.SYNOPSIS...
Weak high pressure moves off to the east tonight. A warm front
will spread light rain showers early Monday morning in the
interior. Scattered thunderstorms, some on the strong side, may
develop Monday afternoon especially for areas north and west of
Interstate 95. Dry weather is on tap for Tuesday and Wednesday,
but it will be a bit cool with near record lows Tuesday night.
Temperatures begin to warm up Thursday and especially Friday as
low pressure passes to our north, but there will be some
showers. Another low passes over the region next weekend with
more showers and possibly a backdoor frontal passage.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
1030 PM Update:

Fairly robust low-level jet sampled by the 00z Chatham sounding
with about 40 kts of SW flow just off the surface is leading to
continued gusty conditions across the South Coast, Cape Cod and
Islands and the adjacent coastal waters. Still expect lingering
gusts to 30-35 mph until about midnight per RAP-based BUFKIT
soundings, which is about when very low-level temperature
profiles trend more isothermal to thermally stable. So the only
real notable change was to boost wind gusts thru midnight
across these areas. Wind gust speeds will continue to decrease
through the night, however.

Otherwise, variable cloudiness (less south, more mid level type
clouds mainly north of the Mass Pike) should prevail for most of
the overnight. We'll then start to see the leading edge of warm
frontal clouds toward pre-dawn Monday in the far western
sections of CT and MA, with increasing chances for showers for
those same areas.

No changes to lows were made attm.

Previous discussion...

Shortwave ridge over New England will shift offshore to our east
tonight. This should maintain subsidence and dry weather over
Southern New England most of the night, but lift ahead of an
approaching warm front may generate clouds overnight and
possibly a stray shower toward morning.

West winds turn from the south overnight but remain light. Dew
points rise through the 30s to around 40. This should keep min
temps in the upper 30s and 40s.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...
Monday...

Midwest shortwave sweeps east to NY/PA by Monday morning, then
to Srn New England by evening. Cold pool with the shortwave
moves east as well, with -28C air at 500 mb about the time we
are experiencing the warm sector south of the warm front. Clouds
and warm advection suggest our mixing depths will be more
shallow, but still near 850 mb. Temps at 850mb will be about 2C,
which would support max sfc temps in the low 60s. Clouds may
suppress this a little, but expect a range in the mid 50s to low
60s.

The shortwave and its surface low pressure will move across the
region during the afternoon. This will generate sufficient lift
for showers. The steep temperature difference aloft... -28C at
500 mb and +2C at 850 which yields vertical totals of 30...
would support convection especially at the time of combined
maximum heating at the surface and maximum cooling aloft. The
forecast will thus feature scattered thunderstorms where CAPE
of 150 J/Kg is forecast, which is most places. While the numbers
show a chance everywhere, the best chance will be inland away
from the usual cooling/stabilizing of the springtime marine
flow...thus, west of I-495 in Central/Western MA and Northern
CT. Also, the cold temperatures aloft may allow small hail to
reach the surface.

Monday night...

Low pressure and associated cold front will move offshore early
followed by diminishing chance of showers/tstms. Expect clearing
skies overnight. West-northwest winds then follow and bring
drier/cooler air with dewpts in the mid 20s to mid 30s. Parts of
the Berkshire East Slopes have a chance at reaching 31-32
degrees late at night, while farther east the range will be in
the mid 30s to mid 40s. Min temps at BDL and ORH will, while
cool, will be several degrees above the low temp
records...details listed in the climatology section.

Based on these expected temperatures, a Freeze Watch has been
issued for the Western Franklin/Western Hampshire/Western
Hampden zones.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Highlights...

  possible backdoor cold front by Sunday.

Tuesday and Wednesday...

West to northwest flow aloft will result in dry weather, but it will
be a bit cool Tue into Wed. 925 mb temperatures on Tuesday will
be +3-4C, rising to +6C Wednesday. Expecting high temperatures
in the 50s Tue and upper 50s to lower 60s Wed. Daytimes will be
on the breezy side with gusts to 20-25 mph.

A strong shortwave trough/closed upper low, accompanied by a
cold pool of -35C at 500 mb, will rapidly swing across VT and
NH late Tue afternoon and off the coast Tue evening. Although
the environment will generally be moisture-starved, there is a
slight chance of a spot shower along the MA/NH border for a few
hours late Tue afternoon.

With clear skies Tuesday night and sustained winds becoming
less than 10 mph, we could approach record low temperatures in
the lower to mid 30s away from the coast. Not out of the
question to have a few upper 20s readings in northwest MA.
Freeze headlines may again be needed.

Thursday...

High pressure moves off the coast allowing milder mid level air to
overspread the region from the west. While the warm advection
pattern will allow an increase in mid/high level cloudiness from the
west during the afternoon, still expect enough sunshine to allow
high temps to recover well into the 60s in many locations. Dry
weather should persist through Thu afternoon.

Thursday night and Friday...

Low pressure will be passing to our northwest and north Thu
night and Fri, with a warm front in our vicinity. In addition, a
weak vorticity max will be moving across southern New England.
Showers are likely in this time frame. The good news is, though,
that we will warm up into the 70s on Friday as 925 mb temps jump
to +17C to +19C. Some models forecast a strong westerly low
level jet along the south coast Thu night, so will have to watch
for gusty winds there, if they can mix downward.

Saturday and Sunday...

Lower confidence forecast for next weekend. In general, another
low pressure system may be approaching from the west with
another warm front draped across the region. But as high
pressure builds to our north, the front turn southward/southwestward
as a backdoor cold front, especially by Sunday. For now, have
forecast highs in the mid 60s coast to lower 70s inland
Saturday, but cooling to the 50s east coast and lower to mid 60s
inland Sunday.

.AVIATION /06Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

06z TAF Update:

Rest of the Overnight: High confidence.

VFR ceilings for most, however trending low-VFR to MVFR
ceilings BDL/BAF around 10-12z with unrestricted warm-frontal
light -RA. SW winds become SSW/S 4-8 kt across the interior.
Stronger SW winds/gusts (10-15 kt, gusts up to 25 kt) across
the Cape terminals and ACK.

Monday: Moderate to high confidence.

Warm frontal showers move through the remainder of SNE between
12-17z with brief MVFR ceilings, ending sooner in the west and
later toward the eastern MA coast.

Should see ceilings lift to BKN-OVC VFR levels with a wind shift
to SW 10 kt gusts to 20 kt. As based lift, will be looking for
re-development of scattered low-topped thunderstorms after 17z
mainly from I-95 west. A few of these storms should become
strong and may become severe with hail, gusty thunderstorm
winds capable of localized turbulence, with brief sub-VFR
visbys. Best chance of storms seems to converge on the 17-23z
time frame with VCTS indicated from BDL to BOS N/W near vicinity
of upper low. It is still a question if storms make it all the
way to BOS, which is where confidence is lessened. Possible but
less certain/more conditional thunder threat for PVD, while
prospects for afternoon thunder for the Cape terminals looks
nil.

Monday Night: High confidence.

Any local sub-VFR ceilings mainly northern airports should
trend VFR before midnight for all terminals. Wind shift to
WNW/NW with increasing speeds to 10-15 kt and becoming gusty
(around 20-25 kt).

Tuesday: High confidence.

VFR conditions. Gusty NW winds with speeds 13-18 kt, gusts 25-30
kt by mid-morning.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence in TAF.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence in TAF.

1045 PM Update:

Though it is somewhat borderline/low-end, opted to extend the
Gale Warning a bit longer (until about 1 AM) across the
southern/southeastern outer waters, as available observations
continue to report gusts in the lower-gale category. These to
eventually be replaced with SCAs with expectation that gusts
will continue to subside around or shortly before 1 AM.

Only other changes were to convert gale warnings on the southern
near-shore areas to small craft advisories (Rhode Island Sound
eastward to Nantucket Sound) and to remove the SCA for Boston
Harbor.
