.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure brings dry and near seasonable conditions through
Wednesday. A coastal storm tracking southeast of New England
will bring a period of rain Wednesday night which may mix with
snow at times. Early morning showers Thursday will give way to a
drying trend along with seasonably cool temperatures into
Friday. Then another storm brings more rain Friday night which
may change to snow especially over the higher elevations.
Blustery and near record cold follow Saturday with scattered
rain and higher elevation snow showers. Then dry weather with
moderating temperatures follow Sunday. A cold front may bring
scattered showers Sunday night into Monday. Dry and cool weather
likely returns Tuesday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
145 AM update ...

Skies remained clear across all of southern New England as of
145 AM although some high level cloudiness was slowly
approaching from the southwest. Temperatures were in the mid 30s
to mid 40s across the area with light north to northeast winds.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
Wednesday should be mostly dry during the day but with increasing
cloudcover. At the mid and upper levels a deep trough digs into the
Ohio valley as the ridge amplifies over southern New England and
begins to shift offshore. Temperatures will cool a bit from today,
especially along the east coast where the switch to an onshore,
easterly flow will keep temps colder (in the low 50s as opposed to
upper 50s inland). At the same time downstream of that trough a sfc
low strengthens offshore of the mid Atlantic coast and moves east.
High pressure will keep the precip at bay through most of the day,
likely moving in in the late afternoon/evening. There remains some
uncertainty as to how far north rain will spread, depending on the
exact track of the low. For now will mention a chance of rain for
all of southern New England between 8 PM Wednesday and 8 AM
Thursday, but the axis of heavier precip where we could see a half
inch of rain will be over Cape Cod and the islands. Temperature
profiles support rain, though some novelty snow flakes may
materialize for an hour or two along the souther coast. 850 mb
temperature guidance has cooled a few degrees in the last 24 hours
down to -2 or -3C, while bufkit soundings show an isothermal layer
right around 0C just off the surface. Any chance for snow would be
under the heaviest rain (Cape/islands) where the rain itself may
allow temperatures to wet-bulb just low enough to support some brief
snow. No accumulation would be expected.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Highlights...

* Fri - dry start, possibly a wet finish. Cooler than normal

* Arctic blast with potential record breaking cold bringing March-
  like cold over the weekend with some accumulating snow possible

Details...

Thu/Thu night ... upper trough and coastal low may yield morning
rain over Cape and Islands followed by short wave ridging to follow
for the afternoon. This should promote a drying trend along with
some breaks of sunshine. NW flow aloft combined with 850 mb temps of
around +1C should support highs in the upper 50s to low 60s,
possibly mid 60s if enough sunshine develops in the afternoon.
Overall a fairly nice day. Could be a few showers Thu night as next
short wave sweeps across the area.

Fri ... should be a brief period of dry weather behind departing
short wave Thu night and approaching arctic low Friday night. Thus
much of Fri could turn out dry especially over RI and eastern MA
with showers possibly reaching western MA/CT by days end as arctic
front and wave approach. Morning sunshine likely giving way to
increasing afternoon clouds. WNW winds becoming SW so cooler south
coast. Otherwise highs 55-60.

Fri night/Saturday ... Arctic front approaches from the west with
wave development along the front. As expected at this time range
model differences on amplitude of wave and timing of development.
GFS is the quickest with development and farthest southeast with
frontal wave tracking over Nantucket early Sat. EC over RI/eastern
MA but its ensembles indicate an envelope of solutions ranging from
western Georges Bank westward into the Hudson valley of NY...yikes!
Given this lack of clustering difficult at this time range to say
much more than rain showers possibly changing over to snow showers
from west to east with accumulating snow possible WNW of surface low
track, provided development is rapid and south of our latitude.
Otherwise to little too late with greater risk of accumulating snow
across northern New England.

During the day Saturday arctic air overspreads the area with 850 mb
temps crashing down to about -8C by the end of the day! To put this
into context the coldest 850 mb temp on an observed CHH sounding in
the month of May is -9C! We will challenge that Sat evening and
again Sunday morning with models hovering around -8C/-9C.  Cold
cyclonic flow will result in lots of diurnal clouds Sat and
scattered rain/snow showers, also keeping highs only in the 40s,
which may come close to setting a record for daily low max temp. See
climate section below. Given this anomalous airmass derived temps
from a blend of NBM and the coldest guidance. Gusty WNW winds will
yield wind chills in the 30s Saturday! Oh yeah, the normal high
should be 62-68...jeez.

Sunday ... very cold start with mins Sat night in the upper 20s to
lower 30s, mid to upper 30s Cape Cod and Islands including city of
Boston. However it will feel even colder Sunday morning with gusty
WNW winds continuing. Although not as cold as Sat with 850 mb temps
rising from about -9C at 12z to -4C by 00z as polar low over the
maritimes continues lifting northeast allowing height rises over
southern New England. West winds ease during the afternoon and
coupled with at least some sunshine temps rising well into the 50s
should feel much better than Sat.

Monday/Tuesday ... Next short wave approaches Sun ngt/Mon and
associated cold front. Low risk of scattered showers during this
time with temps near or slightly cooler than normal Monday. Should
be post frontal Tue with dry weather but cooler temps.
