.SYNOPSIS...

A warm front brings a period of showers very late tonight, but
they will be ending by early to mid morning Friday. A warmer and
more humid airmass overspreads the region on Friday, followed
by showers and thunderstorms late Friday afternoon and evening
along with the likelihood of some severe weather. Dry weather
returns this weekend with seasonably mild temperatures both
days. Clouds and showers may return Sunday night into early next
week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...

345 PM Update...

Dry weather will persist this evening, but we will see an
increase in mid/high level cloudiness as a warm front approaches
from the south.

This warm front will result in a period of showers overspreading
most locales after midnight. While most areas will see a period
of wet weather, the guidance disagrees a bit on the main axis
of rain. Based on model consensus, thinking the bulk of the rain
will be in western MA extending southeast into parts of CT/RI
and southeast MA. Brief heavy rain will be possible in these
locations and given a rapid change in stability indices, there
is a low risk for a rumble or two of thunder.

Low temps will mainly be in the upper 40s to the lower 50s, but
with steady or slowly rising temps after midnight.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...

Highlights...

* Severe weather anticipated between 3-10 PM Fri with the focus
  northwest of the Bos-Pvd corridor and especially interior MA

* Main concern will be damaging straight wind gusts along with
  hail and heavy rain/street flooding as secondary concerns

* An isolated tornado is possible across the interior

Details...

Friday and Friday night...

Lingering warm frontal showers will be exiting eastern New
England by early-mid morning Friday. Otherwise, expect dry
weather to dominate through mid afternoon with probably some
partial clearing. This should allow afternoon highs to reach in
the middle to upper 70s across most locations and perhaps near
80 in the CT River Valley. Dewpoints will climb into the upper
50s to the lower 60s, so there will be a bit of humidity in the
air. A frontal boundary will keep highs cooler across portions
of eastern MA and some locations along the immediate coast may
drop into the lower to middle 60s during the afternoon.

A frontal boundary will be hung up across parts of northern and
northeast MA Fri afternoon. Southwest of this front, a
moderately unstable airmass will develop with surface based
Cape values between 1-2 J/KG. We do not have a classic EML in
place, but mid level lapse rates are on the order of 6 to 6.5
C/KM which is not too bad for our standards. The biggest player
in this severe weather setup are strong forcing along with 40 to
50 knots of effective bulk shear. The SPC SREF indicates fairly
high probabilities of these thresholds being exceeded,
particularly across parts of interior southern New England. This
looks to be a rather late show on Friday, awaiting strong
shortwave energy; so initiation will likely be after 3 or 4 pm.
Given strong forcing and impressive jet dynamics, the main
concern is for the potential of straight line wind damage via
QLCS/Squall line formation especially across interior MA. Many
of this high resolution models show this potential too.

The main area of concern will be northwest of the Boston to
Providence corridor, where higher instability will exist and
storms will arrive earlier. This is especially true across
interior MA, where HREF indicates rather high values of updraft
helicity. This makes sense to because the strongest wind fields
are in this region as well. Depending on how much instability
develops, the risk is there for QLCS formation and associated
wind damage being the main threat. Large hail will be a
secondary concern, especially if any discrete cells develop
ahead of the main line. A tornado would also be possible if low
level helicity can be enhanced via QLCS formation or along the
boundary in northern Massachusetts.

Finally, torrential rainfall will be possible with the stronger
storms bringing the risk for urban and poor drainage street
flooding. The activity may push south of the Boston to
Providence corridor after 00z, but likely in a weakened form
with the later arrival and cooling marine layer. Nonetheless,
low risk for a strong storm or two surviving given strong jet
dynamics. Dry weather returns by daybreak Saturday behind the
cold front.

Saturday and Sunday...

By Saturday a drier post frontal airmass moves in on NW flow with
high pressure centered over New England. Model soundings show a well
mixed BL up to around 850 mb where temps will be around 6-7 C which
should support highs in the upper 60s...low 70s in the vicinity of
the CT valley. One fly in the ointment is the increasing likelihood
of a backdoor cold front sliding southeast into eastern MA as flow
around the high turns winds out of the NE/E. This may lead to the
day's highs occurring Saturday morning before dropping into the 50s
in eastern MA and perhaps as far east as Rhode Island.

Sunday high pressure slides east but remains in control keeping
things dry most of the day. Mid/upper cloudcover will be on the
increase as flow aloft becomes zonal and flow at the sfc becomes
southerly on the backside of the exiting high. High temperatures are
similar to (early) Saturday, if a bit cooler for western zones; in
the mid-upper 60s inland, 50s along the immediate coast. Rain
chances increase in western MA/CT by evening as our next system
approaches.

Sunday night through Wednesday...

So about that ridge in the extended period...the one that 24-72
hours ago was giving us hope about a substantial warm/dry period
next week. Unfortunately the trend is not our friend, that is unless
you're a fan of cool and wet weather. Starting Sunday night guidance
has begun to converge on a deepening mid level trough and sfc low
pressure digging into the mid Atlantic then and spinning in place
for a long while, becoming cutoff and lingering through at least mid
week. There is plenty of uncertainty in the details at this point,
including if and when this may phase with the tropical disturbance
moving up the east coast at some point. In any case, this will
direct a tap of moisture up into southern New England for the first
half of the week bringing a prolonged period of wet and cool
weather...maybe even some coastal issues, but fortunately
astronomical tides are low. High temps should be limited to the
upper 50s and 60s each day.

18z update ...

Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Tonight...Moderate to high confidence. VFR through midnight.
After midnight, batch of showers will overspread the region.
Brief heavy rain possible across interior MA/CT and RI with even
a low risk for a rumble or two of thunder. This will result in
conditions lowering to MVFR through 12z with localized IFR
conditions.

Friday and Friday night...Moderate confidence. Showers should be
exiting eastern MA by mid morning. Otherwise, MVFR-IFR
conditions should improve to MVFR to even VFR thresholds by late
morning or early afternoon. The exception will be along
portions of the immediate coast, where onshore flow may result
in IFR conditions with low clouds/fog flirting with the region
into the afternoon.

A cluster of strong to severe thunderstorms are anticipated
northwest of the Boston to Providence corridor and especially
in western/northern MA late Friday afternoon and evening.
Strong wind gusts with a secondary concern of hail are expected
with this activity roughly after 19z or 20z through about 2z or
3z. Brier IFR-LIFR conditions expected with this activity.
Southeast of the Boston to Providence corridor, some showers and
perhaps a few rumbles of thunder are expected after 00z
although in a weakened form. Improvement to VFR expected by
daybreak Saturday as cold front clears the region.
