.SYNOPSIS...
Clouds increase this afternoon as low pressure over the lower Ohio
Valley tracks eastward. An area of rain will move in tonight and
Friday as the low pressure moves towards our area, tracking just off
the south coast during Friday. There is the potential for some
spotty wintry precipitation late tonight. A ridge of high
pressure briefly brings dry and pleasant weather Saturday.
Another low pressure system will bring more rain and
unseasonably chilly temperatures Sunday into Sunday night with
even the low risk for wet snow across parts of the interior. A
third weather system may bring rain on Wednesday.

Current forecast looks on track, as mid and high deck cloud
cover overspreads the area from SW to NE. Warm air advection
(light) precip and virga ahead of our main precip event, in a
band from NW to SE, extending from western NY into CT. Cloud
ceilings in northern CT were still close to 10kft at 1 pm and
dewpoint depression was still quite large, but as the afternoon
progresses and cloud ceilings continue to lower, we could see
some light rainfall in northern CT and possibly into interior
MA. Hi-res models also indicating this potential, so continuing
a slight chance pop.

Previous Discussion...

A weak high pressure ridge will bring dry conditions this
morning, though it will be chilly as gusty northwest winds will
linger through midday across east coastal areas. Expect temps to
top off in the mid-upper 40s across the higher terrain to the
lower 50s from the eastern coastal plain to the lower CT valley
as winds back to SW at 10-15 mph with a few gusts up to 20 mph
during the afternoon.

With the continued mid level fast steering flow in place across
the northern tier states, clouds will quickly increase during
the afternoon. May see some spotty showers push across late in
the day as a warm front approaches.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY/...
Tonight and Friday...

Moisture will continue to increase on the generally light S-SW
winds early tonight. Even in the fast steering flow, noting a
PWAT moisture plume working N across the region late tonight, up
to 2-3 SD above normal. Will see a quick shot of heavy rainfall
mainly S of the Mass Pike. Current forecast suggests upward to
0.5 to around 0.75 inches on rain overnight, highest along the S
coast.

As the low heads offshore during Friday, winds will back around
to N- NE and will become blustery. Gusts may reach up to 20-25
mph, highest along the immediate coast as well as Cape Cod and
the islands. Rain will linger across central and eastern areas
as the low lingers offshore.

Overnight lows will fall back to the lower-mid 30s across the
higher terrain, which may allow for some mixed precipitation at
times late tonight through around daybreak Friday, ranging to
around 40 along the coast. A chilly day is in store on Friday
with the onshore winds. Expect temps to only reach the 40s, well
below seasonal normals.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Big Picture...

Stormy pattern over the weekend and the first half of next
week. Shortwave moves across Southern New England Friday night,
sweeping coastal low pressure off to the east. A second
shortwave digs over the Plains and Great Lakes over the weekend.
This forms a closed low that moves east across New England
Sunday night and Monday, before moving offshore to the east
Tuesday. Another northern stream shortwave digs over the Plains,
also forming a closed low that moves east to New England
Wednesday.

Differences in model mass fields from the weekend through
midweek next. Most of these differences are with timing, with
the GFS fastest. Prefer the slower ECMWF and associated models.
The main long-range models are in agreement with the general
scenario...that shortwaves amplify into weather systems every
couple of days and move east across our region. Confidence is
moderate over the weekend, fading to low-moderate by Tuesday-
Wednesday.

Daily Concerns...

Friday night...

Shortwave moves across Southern New England during the night,
pushing south-coastal low pressure out to sea. Deep lift moves
offshore, and deep moisture values diminish. Expect rain to taper
off during this time, with clearing skies overnight. Pressure
gradient diminishes overnight, so expect wind to diminish as it
turns out of the north. Dew points in the upper 20s and 30s will
allow min temps mainly in the 30s.

Saturday...

Weak high pressure builds over the region providing fair and
dry weather. Easily the choice of the weekend. Light wind may
become onshore by afternoon in the light flow. Moisture fields
increase above 12 thousand feet during the afternoon, so expect
increasing high clouds during this time. The mixed layer reaches
above 900 mb and possibly to 850 mb. Temps at 850 mb warm to
1-3C. If this is tapped, max sfc temps should reach the upper
50s and lower 60s, cooler along the coast.

Saturday night-Sunday-Monday...

Clouds increase Saturday night, but jet support for lift
remains to the southwest through the night. The GFS cross-
sections show deep moisture arriving around 5 AM, while the
ECMWF holds this off until 2 PM. Surface low on the ECMWF moves
to the Mid-Atlantic coast by 2 PM and passes south of Nantucket
early Monday morning. The forecast will split the difference
between the models, with chance pops Sunday morning and likely
pops Sunday afternoon and night.

Low level temperatures are mostly shown as above freezing. But
note that the ECMWF brings 925 mb temps below freezing over the
interior Sunday night while the GFS keeps temps above freezing.
The GGEM echoes the colder ECMWF temperature profiles. This
would support a mix or change to snow in the interior. However,
surface temperatures are projected in the mid and upper
30s...which would work against an accumulation and may favor a
cold rain. Best chance for snow Sunday night would be in the
Central and Western Hills. The forecast will show small areas
of rain/snow mix in these areas. Later model runs may trend to
more snow, but not sufficient confidence to buy in at this time.

Surface low moves off to the east Monday, but the closed upper
low and cold pool will linger overhead. This may hold the
western edge of the precipitation shield over Eastern MA for
part of the day. More confident that there will be clouds and
scattered showers during the day. Mixing to 925 mb would tap 0C
to 4C temps aloft, and support max sfc temps in the 40s east and
low 50s west.

Tuesday and Wednesday...

Weak high pressure moves through the region Tuesday, bringing
fair skies and light wind. Surface low associated with the next
northern stream shortwave approaches Tuesday night and spreads
more precipitation for Wednesday. Once again the low level temps
aloft are marginal, especially over the interior, so potential
for snow or rain/snow mix will need to be monitored.

.AVIATION /18Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Forecaster Confidence Levels...

Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

This afternoon...High confidence. VFR. Mid level clouds
overspread the area SW to NE this afternoon, with bases
lowering to around 6-7kft by late in the day, possible as low
as 5kft. Clouds will fill in from southwest to northeast. W/SW
winds 10-15 kt with gusts up to around 20 kt. Spotty
-RA possible in western terminals.

Tonight...Moderate confidence. Expect CIGS at around 4-5Kft
through around midnight, then lowering to areas of MVFR-IFR
after 07Z mainly across central and S areas. Rain moves in,
locally heavy at times across southern areas after midnight.
Areas of fog developing.

Friday...Moderate confidence. MVFR-IFR CIGS/VSBYS with areas of
LIFR CIGS across SE Mass and S coastal RI terminals will linger
through most of the day. Areas of rain and fog through most of
the day may begin to taper off across N central/NW Mass after
around 19Z.

KBOS Terminal...High confidence.

KBDL Terminal...High confidence.

Today...W wind gusting up to 20-25 kt lingering over the eastern
outer coastal waters, with Small Craft Advisories remaining in
effect. Winds should diminish as they back to SW during the day.
Seas up to 5 to 7 ft early, then will subside below 5 ft from
W-E. Good visibility.

Tonight...SW winds backing to S, generally around 10-15 kt with
gusts up to 20 kt. Seas up to 2 to 3 ft, but will build up to 4
ft across the southern outer waters toward daybreak. Rain moves
in from S-N this evening with areas of fog developing. Good
visibility early, then lowering to 3 to 5 nm except as low as 2
nm across the southern waters after midnight. Locally heavy rain
possible, especially southeastern waters.

Friday...Winds becoming E-NE 10-15 kt early, then backing to N
during the afternoon. Gusts up to 20-25 kt. Seas 3 to 6 ft
building to 5 to 9 ft by late in the day. Areas of rain and fog
with visibility around 1 to 3 nm, may improve to around 5 nm by
late in the day.
