderate to high confidence.
Small Craft Advisories expanded to include the all southern
waters, Cape Cod Bay, and the eastern outer waters, but
excluding Boston Harbor, Narragansett Bay, and Massachusetts and
Ipswich Bays. SW winds will gust up to 25 kt and seas will
build up to 5 to 7 ft over the outer waters. Areas of fog with
reduced visibility. Scattered showers. An isolated thunderstorm
possible after midnight Friday night.
