High pressure building into New England will provide dry weather
through Wednesday. The next storm arrives Thursday night into
Friday with a period of heavy rain and gusty winds. The storm
gradually slides offshore Saturday with dry and warmer weather
returning on Sunday. An approaching cold front may bring a risk
of showers Sunday night into Monday but temperatures should
average near normal. Behind the frontal passage for Tuesday,
drier and cooler.

130 AM Update...
A ridge of high pressure overhead was resulting in light
winds and good radiational cooling conditions very early this
morning. Skies were mostly clear, but there were a couple
patches of clouds in the Berks and another across parts of the
Cape. Early morning temps will bottom out in the 30 to 35 degree
range in the typically coolest outlying locations, to the upper
30s to near 40 in the urban centers.

3 PM Update:
High pressure builds across New England and offshore to the
Maritimes resulting in E/SE flow. Model cross sections show
increase in mid and high level moisture during the day, so
expect sunshine to give way to increasing clouds. NBM temps look
reasonable with highs in 50s to around 60, except lower 50s
along the immediate coast.
Next system (detailed more in Long Term section) approaches from
Great lakes Wed night. Lower levels will take time to saturate
but model consensus brings showers into western New England (as
far as Worcester County and RI) later at night. Clouds and
arrival of showers will keep low temps in upper 30s to lower
40s.

Thursday ... thermal and moisture advection begin to increase in
response to low/mid level jet approaching the region from the south
and west. However jet core and PWAT plume remain well to the west,
thus heaviest rain and strongest wind hold off until Thu ngt/Fri.
Southeast winds 10-15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph off the chilly
ocean waters will limit highs Thu in the 50s, cooler than normal.
Thu night/Friday ... full latitude trough moves across the area with
impressive wind (+4 to +5) and PWAT (+2 to +3) anomalies impacting
the area. Models continue to trend stronger with low level jet as
deterministic models offering 70-75 kt as 925 mb jet traverses the
south coast. Therefore could see some strong to possibly damaging
wind gusts impact the area during this time period. Although wind
direction for this event is from the southeast which tends to mix
down less than SSW that we experienced a few weeks ago. Nonetheless
need to watch how this evolves with time.
Regarding qpf...Strong jet dynamics acting on copious GOM and
Atlantic moisture will result in a period of very heavy rain with
embedded thunder. Despite high amplitude of system it remains
somewhat progressive and this will hold down qpf. Deterministic and
ensembles suggest regionwide 0.50 to 1.0 inches but strong southerly
flow will enhance upslope component in CT and wester-central MA
where up to 2 inches of rain is possible. Given progressive nature
of system and dry weather today and Wed leading up to this event,
any flooding (poor drainage and river/stream flooding) should be
minor at worst. Strong low level thermal advection will advect dew
pts into the 50s, supporting mild conditions especially by nighttime
standards. If we warm sector could see highs in the 60s Fri with
steady morning rains transitioning to low top showers as dry slot
overspreads the area.
The Weekend ... closed mid level low still traversing the area Sat.
GFS displaying its fast bias in the medium range here with mid level
moving offshore Sat. Will base the forecast off the slower guid
here. Not a washout Sat but cold cyclonic flow aloft should generate
scattered diurnal showers. Near normal temps with highs 60-65, mid
to upper 50s along the coast. Sunday could be the pick of the week
if short wave ridging holds on, providing dry weather and highs 65-
70! Sounds warm but normal high by Sunday is 62-67. An indication of
how anomalously cool and wet this current pattern.
Early Next Week ... ensembles suggest risk of showers with FROPA
Monday with temps near normal. Drier/post frontal and cooler Tue.
