.SYNOPSIS...
Weak low pressure moves south of the region overnight with a
chance of light rain near the South Coast, Cape Cod, and the
Islands. Monday will be another mild day, although a cold front
will move through during the day with a few showers. Cooler and
dry weather will be in place for Tuesday and most of Wednesday.
Chances for showers and continued cool weather will be the rule
for the second half of the week, with the potential for a
stronger storm to impact the region late Friday and Saturday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
1 AM Update:

Cold front was pushing through SNE early this morning and
should be offshore by sunrise, bringing a wind shift to NW. High
clouds have spread over region and GOES-16 IFR probability
imagery indicates low clouds SE of Nantucket, but these should
remain offshore.

Convection moving through mid Atlantic will pivot toward SNE
early this morning as associated short waves moves off coast.
Northern edge of this activity should clip South Coast, Cape
Cod, and Islands per high-res guidance, but locations farther
north are expected to remain dry.

Overnight lows in upper 40s to mid 50s are on track.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...
As of 155 PM Sunday...

12z guidance still showing a similar scenario for the daytime.
Basically a fairly strong upper level shortwave will be moving
across the region during the day. At the same time, a surface
cold front will be cross the region, resulting in winds turning
northwest and getting a little gusty by mid-day (20-25mph).
Temperatures at 850mb will start the day in the 2-5C range, but
by late afternoon will drop to 0 to -2C. Roughly a 4C drop in 12
hours. Not a blockbuster front, but still enough to be notice
that it won't be as warm as it is today. With those 850mb
temperatures and some sunshine, we should see highs top out in
the upper 50s/low 60s west to mid 60s across the east where the
front will be latest to arrive.

Not a lot of low level moisture for the front and upper trough
to work with, but with early morning sunshine we will develop a
little bit of surface based instability. Looking at forecast
soundings, it appears the showers will be high based -- meaning
cloud bases will be around 5000 ft. With a good amount of dry
air below the clouds, that will allow rain falling from the
clouds to evaporate -- leading to cooling of air and gusty winds
to develop. All the hi-res models suggest that the best chances
for showers will be from the Berkshires across central MA and
then into east/southeast MA. Used a blend of guidance to show
the hourly PoPs. Chances of getting wet will only be 25-35%
across those regions. In other words, better chance of not
getting wet.

Any showers quickly diminish by late afternoon as the trough
axis moves offshore and any surface instability goes away.
Enough of a pressure gradient and cold air advection for Monday
night that we'll see a breeze keep up all night. Lows will be in
the 30s to lower 40s.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Big Picture...

Zonal flow across the USA midweek breaks down as an upper ridge
builds along the Pacific Coast, diverting the Pacific flow north
into Arctic Canada while the flow over the Eastern USA turns from
the north from Canada Arctic. One shortwave in the flow moves
off through the Maritimes Tuesday, while a second shortwave
sweeps through New England Wednesday/Thursday. The most
prominent feature is a closed 500-mb low moving south from the
Canadian Arctic midweek and across New England Friday/Saturday.

Contours at 500-mb are normally around 565 Dm in early May. For
the current forecast, the values midweek are below normal and
the late week values are well below normal... about 2-3 std dev
below normal. The GFS forecasts values in the mid 520s, and the
ECMWF forecasts 519! Per SPC sounding climo, the values
forecast for Saturday and lower/colder than anything experienced
here in May in 70 years. This will bear watching. Precipitable
water values are mostly at or below 0.5 inches, which is mostly
below normal values so no major rain is expected.

Confidence is moderate midweek, then trends to low by the end of the
week and weekend.

Daily Concerns...

Tuesday...

Surface low moves east of Nova Scotia early Tuesday, with the upper
shortwave and cold pool over the Gulf of Maine moving east. The cold
pool moisture is forecast to linger over Eastern MA for at least
part of the day, between 850 and 700 mb. So expect a period of
clouds in the east while western areas become mostly sunny. The
mixed layer should reach to at least 825 mb, aided by the cold pool
aloft. Temps in the layer are equiv to -1C at 850 mb, so expect
max temps in the mid to upper 50s, possibly around 60 in the CT
Valley. Winds in the mixed layer around 15-20 kt, so potential
gusts around 20 mph.

The moist layer diminishes Tuesday night as a weak ridge moves
overhead. So expect clearing or partial clearing. Dew points in
the upper 20s and 30s will allow min temps in the 30s and low 40s.

Wednesday-Wednesday night...

Shortwave over the Great Lakes Wed morning moves east, crossing New
England late Wednesday and early Thursday. Exit region of the upper
jet passes south of New England, but may be close enough to generate
some lift. Meanwhile cold pool advection will work to destabilize
the airmass during the afternoon. This should be enough to generate
at least widely scattered showers starting late Wednesday and
continuing through the night. Mixed layer temps Wednesday equiv to
0C to -2C supports max temps in the 50s.

Thursday through Sunday...

Arctic closed upper low spins south through Nrn Ontario, entering
the Northeast USA Thursday afternoon and lingering overhead through
at least Saturday night. Plenty of cold pool moisture to support
clouds part of this time period. We may squeeze out a couple of
sunny periods, perhaps Friday and Sunday, but this timing is low
confidence. Cold pool temps at 500 mb...the GFS says -34C, while the
ECMWF says -38C. Such cold temps aloft will encourage deep mixing,
reaching at least 800 mb and possibly 750 mb. Temperatures in this
layer suggest max temps in the 50s, possibly around 50. Winds in the
mixed layer Friday reach 35 kt, suggesting strong gusty WNW winds at
that time. Lesser winds Saturday and Sunday.
