Moderate to heavy rain early this morning diminishes to
scattered showers by afternoon. The threat for scattered showers
and even a rumble of thunder will continue into tonight as a
cold front crosses the region. Dry and compared to what we have
seen, warm weather follows for the weekend. An approaching low
pressure system may bring a few showers late Saturday night
into Monday, but temperatures should average near normal. Next
week is expected to feature mostly dry weather with temperatures
running a bit below normal early in the week.

1015AM Update...

** Possible isolated thunderstorms developing this afternoon
 over Western MA and CT **

Main change was to speed up the exit of the main precipitation
shield as the comma head approaches our area and is expected to
go right over S New England. As a result, we enter into a dry
slot but will have showers around. With partial clearing and the
warm sector, areas south of Route 2 and away from the coast
should get into the mid to upper 60s. Dew points are already in
the mid 50s for many locations and high-res guidance show dew pt
getting into the low 60s by early afternoon. With a cold pool
aloft and increasing instability, expect isolated thunderstorms
to develop in the afternoon with gusty winds and small hail,
especially over Western and Central MA as well as CT. Otherwise,
forecast remains generally on track.

720 AM Update...

No major changes to the forecast. Did increase the surface dew
points slightly based on the latest observations. Otherwise the
forecast remains on track.

330 AM Update...

Widespread moderate to heavy rain impacting most of the region
very early this morning and will be making its way into far eastern
MA over the next 1-2 hours. Rainfall rates were generally not
more than a quarter of an inch per hour, so no issues expected
other than typical ponding of water on roadways.

The core of low level jet will shift into eastern New England
towards 12z this morning. Stout inversion will keep the
strongest winds just off the deck. Still expect to see
southeast wind gusts between 30 and 40 mph through mid morning
across the far southeast New England coast. A few brief gusts
near 45 mph can not be ruled out across the Cape/Islands, but do
not see the need for any wind advisories at this point. These
winds will diminish later this morning and afternoon as the low
level jet shifts east of the region.

The widespread soaking rain will come to an end between 8 am
and noon from west to east. This in response to the core of the
low level jet and deeper moisture/forcing shifting east of the
region. That being said, we are still expecting scattered
showers through the afternoon with an abundance of clouds. The
focus of the scattered showers will shift to interior southern
New England during the mid to late afternoon. This in response
to strong shortwave energy/cold pool aloft moving in from the
west. This will steepen mid level lapse rates resulting in a few
hundred J/KG of cape. Therefore, a few embedded t-storms are
possible later this afternoon/evening across interior MA and
CT. Given cold pool aloft, there is a low risk that if a few
storms develop they may contain pea size hail.

As for high temperatures today, surface low pressure will slowly
lift across our region. This will allow much of the region to
warm sector this afternoon with temps rising well into the 60s,
despite lots of clouds. Dewpoints in the 50s will add a bit of
humidity to the air as well. The exception to this will be
areas along the coast and north of route 2, which will struggle
to warm sector. This may result in areas of fog into part of the
afternoon, but many of these locales may eventually approach or break
60 late in the day.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 AM SATURDAY/...
Tonight...

Strong upper level energy and associated surface cold front
will cross the region tonight. Steep mid level lapse rates will
allow scattered showers and perhaps isolated thunder across
interior southern New England, to survive their way into eastern
MA and RI late tonight. Certainly not a washout, but given
vigorous shortwave energy do expect to see scattered showers
persist with perhaps even a rumble or two of thunder until the
front clears the region.

The other thing will have to watch tonight is for areas of fog
this evening across the southeast New England coast until the
cold front crosses the region. Drier air will work into behind
the front and expect low temps in the 40s to near 50 by daybreak
Saturday.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Highlights

* Dry and mild on Saturday

* The warm temperatures persist on Sunday, but there could
  be some isolated showers as a cold front slides through.

* Cooler on Monday and not out of the question there are a few
  showers around, but should be dry across much of the region. The
  dry weather persists on Tuesday.

Details...

Saturday...

A ridge axis will build from the eastern Great Lakes into New
England. A surface high will build in and bring the region dry and
quiet weather on Saturday.

Increased high temperatures on Saturday as it looks like a good
scenario for downsloping. This is due to 925 hPa winds that will be
shifting from the northwest to the west through the day. This
advects +10 to +12 degree Celsius air in at 925 hPa. Upped
temperatures toward the 95th percentile of guidance. This yields
highs ranging from the low 60s to the low 70s.

Have also increased sky cover toward the NAMNest guidance. Aloft at
500 hPa temperatures are in the -15 to -20 degree Celsius range,
this coupled with nearly adiabatic lapse rates in the boundary layer
will result in fair weather cumulus developing. The NAMNest tends to
do well in this type of situations. It will be a bit breezy with
gusts of 20 to 25 mph due to the good mixing within the boundary
layer.

Saturday night through Monday...

The ridge axis and surface high slide offshore late on Saturday
through Sunday. A trough will lift across Ontario into far western
portions of Quebec. At the surface low pressure will slide into
northern New England/southern Quebec. The cold front associated with
this system will slide through.

This front looks fairly weak based on the latest forecast guidance
and models have backed away from this trough interacting with some
sort of thunderstorm complex sliding across the Ohio River Valley.
This will bring increasing cloud cover on Sunday. Anticipating a mix
of sunshine and clouds. With the front sliding through there will be
an opportunity for isolated showers.

Bumped up high temperatures a bit on Sunday as flow at 925 hPa will
be west to northwest during. This result in some downsloping. High
temperatures range from the mid 50s to the mid 70s. The highest
readings will be found across the interior.

Another wave digs in quickly behind the shortwave lifting out of the
region. This will move into New England on Monday, and keep the
region under cyclonic flow. The wave nearby in combination with day
time heating could bring a few showers, but think most of the region
will remain dry. Temperatures trending downward as northwesterly air
aloft advects cooler air in. Highs on Monday range from the mid 50s
to the mid 60s.

Tuesday through Thursday...

Confidence in the forecast lowers at this point in time as models
significantly diverge. Does appear that conditions will be drier on
Tuesday with some mid level ridging in place. Uncertain on the
expected weather on Wednesday and Thursday due to large differences
amongst guidance. Have kept the NBM guidance due to these
differences.

Highs in this period will generally be in the 50s. Low temperatures
range from the mid 30s to the low 40s.

1430Z discussion...

Today...Moderate confidence.

Heavy rain gradually coming to an end from west to east this
morning. Scattered rain showers may linger as low pressure lifts
in. Do think there will be a period of no precipitation per the
last couple of runs of the HRRR guidance. Expecting MVFR to IFR
conditions with spotty LIFR. Best shot for LIFR is across
coastal locations and ORH, the latter thanks to its higher
elevation at 1000 ft. Strong low level jet sliding through
which will bring LLWS initially to eastern locations. The low
level jet slides offshore by mid morning and should bring an end
to the LLWS concerns. SE winds of 25 to 35 kts along the
coastal plain. Winds gradually diminishing and becoming
southerly and eventually shifting to a westerly direction.

Scattered showers this afternoon with an isolated thunderstorm
or two, which may linger into the evening. Best shot for this
activity is across the interior. IFR to LIFR conditions
lingering with low clouds and fog across coastal areas.

Tonight...Moderate to high confidence.

Scattered showers and perhaps an isolated t-storm or two across
the interior this evening. This activity may survive into
eastern MA/RI overnight. Otherwise, conditions will improve to
VFR in most locations during the evening. However, low end MVFR-
IFR conditions in low clouds and fog patches will persist for
most of the overnight hours across the far southeast New England
coast.

.MARINE...
Today...Moderate to high confidence. Strong southeast LLJ will
be kept somewhat at bay given stout inversion. Nonetheless,
expect SE wind gusts of 30 to 35 knots this morning. Strong SCA
posted for most waters, but continued with gales for Nantucket
sound and our southern waters. Winds diminish this afternoon as
low level jet shifts east of the region, but seas will remain
quite high. Heavy rain into mid afternoon as well as fog will
also reduce visibility for mariners at times.

Tonight...High confidence. South to southwest winds of 5 to 15
knots shift to the northwest overnight behind a cold front. Some
gusts between 20 and 25 knots will develop in the cool advection
pattern toward daybreak. Will need headlines most open waters
all night though given lingering swell. Also, areas of fog this
evening will reduce visibility for mariners.
